Redskins get past Waterville boys, 2-0
Staff Report
Luke Tirrell and Chris Gentile pushed the Cooperstown boys soccer team past host Waterville, 2-0, in a Section Three Class C Tournament quarterfinal Friday.
"Cooperstown did very little right in the first half," Redskins coach Frank Miosek said. "It was a nightmare in the first half. Everything we’ve practiced, we did not do. We were lucky to have a 0-0 tie at halftime."
Tirrell headed in a throughball to the far post from outside back Peter Coccoma, snapping a scoreless tie with 18 minutes, 21 seconds left. Gentile followed 1:20 later with a 16-yard liner off a long, diagonal pass from Jason Conklin for 2-0 lead.
"The goalie never moved," Miosek said of Jamie Wragten, who made 24 saves for seventh-seeded Waterville (9-9-1). "It was a bullet."
Zack Sittler stopped six shots for the second-seeded Redskins (16-3), who advanced to the sectional semifinals against West Canada Valley or Fabius-Pompey. Miosek said the semifinal will be played Tuesday or Wednesday at a time and site will be determined.
