the mud

BAINBRIDGE _ Bainbridge-Guilford girls soccer coach George Williams summed up his team’s 1-0 double-overtime loss to Southern Cayuga in seven words: "We dominated the game and we lost."
Somehow, amid the mud, cold and misty rain under the lights Saturday night, the third-seeded Bobcats lost a Section Four Class C quarterfinal they clearly controlled throughout.
Senior Jennifer Patten hit a post and a crossbar for B-G, which fell despite outshooting sixth-seeded Southern Cayuga, 15-3.
With 3 minutes, 47 seconds left in the first overtime, Ashley Wade took a 25-yard shot from the left wing. B-G goalie Anna Feltham saw it the whole way, calling out, "Keeper! Keeper!" to let her defenders know she had a beat on the soft shot.
But the bouncing ball turned into a roller just before it got to Feltham, then slid under her arms and through her legs before trickling over the goal line.
"I was just trying to get it on goal," Wade said of her second goal of the year.
Feltham’s misfortune capped a night of unpredictable bounces, mishits and complete misses on both sides in the sloppy conditions.
"It may have neutralized some of our speed," Williams said of the muddy field. "We like to get to the ball to the outside and go. We have players who have good moves and they were slowed down a bit."[an error occurred while processing this directive]
Despite the mess, the Chiefs’ defense excelled in clearing balls to the sides of the field. Throw-ins became the norm as the ball seemed to spend as much time out of bounds as in play.
"We tried real hard to make sure we protected our goal," said SC coach Robert Kalweit, a 1968 Oneonta High graduate. "We marked them up and tried to get it outside."
Interscholastic Athletic Conference member Southern Cayuga denied B-G (12-5-2) the opportunity to meet Midstate Athletic Conference rival Sidney (15-4) for the fourth time this season. Second-seeded Sidney, which won the MAC title but dropped two of three games against the Bobcats this fall, will play the Chiefs (4-8-4) at 2 p.m. Wednesday at a site to be announced.
"Coach always says that can happen _ you can outplay the other team and not have it go your way," said a teary-eyed Patten, who was in the middle of most of B-G’s numerous scoring chances.

B-G’s chances included:
SC goalie Colleen Lukas coming out midway through the second 10-minute overtime to make a sliding save, deflecting a shot by Marcie Day.
Patten hitting the crossbar on a 15-yard shot with 1:10 left in regulation.
After a scrum in the front of the net with 4:30 left in regulation, a B-G player shooting toward the left side of the goal. Wade, positioned just in front in the goal, kicked it away.
Samantha Spalholz narrowly missing a rebound shot wide right with 21 minutes left in the second half.
Day’s 18-yarder midway through the second half that Lukas tipped just over the crossbar.
Patten and Christina Butcher working a pass-combination in the middle of the field that resulted in a 15-yard shot from Butcher. Lukas saved it with 31 1/2 minutes left.
And Patten hitting the left post from 5 yards with 29 minutes left in the first half.
"We had many opportunities from the 6- to 12-yard range, and their goalie made a nice save on one," Williams said. "We kept shooting them high rather than low. If we had shot them low, I think we would have put a few in."
B-G doubled its victory total from a year ago, when it went 6-11-2.
"We had an awesome season," Patten said. "We played as a team."
