O-State men lose shootout in final
Scott DePersis scored for the Oneonta State men’s soccer team, but the Red Dragons fell in the ECAC Upstate Championship in a penalty kick shootout against Fredonia on Sunday.
DePersis’ goal came in the opening half when he headed a ball off a corner kick from Keith Manscuk, who finished the season with 30 goals and 16 assists.
In the shootout, Rob Esposito, Victor Ianni and Kevin Swain all scored for the Blue Devils (12-7-2).
Oneonta didn’t convert a shot in the shootout.
Tournament MVP Scott Bergen stopped the Red Dragons’ first shot from Mike Mahoney. Sean Hoffer then sent one over the crossbar and DePersis hit the inside of the crossbar and the ball bounced out.
Fredonia’s Ryan O’Donnell tied the score in the first half on an unassisted goal.
Oneonta (16-2-2) tied the single-season record for wins at the school with a 5-2 win over Oswego on Saturday. The Red Dragons also set a new record with 78 goals this season.
Manscuk had three goals and two assists in the victory over the Lakers. It was the fifth time this season he scored three goals in a game.
Mahoney and Ryan Grady also scored for Oneonta State.

Cross Country
NCAA Division III regional
Senior Kaitlin O’Sullivan finished ninth over a 6-kilometer course at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional championship at Lechworth State Park in Geneseo to become Oneonta State’s first woman to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
O’Sullivan, who earned all-region honors for the second straight season, finished in 22 minutes, 55 seconds and was an automatic qualifier for Saturday’s meet at Wilmington College (Ohio).
The Red Dragons finished 16th out of 30 teams with 494 points.
Senior Nick Scalfone finished 56th (27:09) to lead the men’s team to an 18th-place finish out of 34 teams. Junior Alex Grout was 72nd in 27:35.
Wrestling
King’s College Tournament
Delhi graduate Josh Wake won the 174-pound title, leading Oneonta State to a third-place finish at the King’s College Tournament on Saturday.
Wake, a freshman, defeated Zach Dietrick of Kings, 10-0, in the final. Wake also won by pin and a 9-0 decision.
O-State finished with 125 1/2 points, behind York College (162) and Wilkes College (147 1/2).
David Ballard and Dennis Norton each lost in finals for the Red Dragons. Ballard lost by pin to York’s Gerald Browne in 4 minutes, 31 seconds of the 165-pound final.
Norton dropped a 12-0 decision to King’s Jason Reilly in the 197-pound final.
Devan Whitman placed fourth for O-State at 149 pounds.
Swimming
O-State sweeps
Chris Johnson won the 200-yard backstroke and the 1,000 freestyle to lead Oneonta State to a 136-55 victory over Utica. Andy Chouinard also won two events for the Red Dragons, winning the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.
Greg Kayser (200 freestyle), Andrew Mowson (400 individual medley), Mike Martinez (1-meter diving) and Emery Dergosits (500 freestyle) also won events for the Red Dragons.
O-State also got a 400 medley relay victory from Mike Moran, Shaun Gillespi, Justin Clark and Chouinard.
Catherine O’Loughlin and Caitlin O’Donnell won two events each to lead the O-State women to a 133-93 victory.
O’Loughlin won the 1,000 freestyle and 400 individual medley. O’Donnell earned victories in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle.
Gillian Sutera (1-meter diving), Kara Parnett (200 butterfly) and Danielle Ulanowski (200 backstroke) also won events.
The 400 medley relay team of Michele Sano, Jill Hutchinson, Kara Parnett and O’Donnell won.
