Films honored at Hall of Fame festival

"Toots," the story of legendary New York City saloon keeper Toots Shor and his interaction with a number of baseball and American celebrities in the 1950s, earned Best Film honors at the conclusion of the inaugural National Baseball Hall of Fame Baseball Film Festival on Sunday.

Three other films among the 13 entrants in the three-day festival were recognized. "This Old Cub," the story of longtime Chicago Cubs third baseman Ron Santo, was presented with the Critics Award, chosen by nationally renowned movie Critic Jeffrey Lyons. "The Emerald Diamond," a story of the Irish National Baseball Team, won the Filmmakers’ Award, presented by filmmaker Mark Reese, son of Hall of Fame shortstop Pee Wee Reese. "Kokoyakyu: High School Baseball," the story of Japan’s national obsession with high school baseball, captured the Baseball Award, presented by the Hall of Fame to the film that best furthers the understanding and appreciation of the game.

Judges included Lyons, Reese and Hall of Fame staff members Lenny DiFranza and Bill Francis.

Unatego Boosters to hold alumni games

The Unatego Spartan Booster Club will hold its third annual alumni games Thanksgiving weekend.

Volleyball will lead off the weekend at 7 p.m. Nov. 24. There will also be an optional basketball practive at 6 p.m. Nov. 24. Two basketball games will take place Nov. 25, starting at 6 p.m. with the JV "fast breakers," for players 35-and-under. The varsity "old-timers" will be at 7:30 p.m. for players 35-and-over. Closing the weekend will be an indoor soccer tournament at noon Nov. 26th.

Admission is $1 or a donation of a non-perishable food item or beauty product that will be given to Unatego Helping Hands Holiday Project.

The Calcio Legends Soccer Club is accepting registrations for competitive travel soccer teams. Teams compete in winter and spring leagues.

The club will compete in traditional league games, indoor and outdoor tournaments and specialized training clinics.

Cobleskill to host high school tournament

The SUNY Cobleskill athletic department will play host to the 2006 Hall of Fame High School Boy’s Basketball Tournament from on Dec. 27 and Dec. 29.

Games will feature both varsity and junior varsity. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for elementary and high school students with school identification. Section Two and Section Four passes will also be honored.

The schedule is as follows:

Dec. 27

JV: Delhi vs. Fort Plain, 2:30 p.m.; Cobleskill-Richmondville vs. Canajoharie, 4:15 p.m.

Varsity: Delhi vs. Fort Plain, 6:15 p.m.; Cobleskill-Richmondville vs. Canajoharie, 8 p.m.

Dec. 29

JV: Consolation, 2:30 p.m.; Championship 4:15 p.m.

Varsity: Consolation 6:15 p.m.; Championship 8 p.m.

Blue Jays baseball to hold exhibition series

The Blue Jays Baseball Organization will hold an exhibition series for high school varsity and JVs near the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in late April and mid-May. They will also hold summer tournaments for teams ages 13-under, 14-under, 15-under, 16-under and 18-under on Memorial Day weekend; July 2-4; and early August.
