Three O-State field hockey players earn all-region

The National Field Hockey Coaches Association named Oneonta State senior Megan Flaherty to its first all-region team, the college announced Monday.

Junior Samantha Merritt and freshman Kathryn Kubaryk received second-team honors.

Flaherty, a second-team All-SUNY Athletic Conference pick this season, started at midfield and had four goals and an assist. Merritt earned second-team honors for the second straight year. An All-SUNYAC first-teamer, Merritt led the Red Dragons with eight assists and also contributed two goals.

Kubaryk, the co-Rookie of the Year in the SUNYAC, had a team-high 13 goals and two assists.

Athletes of the week

Oneonta State named men’s soccer player Keith Manscuk and women’s cross country runner Kaitlin O’Sullivan its athletes of the week Monday.

Junior Manscuk helped O-State reach the Eastern College Athletic Conference Upstate New York championship game, which the Red Dragons lost in a penalty-kick shootout against Fredonia.

Manscuk had four goals and two assists in two weekend tournament games. He finished 2006 with single-season school records of 30 goals and 16 assists and 76 points. O-State finished 16-2-2 in its first season at the Division III level as it reclassifies from Division I.

Senior O’Sullivan became the second O-State woman to qualify for the NCAA Division III championship when she finished ninth at the Atlantic Regional meet in 22 minutes, 55 seconds over a 6-kilometer course.[an error occurred while processing this directive]
