Hartwick football closes with victory

Staff Report

Lindy Crea rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries Saturday, leading the Hartwick College football team to a 35-17 Empire 8 Conference thumping of visiting Utica College in the Hawks’ season finale.

Quarterback Jason Boltus also had two touchdowns, passing for one and rushing for another, to help the Hawks end their season at 4-6 overall and 2-4 in the E8. Boltus passed for 152 yards and ran for 77.

Unatego graduate Tyler DeMulder contributed 48 rushing yards and a touchdown on seven carries. He gave Hartwick a 35-10 lead with 4 minutes, 43 seconds left, capping a nine-play, 57-yard scoring drive with a 9-yard run. All of DeMulder’s yards came during Hartwick’s final scoring drive.

Hartwick, which finished with 401 yards of total offense, also received a college-best 14 tackles from Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week Jeff Dittman, a senior inside linebacker. Dittman earned two sacks in the victory, helping him top his previous single-game high of 11 tackles.

Cross Country

Swan seventh at regional

Senior Autumn Swan placed seventh out of 208 runners at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional Championships at Letchwood State Park in Geneseo.

Swan covered the 6-kilometer course in 22 minutes, 25.7 seconds and qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships at Voice of America Park in West Chester, Ohio, at noon this Saturday.

Hartwick’s men finished 25th out of 34 teams. Geoffrey McDonald paced the Hawks with a 126th-place finish out of 230 runners. He finished the 8-kilometer course in 28:48.9.

Swimming

Hawks split

Kevin Milkovich and Mike Breden won two events apiece to lead the Hartwick men’s swimming team to a 155-75 home victory over Le Moyne on Saturday. Hartwick’s women fell, 156-87.

Milkovich won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:30.23) and the 500 free (5:05.38). Breden swept the diving events.

Kurt Cedo won the 200 butterfly (2:05.91), and Craig Leaness placed first in the 200 free (1:52.14). The Hawks 400-relay team of Steve Van Duzer, Paul Layton, Leaness and Brett Mann won in 3:25.99.

Erin Mosher won the 200 backstroke (2:17.3) to pace Hartwick’s women.

Equestrian

Cornell Invitational

Senior Laura Clough led Hartwick to a tie for fourth place Sunday at the Cornell Invitational. Clough won the open fences and novice flat competitions, then finished second in a three-way ride-off for High Point Rider.

Sophomore Raimie Utterback contributed a first-place finish in the novice fences and qualified for regionals in the class.

Hartwick native Caitlin Niedzialkowski also qualified for regionals with a fifth-place finish in the intermediate flat. She also finished second in the open fences.

Aileen McCarthy (intermediate fences), Beth Brandt (open flat), Megan McCue (intermediate flat) and Lauren Kamerer (novice flat) also finished second for Hartwick.

Skidmore won the team competition with 44 points, five better than host Cornell. Morrisville State finished third (36 points), followed by Hartwick and Colgate (33 apiece).

Hartwick competes this Saturday in the Skidmore Invitational.
