Wagenaar expected to start for Canada

Former Hartwick goalkeeper Josh Wagenaar earned a spot on Canada’s 17-player roster for today’s international friendly men’s soccer game with Hungary and is expected to start in goal, the college announced Tuesday.

The appearance will mark Wagenaar’s first international cap with the senior squad after earning 18 in the youth system. Canada called up Wagenaar for a friendly against Spain on Sept. 3, 2005, but he did not play. Wagenaar has participated in several senior training camps since.

Wagenaar left Hartwick after his junior season to pursue a professional career overseas. He was signed by ADO Den Haag in Holland last March and is playing in the Dutch Eredivisie, which is the top division among Holland’s professional leagues.

Wagenaar has made two appearances for ADO, as a substitute in a 2-0 loss to PSV Eindhoven on Sept. 23 and as the starter in a 2-2 draw against AZ Alkmaar on Oct. 1. The latter gave ADO its first point of the season.

Wagenaar received National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Region honors in 2004 and ’05. He also earned a first-team Atlantic Soccer Conference selection last season, when Wagenaar finished with a 0.74 goals-against average. Wagenaar went 34-7-5 in 47 appearances for the Hawks, who reached the NCAA Division I Tournament last fall.

Greatwich earns caps

Hartwick senior Chris Greatwich has two goals and an assist for his native Philippine red and blue as the Filipinos push to qualify for the 2007 ASEAN Championship.

The pre-qualifying tournament is held for the lower-ranked teams in the ASEAN Football Federation, which is largely made up of nations in Southeast Asia. The host Philippines, Laos, Cambodia, East Timor and Brunei are competing in the round-robin tournament. The group’s top two teams advance to the final tournament in January 2007 against Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, Vietnam and Indonesia.

The Filipinos are 1-1 after a 2-1 loss to Laos 2-1 and a 7-0 thumping of Timor. Greatwich scored in the 61st minute against Laos and had a goal and an assist against Timor. The Filipinos are tied for second with Brunei as each team has earned three points. The Philippines play Cambodia on Saturday and Brunei on Monday.

Greatwich started two seasons for the Hawks after transferring from Drury University (Mo.) and received first-team All-ASC accolades and second-team NSCAA/Adidas All-Region honors in 2005.[an error occurred while processing this directive]

Cross Country

Swan headed to NCAAs

Hartwick senior Autumn Swan will make her third NCAA Division III championships appearance this Saturday, when she’ll compete for a national cross country title in West Chester, Ohio.

Swan qualified for her second consecutive trip to the cross country nationals with a seventh-place finish during the NCAA Atlantic Regional last Saturday in Geneseo. She covered the 6,000-meter course in 22 minutes, 25.7 seconds, finishing 52 seconds behind overall winner Liz Montgomery of Geneseo.

Swan is one of seven individuals who will represent the Atlantic Region at the nationals, which will give All-American awards to the top 30 finishers from the United States. The championships feature the top 16 teams and the seven best individuals from the country’s eight regions.

Gustavus Adolphus’ Hailey Harren will attempt to successfully defend her individual title at noon Saturday. Swan finished 72nd out of 174 during last season’s championships, which featured 28 seniors among the first 71 runners to complete the race.

Swan also represented Hartwick in the 10,000-meter run at the 2006 NCAA D-III Track and Field Championships.
