Taggart leads Delhi to first victory, 53-47

Women’s Basketball

SUNY Delhi 53, Jefferson 47

Franklin graduate Kelly Taggart scored a collegiate-high 21 points and also grabbed 13 rebounds to lead host SUNY Delhi to its first victory of the season.

Lisa Ruff (Delhi) contributed 11 points for the Broncos and Gencia Archer had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Broncos (1-6), who held Jefferson scoreless over the final 2:33, sealed the game by going 4-for-4 in free throws over the final 15 seconds. Taggart and Amanda Moffett (Walton) each hit two.

Delhi visits Broome CC at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Cayuga 54, Cobleskill 53

Kim Stahl scored a game-high 21 points, but SUNY Cobleskill fell in a non-conference game Sunday.

Erinn O’Rourke scored 11 points for the Fighting Tigers, who pulled within a point with about five minutes to play, but neither team scored thereafter.

Cobleskill plays host to Holyoke on Tuesday.

Cross Country

NJCAA half-marathon

Matt Conant finished seventh in a school-record 1 hour, 8 minutes, 35 seconds to lead SUNY Delhi at the NJCAA Half-Marathon Championship on Sunday.

The meet is made up of NJCAA Division I, II and III teams. Conant, who missed All-American status by one place, beat Walton graduate Scott Gleason’s record of 1:13:19.

John Kosgie (South Plains, Texas) won the 13.1-mile race in an NJCAA-record time of 1:08:50.

Delhi’s Ben Jackson finished 18th (1:15:46) and Stephen McCaffrey 41st (1:19:25).

The Broncos finished seventh out of 17 teams. South Plains (Texas) won with 23 points.

Gilbertsville-Mount Upton graduate Gabby Dello was Delhi’s only female runner. She finished 15th with a school-record time of 1:35:12, beating Leslie DuBrava’s time of 1:46:15, set last year.

"She had a great season," Delhi coach Bob Backus said of Dello. "We were thing 1:39 or maybe a little faster, but she ran great and had a phenomenal race."

NJCAA Half-Marathon Championship

Sunday at Witchita, Kan.

Men’s team scores: South Plains 23, Johnson County 24, Butler 28, Mesa 51, Iowa Central 51, El Paso 55, Delhi 60, Cloud County 86, Allen County 107, Spartanburg Methodist 117, Phoenix 120, Vincennes 132, North Iowa 135, Highland 145, Fashion Institute 161, Neosho 173.

Individual winner: John Kosgie (South Plains) 1:08:35 over 13.1 miles (NJCAA record).

Delhi finishers: 7, Matt Conant 1:12:58 (school record); 18, Ben Jackson 1:15:46; 41, Stephen McCaffrey 1:19:25.

Women’s team winner: Johnson County 16.

Individual winner: Happy Mary Bacia (South Plains) 1:26:41.

Delhi finishers: 15, Gabby Dello 1:35:12 (school record).

Swimming

Harvest Invitational

SUNY Delhi’s Brian Wolfe set three school records and two Mountain Valley Conference records at the Genesee CC Harvest Invitational on Saturday to help Delhi finish second with 227 points. Alfred State won with 280.

Wolfe won the 1,650-yard freestyle with a conference and school record time of 19:09.10. Also, since Genesee uses an electronic timing system, Wolfe’s 1,000 time (11:36.68) can be used as a conference and school record. Wolfe also finished second in the 200 freestyle with a school-record time of 2:00.35.

Leonardo Morales won the 1-meter diving for the Broncos with a score of 106.30.

Gabrielle Asay’s victory in the 100 freestyle (1:00.51) led Cobleskill to second place in the women’s meet with 158 points, 100 points behind winner Genesee.

Shari Weiss led Delhi with a victory in the 200 breaststroke (3:00). The Broncos finished second with 227.
