Hartwick men’s basketball win first of season

Cory Carson scored a game-high 19 points to lead Hartwick College’s men’s basketball team to a 63-40 victory over the University of New England in the consolation game of the Hamilton Tip-off Tournament on Saturday.

Carson went 9-for-12 from the field, including one three-pointer. All-tournament selection Jan Cocozziello had 14 points, as the Hawks improved to 1-1. The Nor’easters fell to 0-2.

The Hawks made 15 of 29 shots in the opening half in taking a 34-15 halftime lead. The Hawks’ defense held New England to 7-for-26 shooting in the first half.

Freshmen Mike Agostinoni and Kyle Phillips each had eight rebounds as Hartwick held a 47-40 rebounding advantage.

Hartwick plays at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Tuesday.

Cross Country

NCAA Div. III Championships

Senior Autumn Swan finished in a tie for 98th place at the NCAA Division III championships at Wilmington, Ohio.

Swan finished the 6-kilometer course in 24 minutes, 54 seconds. There were 279 runners in the race.

Hamilton Quadrangular

Kurt Cedo and Kevin Milkovich won two events apiece as Hartwick’s men went 2-1 at the Hamilton Quadrangular on Saturday.

Hartwick (4-2) defeated Hamilton College, 142-89; defeated Ithaca, 136-101, but lost to SUNY Geneseo, 122-109.

Cedo, a 2006 NCAA Division III qualifier, won the 200-yard butterfly (2 minutes, 2.46 seconds) and the 200 back (1:57.40). Milkovich placed first in the 500 free (5:00.07) and 1,000 free (10:19.36). Milkovich, a sophomore, also finished third in the 200 IM (2:06.39).

Junior Craig Leaness won the other swimming event for the Hawks by edging Geneseo’s Sig Culhane in the 200 free (1:49.07) by .01. He finished second in the 100 free (49.41).

Hartwick’s Obie Lawence won the one-meter diving event. The sophomore scored 152.55 points on six dives.

Hartwick’s women went 1-2, defeating Hamilton, 137-104, and losing to Ithaca and SUNY Geneseo. The Hawks fell to 2-4.

Freshman Erin Gray won the 1,000 free (10:59.87). She finished third in the 500 free (5:26.26).

Ashley Brinkman and Shaina Shorell finished 1-2 in the one- and three-meter diving events. Brinkman’s 219.60 score in the one-meter event was the fifth best in Hartwick history. Her previous best was 215.75 set last season. Shorell won the three-meter event with a score of 247.78. Brinkman’s score was 243.40 .

Erin Mosher finished second in the 200 back (2:17.69).

Equestrian

Morrisville Invitational

The Hawks finished third at the Morrisville State Invitational on Saturday. Hartwick finished with 37 points, three behind the host school and five behind winner Skidmore.

Jennifer Allers, who is graduating in December and was participating in her last college event, placed first in the beginner walk trot canter for Hartwick. Hawks freshman Hannah West won the novice fences.

Megan McCue placed second in the intermediate fences; Jen Nelson was second in the intermediate flat; Nicole Barren took second in the beginner walk trot canter and Jaclyn Hall finished runner-up in the walk trot.

Catherine Moore and Lauren Moak tied for third in the novice flat. Beth Brandt placed third in the open fences.
