OHS, Davenport boys advance

Staff Report

Oneonta High and Davenport won semifinals of the Anthony C. Drago Tournament on Tuesday and will meet in the boys basketball title game Friday at OHS.

The Yellowjackets defeated Seton Catholic Central, 50-49, in a game that doubled as a Southern Tier Athletic Conference game. The Wildcats, who advanced to Class D state semifinals last season, beat Unatego in the other semifinal. The score of Davenport’s game was not reported to The Daily Star.

It was the season-opener for all four teams.

For Oneonta, Andrew Tenace hit two free throws with about minutes left to cap the scoring.

OHS trailed, 26-9, early in the second quarter, but varsity newcomer Brendan Harder, who scored a team-high 15 points, helped the lead the comeback.

Harder, a 6-foot-6 center, scored 10 points in the first half as the Jackets narrowed their deficit to 31-23 by halftime.

"He kept us in it," OHS coach Jerry Mackey said of Harder. "He probably had eight to 10 blocks and altered many other shots. They had a couple travels in the lane and I think it was because they were peeking."

Dan O’Brien scored all 11 of his points in the second half to help the Jackets complete the comeback. Alex Mirabito had 10 points and Tenace finished with nine.

"It was a good atmosphere," said Mackey, whose team went 9-12 last season. "Drago Gym was close to full and there was a lot of excitement. It’s a nice win for us, especially since it’s a league game."[an error occurred while processing this directive]
