OHS’ victory a three-for-all
Staff Report
Oneonta High’s boys made six three-pointers in the first half in taking a 24-point halftime lead and defeated Davenport, 70-51, in the championship game of the Anthony C. Drago Tournament on Friday at OHS.
Five Yellowjackets scored at least nine points led by all-tournament selection Dan O’Brien, who had 14.
Tournament MVP Andrew Tenace had 12 points for the Jackets, D.J. Basile and Devlin Vanderhoof each had 11 and all-tournament pick Alex Mirabito nine.
"We have a lot of versatile guys who give us a lot of options," OHS coach Jerry Mackey said.
Basile hit two three-pointers, and Lance Ratchford, Zach Harlem, O’Brien and Tenace each had one as Oneonta took a 40-16 halftime lead.
"When a team makes six three-pointers, it’s tough to stay in a zone," said Mackey, whose team is 2-0 this season after starting last season 0-2 en route to a 9-12 record. "Coach (Davenport’s Lee) Fisher said we shot it great in the first half. We forced them out of their zone."
Mackey also said his team’s ability to break Davenport’s pressure was a big key.
Brendan Harder, who scored 15 points in OHS’ 50-49 victory over Seton Catholic Central in a tournament semifinal on Tuesday, also made the all-tournament team. Harder scored three points Friday.
Brandon Cuddy scored 17 points to lead Davenport. Travis Mole had 12 and Dan Toombs 11 for the Wildcats. Cuddy and Toombs were all-tournament selections for Davenport (1-1), which advanced to the Class D state semifinals last season.[an error occurred while processing this directive]
"We didn’t have much of an answer for Cuddy," Mackey said.
Seton Catholic Central defeated Unatego in the consolation game. The Spartans’ Joe Innes made the all-tournament team.
Oneonta plays host to Greene on Tuesday.
