Mudge’s 42 lifts H-T to OT win
Staff Report
Junior Greg Mudge hit two free throws with one second left in regulation and then scored 10 of his varsity-high 42 points in overtime as Hunter-Tannersville defeated Coxsackie-Athens, 70-68, Wednesday in a first-round game of the H-T Booster Club Tournament.
"He drove the length of the floor and got fouled," H-T coach Chris Glennon said of Mudge’s play at the end of regulation. "I was going to call timeout, but I didn’t want to stop the momentum."
Mudge’s previous varsity-high of 39 came last season.
"I’ve got to throw some props to my big guys," Glennon said. "James Figiel and Casey Tepp had a lot of offensive rebounds and that allowed us to reset and do our offense again."
Tepp had 11 rebounds and Figiel 10.
Glennon said Mudge is averaging around 31 points this season.
The Wildcats (5-3) played Loudonville Christian, the eighth-ranked Class D team in the state, at 7:30 tonight.
Coxsackie, which received 15 points from Max Lumarchi, plays Taconic Hills at 6 p.m. in the consolation.

Morris 59, Mohawk 56
In a game Morris coach John Swertfager said he wanted to pull a Bobby Knight and kick a chair, and asked his players if anyone knew CPR when it was over, Mark Jacobsen and Matt Joyce went 3-for-4 at the line in the final 30 seconds to give the host school a victory in the first round of the Ray Clement Tournament.
Joyce, who had a game-high 20 points, hit two free

throws with about 12 seconds left to make it 59-56 and the Mustangs forced a missed three-pointer by John LeClair in the closing seconds.
"We had a couple turnovers that just make a coach go berserk," said Swertfager, whose 3-4 team blew a couple of late leads earlier this season. "I said to one of my players, Man, do I really want to kick that chair.’"
Jacobsen finished with 15 points and Ed Polimeni had eight for Morris, which plays perennial Section Three power Hamilton in the final at 5:30 tonight.
Hamilton defeated Franklin, 59-36, in the other semifinal.
"They’re not as strong as the Adonal Foyle-led teams, but the Schindler brothers (Mark and Jeff) are both about 6-5, so we’ll have run them up and down the court and get them tired," Swertfager said in reference to Golden State Warriors center Foyle, who led Hamilton to a Class D state championships in 1994. "It it gets to be a rebounding contest, we have no chance."
Mohawk, which plays Franklin in the consolation game at 4 p.m., was led by LeClair, who scored 18 of his 19 points in the first half.

Gabe Fowler scored 14 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to lead Sherburne-Earlville to victory in a semifinal of the Unadilla Valley Tournament.
The last of Fowler’s four three-pointers came early in overtime and Sidney never recovered.
The Warriors (7-2) received 17 points and 23 rebounds from Darrin Martindale. They held a five-point lead when Andy Foote (11 points) fouled out with 4:57 left.
"If Foote doesn’t foul out, we win for sure and we probably should have won anyway," Sidney coach Mike Brazee said.
S-E tied the score at 49 with 13 seconds left in regulation on two free throws by Wilson Rose, who had a game-high 21 points. Sidney had a chance to win in regulation off an inbounds play under its basket, but Martindale missed a foul line jumper as time expired.
"I think we surprised them," said Brazee, who added his team was thoroughly outplayed by the Marauders in a preseason scrimmage. "I think they thought we scrimmaged them and knocked them around, but we had some opportunities."
The Warriors play Midstate Athletic Conference rival UV in the consolation game at 4:30 today.
S-E, a former Susquenango Association rival of Sidney’s, plays Norwich in the title game at 8 p.m.

Joe Innes scored 14 points, but Unatego lost at the Surf and Slam Tournament in San Diego.
Trevor Day, out of New York City, outscored the Spartans, 9-6, during the overtime period. The Spartans missed a three-pointer late in overtime.
Unatego’s shooting wasn’t on all game, coach Jim Knight said. The Spartans finished 23-for-69.
"We shot the ball horrid," said Knight, whose team flew into California on Tuesday. "I attribute that to not being in the gym the last few days. We came out real slow. We were just a step slow all day. We turned it up in the fourth and went with a full-court press. We just didn’t shoot the ball well enough to win."
Owen Moss scored seven of his nine points in the fourth quarter to help Unatego rally from a 40-34 deficit.
Moss also contributed 10 rebounds and Kyle Falkenmeyer 12 points for the Sparans (3-4), who play Encinal of Alameda, Calif., at noon Friday.

Downsville pulled within two points in the fourth quarter before Winans took over.
"He’s about 6-0, but he’s quick as lightning," Downsville coach Jeremy Shaw said of Winans. "Defensively, he’s so smart. He suckered my point guard into so many (turnovers). I don’t have an official number, but I’d bet he had over 10 steals. Him taking over coupled with our foul shooting was the difference."
The Eagles (3-5), who received 14 points from Michael Barnes, shot 10-for-23 from the free throw line.
