Unatego girls win Kazalski

MVP Colleen O’Hara finished with 18 points, four steals and three assists Friday to lead the unbeaten Unatego girls basketball team to a 47-34 rout of Oneonta in the championship of the Kazalski Tournament at Bainbridge-Guilford.

All-tournament selection Blake Shelton contributed six points and seven rebounds for the Spartans (9-0), a day after scoring a game-high 18 points in a 45-42 first-round victory over the tournament host. Unatego rallied from a one-point halftime deficit, outscoring the Yellowjackets, 27-13, in the second half.

All-tournament selections Meredith Ridgway (nine points) and Madie Harlem (six) paced Oneonta.

Unatego plays at Delhi at 6 p.m. next Friday.

Jennifer Patten scored a varsity-high 33 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Bainbridge-Guilford to a consolation win in the Kazalski Tournament.

"They played a lot of zone and Jen just hit some shots early and got to the free throw line," B-G coach Bob Conway said of Patten, who attempted all eight of her free throws in the first quarter and hit six of them.

Marcie Day contributed 22 points and 16 rebounds for the Bobcats (5-2). She went 16-for-20 from the foul line.

"She really attacked the boards off the dribble, and that caused trouble trying to guard her," Conway said of Day, who had seven offensive rebounds. "They were not quick enough to defend her."

The two teams will meet again at Marathon at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Stephanie Shellman finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, five assists and six steals to lead Downsville (7-2) to non-league win. Macy Davis hit three three-pointers en route to 11 points for the Eagles, who visit Margaretville on Thursday.

Melissa Oswald scored 14 points to pace Afton, which got eight points and eight rebounds from Joelyn Sines.
