Baseball umpire meeting set for Sunday

The Schohanna/Oneonta board of umpires will hold its first meeting at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Hodgdon Instructional Resource Center lecture hall No. 5 at Oneonta State.

Classes for anyone interested in umpire training will begin Feb. 7.

Site changed for NYSPHSAA softball clinic

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association has announced a site change for its eighth annual softball coaches clinic, scheduled for Feb. 2.

Because of a scheduling conflict with the Adirondack Sports Complex in Glens Falls, the NYSPHSAA has moved its clinic to Queensbury High School, west of Exit 19 on Aviation Road.

Registration for the one-day clinic begins at 7:30 a.m. Feb. 2, followed by workshops at 8:30 a.m. A casual Coaches Cracker Barrel session at the Queensbury Hotel precedes the clinic at 8 p.m. Feb. 1

Cost for the clinic is $85. Registration is available at the door.

The annual Chenango Lake Perch Derby will be held Feb. 3. The first person to catch a perch with a special 2007 tag will win $1,000. If no tagged perch is caught, the prize money will be raffled off to registered anglers only.

Also, $500 will be awarded for catching a second perch with a 2007 tag. In addition, if the first tagged perch is caught by someone who has pre-registered (by Jan. 27), he or she will receive an extra $200.

Other prizes will be given for the largest perch caught every 15 minutes.

Registration is $5 the day of the event. Registration by Jan. 27 is $4. Forms are available at http://www.oxfordlions.org.

If the Derby is be postponed, it will be held Feb. 17.

Smullens road race to be held Feb. 10

The 35th running of the Bob Smullens Road Race is slated for 12:30 p.m. Feb. 10 in Cooperstown.

This mid-winter event features youth and adult divisions for 10-kilometer and 5K races that begin in downtown Cooperstown and run along the east side of Otsego Lake. Raceday registration starts at 11:30 a.m. and costs $15.

Pre-registration costs $12. Forms are available on the Cooperstown Winter Carnival website, http://www.cooperstowncarnival.org, and at The Clark Sports Center and Church and Scott Pharmacy.

Futsal league to start Feb. 18

Hartwick College will host an Adult Futsal League at Binder Gymnasium on weekends beginning Feb. 18. The league is seeking a minimum of six teams, each with maximum rosters of 10 players ages 18 or older per team.

Cost is $100 per team

Boys basketball state tournament set

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association has announced its schedule for the 2007 boys basketball state tournaments at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Tickets for the event, which runs March 16-18, cost $10 per session or $45 for all sessions and can be purchased at the Civic Center Box Office or by phone at 518-798-0202. Tickets also can be purchased through Ticketmaster, at all locations, by visiting the website http://www.ticketmaster.com, or by calling 518-476-1000 or 802-862-5300.

The schedule is as follows:

March 16 semifinals: Class D, 10 and 11:45 a.m.; Class C, 1:30 and 5 p.m.; Class B, 6:45 and 8:30 p.m.

March 17 semifinals: Class A, 9 and 10:45 a.m.; Class AA, 12:30 and 2:15 p.m.

March 17 championships: Class D, 5:30 p.m.; Class C, 7:15 p.m.; Class B, 9 p.m.

March 18 championships: Class A, 1 p.m.; Class AA, 2:45 p.m.

Youth soccer registration underway

The Oneonta Youth Soccer Association has started registration for its Spring Recreation Soccer League. Forms have been distributed through the City of Oneonta Elementary Schools and are also available at Sport Tech.

This League is for youths in grades kindergarten through second who attend an Oneonta City School or live within the Oneonta City School District.
