Sidney wrestlers edge Bulldogs

Staff Report

Sidney wrestling knows drama.

Jordan Clapperton completed the Warriors’ comeback from a 25-point deficit Thursday night with a pin in the final match, giving Sidney a 29-28 Midstate Athletic Conference win over host Delhi.

Clapperton rallied from a 9-2 deficit against James Card, scoring nine points in the second period of the 189-pound bout before turning a modified half-nelson into a pin at the 3-minute, 29-second mark.

Delhi jumped to a 6-0 lead when Devon Bedient (21-3) pinned Pat Wright in 55 seconds at 215 pounds. Sidney’s Tyler Koza followed with a 10-5 decision over Dakota Vandermark at 112 pounds, but Delhi won the next four matches. Kyle Bishop (119, major decision), Sean Neumann (125, forfeit), J.J. Darling (130, forfeit) and Micci Mason (135, pin) gave the Bulldogs a commanding 28-3 lead through six matches.

Sidney rallied by winning the last five matches. John Mercurrio (140, forfeit), Joe Chase (145, decision), Ron Alston (152 pin) and Chase Mott (171, technical fall) set up Clapperton for the decisive pin.

"They came storming back," said Delhi coach John Wake, whose team fell to 2-7.

Alston keyed the comeback when he rallied from a 4-0 deficit against Brent Hilgers. Alston tied it with a reversal and two near-fall points before pinning Hilgers with one second left in the second period.

Mason improved to 19-3 with his second-period pin of Byron Ruland.

Delhi hosts a regular-season ending dual meet against Schoharie-Middleburgh at 6 p.m. Tuesday.[an error occurred while processing this directive]
