OHS cheerleaders win competition
Oneonta High’s varsity and JV cheerleaders won a competition Sunday at Hartwick College.
The Yellowjackets’ teams each defeated two other teams in their classifications.
Jess McCue, Monica Jones, Ashley Georgia, Cassandra Fleming, Jessica Ignone, Rebecca Payne, Rachel Buckley, Amanda Conrade, Sarah Garcia, Paige Brady and Cathy Cobstill competed for Oneonta’s varsity team.
Sara Baker, Anna Boerner, Emily Brackett, Rebecca Hill, Beth Ann Hughes, Kayann Johnson, Katie Lord, Christine Ramsell, Ashley Seeley and Kayla Seeley are on the JV team.
Local men win basketball title
The New York Owls won the 75-and-older championship at the third annual Jacksonville Men’s Masters Basketball 3-on-3 Tournament, which ran Jan. 19-21.
Oneonta resident Garth Stam and Gary Holway, from Mount Vision, joined Islip resident Gerry Smith and Ithacan Paul Eberts on the winning team.
The Owls will compete in the New York State Senior Games in Cortland on June 9 and the National Senior Games, which run June 27-30 in Louisiville, Ky.
Oneonta YMCA cancels tourney[an error occurred while processing this directive][an error occurred while processing this directive]The Oneonta YMCA announced Monday it will not host the Little Big Man Basketball Tournament this year because expanded programming has resulted in space and time constraints.
In a media release, the YMCA said it can no longer accommodate the teams adequately and that it is working to create a family-oriented fundraiser that is more specific to the community and will ensure the availability of scholarships to those in need.
Baseball Hall internships available
The Steele Program is offering internships at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in more than 20 departments, including collections, membership, education, and research and communications. Interns will do projects such as writing assignments and public presentations.
This 10-week program runs from June 4-Aug. 10. All interns will receive a stipend for the duration.
Interns and staff also will travel to Citizens Bank Park to receive a tour and watch a Phillies game.

Site changed for softball clinic
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association has announced a site change for its eighth annual softball coaches clinic, scheduled for Friday.
Because of a scheduling conflict with the Adirondack Sports Complex in Glens Falls, the NYSPHSAA has moved its clinic to Queensbury High School, located west of Exit 19 on Aviation Road.
Registration for the one-day clinic begins at 7:30 a.m. Friday, followed by workshops at 8:30 a.m. A casual Coaches Cracker Barrel session at the Queensbury Hotel precedes the clinic at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Snowshoe race scheduled for Feb. 10
Glimmerglass State Park will host a 5-kilometer snowshoe race at 2 p.m. Feb. 10.
The event serves as a qualifier for the Winter Empire State Games, scheduled for late February in Lake Placid. Participants should register before the race, which begins at the warming shed next to the beaver pond.

Perch Derby moved to Feb. 17
A lack of ice has resulted in the postponement of the Chenango Lake Perch Derby, which will move from Saturday to Feb. 17.
The ice on Chenango Lake is 6 inches thick, forcing the annual fundraiser for the Oxford Lions Club to move back.
The derby runs from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 17. The first person to catch a perch with a special 2007 tag will win $1,000. If no tagged perch is caught, the prize money will be raffled off to registered anglers only.
Also, $500 will be awarded for catching a second perch with a 2007 tag. In addition, if the first tagged perch is caught by someone who pre-registered (by Feb. 10), he or she will receive an extra $200.
Other prizes will be given for the largest perch caught every 15 minutes.
Registration is $5 the day of the event and $4 in advance. Forms are available at http://www.oxfordlions.org, Mayhood’s Sporting Goods in Norwich and Hoppies in Oxford.
If the derby is canceled or no tagged perch is caught, the prizes will be raffled off to those who pre-registered at noon Feb. 17.
Smullens road race set for Feb. 10
The 35th running of the Bob Smullens Road Race is slated for 12:30 p.m. Feb. 10 in Cooperstown.
This mid-winter event features youth and adult divisions for 10-kilometer and 5K races that begin in downtown Cooperstown and run along the east side of Otsego Lake. Raceday registration starts at 11:30 a.m. and costs $15.
Pre-registration costs $12. Forms are available on the Cooperstown Winter Carnival website, http://www.cooperstowncarnival.org, and at The Clark Sports Center and Church and Scott Pharmacy.

Futsal league to start Feb. 18
Hartwick College will host an Adult Futsal League at Binder Gymnasium on weekends beginning Feb. 18. The league is seeking a minimum of six teams, each with maximum rosters of 10 players ages 18 or older per team. Cost is $100 per team.

SUNYAC basketball tourneys move
The SUNY Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball championships will be held Feb. 20, Feb. 23 and Feb. 24 at the higher seeds’ campuses, not at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.
The championship site will be determined after the Feb. 20 quarterfinals.
