Davenport girls get Upper hand

Davenport’s girls will play the waiting game until Feb. 16.

Nicole Frank scored a game-high 13 points Tuesday, helping the Wildcats clinch their fifth straight division title with a 52-34 Delaware League rout of visiting Stamford.

Upper Division champion Davenport (14-3 overall, 10-2 DL) will play the Mountain Division winner Feb. 16 at SUNY Delhi in the DL crossover championship. The Wildcats won back-to-back DL titles in 2003 and 2004 before falling, 48-41, to Class D state finalist Downsville in 2005. Last season, Davenport fell, 58-31, in the crossover to eventual Class D state champion South Kortright.

Downsville (14-2, 11-1) and SK (12-4, 11-1) won DL games Tuesday to remain tied for the top spot in the Mountain Division.

Samantha Meyerhoff contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds for Davenport, which jumped to a 17-4 lead in the first quarter. Amanda Toombs grabbed 12 rebounds and Stephanie Adam had 10 for the Wildcats, who host Margaretville on Thursday before closing their league schedule at Hunter-Tannersville on Feb. 9. H-T, which was idle Tuesday, is second in the Upper Division with five league losses.
