OXFORD _ How’s this for an unlikely scenario?
Unadilla Valley became in the first team in school history to win back-to-back league titles Saturday, defeating host Oxford, 55-46, without its best player and after finishing second in its division.
The Storm’s unique journey to their second straight Midstate Athletic Conference boys basketball title came without senior guard Juston Parks, who rolled his left ankle an hour into Friday’s practice and watched the game from the bench Saturday.
But junior Raffi Perry and senior Matt Potter more than made up for Parks’ absence.
Perry hit two of his three three-pointers in the fourth quarter, the latter giving the Storm a 50-43 lead with 1 minute, 13 seconds left to cap a 19-point performance. Potter finished with a game-high 20 points to go along with a handful of blocked shots.
Both of Perry’s fourth-quarter threes came after point guard Mason Wyman penetrated the lane and passed back to Perry for open looks from the top of the key.
"They were huge," Perry said of the three-pointers. "They just happened. You find your shot and you just hit it."
The victory marked UV’s second win over Oxford this season as it beat the Blackhawks, 43-39, on Dec. 2. In that game, however, the Storm had the services of No. 2 scorer Parks.[an error occurred while processing this directive]
