Area has four good shots to win it all

By Rob Centorani

Staff Writer

Four area boys basketball teams appear to be the leaders of the pack for the Section Four tournaments, which begin tonight.

The quartet of Oneonta in Class B, Sidney in Class C, and Davenport and Worcester in Class D have legitimate shots to win sectional titles. Yet none is a legitimate favorite.

Let’s start in Class D, where Delaware League champion Davenport (19-1) and Tri-Valley League winner Worcester (15-2) are seeded second and third, respectively, behind Interscholastic Athletic Conference member Odessa-Montour (13-5).

Defending Class D sectional champion Davenport and Worcester won their league championship games by a combined 66 points this past weekend with athletic squads that scored repeatedly in transition.

Those victories seem to have given each a boost of confidence heading into sectionals.

"To go all the way," forward Scott Lehenbauer said of Worcester’s goal after scoring 18 points Saturday in a 63-27 T-V crossover drubbing of Edmeston at Oneonta State. "Win sectionals. That’s the plan."

Davenport and Worcester will have to win two games apiece to set up a rematch of their Dec. 22 meeting, which the Wildcats won, 52-38.

The Wolverines open at home at 7 tonight against No. 14 Hunter-Tannersville (7-11), which is led by junior guard Greg Mudge. A 1,000-point scorer, Mudge hovers around 30 per game as the area’s points leader this season.[an error occurred while processing this directive]
