Area swimmers win regional titles

Captains Kevin Selby and Shari Weiss earned victories this past weekend to lead the SUNY Delhi swimming teams during the Region III North East District Championships at Monroe Community College in Rochester.
Selby helped Delhi’s men to a third-place finish (255 points) out of 10 teams with a 23.78-second victory in the 50-yard freestyle. He also placed second in the 100 butterfly (school record 1:00.27) and swam legs on three relay teams that finished in the top three.
Weiss paced the Broncos to a sixth-place finish (74 points) in the 10-team women’s championships with a win in the 200 individual medley (2:35.79). The first Delhi woman to win a regional title, Weiss also placed third in the 400 individual medley (5:39.33) _ one spot behind Cobleskill’s Gabrielle Asay (5:22.42).
In addition to helping two relay teams to top-three finishes, Asay also placed second in the 200 butterfly (2:30.61) and third in the 200 backstroke for the third-place Fighting Tigers, who scored 184 points.
Monroe swept the team titles, with 564 points in the women’s competition and 466 in the men’s.
Delhi’s men also received top-three finishes from Brian Wolfe (1,650 free; 200 free), Leonardo Morales (one- and three-meter diving), and Will Quinn (100 backstroke). Wolfe’s 1:55.50 in the 200 free was a Mountain Valley Conference record.
Matt Hatlee earned the 100 free title _ finishing in 50.58 seconds _ for Cobleskill, which placed sixth with 105 points.
