ONEONTA _ Andrew Tenace discovered the cure for butterflies Saturday night at Oneonta High.

Apparently, it’s scoring in bunches.

With his team down by two after three quarters, senior forward Tenace scored 16 of his game-high 22 points over the final eight minutes to lead top-seeded Oneonta to a 63-57 basketball victory over No. 8 Chenango Valley in a Section Four Class B quarterfinal.

"I got a little nervous," said Tenace, who made all four of his field goal attempts and went 7-for-8 from the foul line in the fourth quarter. "I was thinking if we lose this, we’re done for the year. That’s my high school career, so I stepped it up a bit. I was shooting it a lot more, went to the basket and made my shots."

Tenace scored 11 straight Oneonta points in the final quarter, extending a one-point lead to a 53-45 advantage with a little more than two minutes left.

The Yellowjackets (16-4), who’ll play fifth-seeded Watkins Glen (17-4) in a sectional semifinal Tuesday, outscored the game but undersized Warriors, 26-18, in the fourth quarter. Tenace and junior sidekick Dan O’Brien accounted for 24 of those points.

"They’re some of the best players in the (Southern Tier Athletic Conference) and you can’t hold them down forever," CV coach Bob Zanot said of Tenace and O’Brien.

It took O’Brien a minute to turn a 39-37 deficit to start the fourth quarter into a 42-39 lead.[an error occurred while processing this directive]
