Men’s Swimming

UNYSCSA/E8 Championships

Hartwick fell short of successfully defending its UNYSCSA and Empire 8 titles Saturday at Syracuse-Nottingham High.

Alfred won both titles with 1,245 points. The Hawks were second with 1,150 in the 14-team event.

Kevin Milkovich won an Empire 8 title for the Hawks as he placed second in the 1,650 freestyle (16 minutes, 13.61 seconds). He won the conference title as the first E-8 finisher. Kevin Kolbe was seventh (16:59.43).

Milkovich was also eighth in the 200 butterfly (2:02.78).

Kurt Cedo finished fourth in the 200 backstroke (1:55.31) and earned second-team Empire 8 honors as he was the second to finish among league swimmers. Tomie Schoening finished seventh (1:58.65), Paul Layton ninth (1:59.98) and Brett Mann 10th (2:00.27).

Craig Leaness was fourth in the 100 freestyle (47.84) and Steve Van Duzer eighth (48.80). Gregg Ducey was fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.01) and Tony Riley ninth (2:17.44).

Hartwick’s team of Van Duzer, Mann, Cedo and Leaness were third in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:11.26, earning second-team all-Empire 8 honors.

Hartwick 13, Harvard 3

Megan Dahl-Smith scored four goals and Kaitlin Leonard contributed three as No. 13 Hartwick rallied for a 13-7 victory over No. 20 Brown on Saturday at Harvard’s Blodgett Swimming Pool.

The Hawks opened with a 13-3 victory over Harvard.

The Hawks (12-7) trailed Brown, 7-4, with about two minutes remaining in the third period. Hartwick then scored nine straight goals to take control. Kirsten Hudson scored two straight to make it 7-6 and Ellen Sevigny tied the scored with 6:06 remaining in the fourth.

Dahl-Smith gave the Hawks the lead at 5:15.

Olivia Colebourne made 13 saves for Hartwick. Hudson and Christina Evans each finished with two goals and Keri James had four assists.

Hudson had four goals and Dahl-Smith three in the opener to help Hartwick to the win over Harvard, giving coach Alan Huckins his 100th career victory.

Sevigny contributed two assists for the Hawks, who are off until March 25 when they face Wagner, Connecticut College and Marist in Poughkeepsie.

Equestrian

Hartwick fourth at Skidmore

Laura Clough and Victoria Broderick each won events to help Hartwick to fourth place at the Skidmore Show on Saturday.

Clough, a senior, won the intermediate flat event. Sophomore Broderick earned a victory in the advanced trot canter.

The Hawks also had three seconds in Aileen McCarthy (intermediate fences), Hannah Wiest (novice flat) and Catherine Moore (novice flat).

Skidmore won the team title with 47 points, beating Cornell (43), Colgate (32) and Hartwick (29) in the 13-team event.

Women’s Basketball

Cobleskill 55, Dean 54

Kim McMillen had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead visiting Cobleskill to a non-league victory on the road Saturday.

Meghan Smida contributed 11 points and Kim Stahl 10 for the Fighting Tigers (22-6), who await the Region III Tournament this week.

Gencia Archer had 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead host SUNY Delhi to a Mountain Valley Conference victory Friday.

Franklin graduate Kelly Taggart scored 17 points for the Broncos (5-20), who got a college-high 19 rebounds from Nishanda Pegues.

Jon Myers scored a game-high 20 points and contributed eight assists as host SUNY Delhi won a Mountain Valley Conference game Friday.

Tyshawn Bierria and Abar Miller contributed 14 points apiece for the Broncos (14-12), who await for the Region III Tournament.

Cobleskill seeded fourth

SUNY Cobleskill’s men’s basketball team earned the fourth seed in the NJCAA Region III Tournament.

The Fighting Tigers (21-7) received a bye through sub-regionals and will play a quarterfinal game against the winner of No. 9 Corning CC and No. 8 SUNY Delhi on Friday at Herkimer CCC.

The Broncos (14-12) will host their sub-regional game Tuesday against Corning (17-11).

Other sub-regional games Tuesday include: No. 12 Mohawk Valley CC (16-11) at No. 5 Finger Lakes CC (20-9); No. 11 Clinton CC (18-12) at No. 6 Hudson Valley CC (21-9); No. 10 North Country CC (17-10) at Broome CC (18-10).

Fulton-Montgomery CC (21-4) is top-seeded, followed by host Herkimer (22-7) and Onondaga CC (23-7).

The quarterfinals are Friday, semifinals on Saturday and the final Sunday, all at Herkimer.

Indoor Track

NYU Fastbreak Invite

Oneonta State’s Fred Romer, Nick Pampena, Matt Durkin and Alex Grout teamed up to win the men’s 3,200-meter relay in a school-record time of 8 minutes, 1.44 seconds Friday at the NYU Fastbreak Invite.

Grout was also ninth in the mile, setting a school record with a time of 4:14.08. Rich Kardas also set a school record when he placed 24th in the 60 hurdles (9.01).

Jeremy Cline was fourth in the triple jump (13.49 meters) and Oneonta High graduate Adam Remillard was ninth in the long jump (6.72).

Kaitlin O’Sullivan finished second in the 800 with a school-record time of 2:13.37 to lead the O-State women’s team. Oneonta State’s 1,600 relay team of Maureen Verdier, Melissa Kanterman, Kristen Stein and O’Sullivan finished fifth in 4:06.40. Kristen Stein was ninth in the 500 (1:21.66).
