O-State baseball stays hot in Florida
Staff Report
Oneonta State’s hit parade continued Monday, when the Red Dragons baseball team pounded Mount St. Mary’s for 21 hits in a 19-2 spring trip victory in Cocoa Beach, Fla.
Brandon Galutz went 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI to lead the Red Dragons, who have had at least 17 hits in each of their first four games _ all victories.
"The team we played today was very good and their pitcher was throwing hard," O-State coach Rick Ferchen said via telephone on a cloudless, 85-degree day in Florida. "Right now, our kids are swinging a very nice bat. You take advantage of hitting when it’s hot."
The Red Dragons have outscored their first four opponents, 71-9, amassing 81 hits along the way.
"Right now, good pitching, poor pitching ... it doesn’t matter," said Ferchen, who added that no O-State team has started a season this strong in his 12 years as head coach. "Our pitching’s been solid, too. We’re not giving up a lot of runs. Right now, we’re just playing well."
Dan Randall (two doubles) and Dave Pauquette contributed four RBIs apiece, helping starting pitcher Steve Juedes to a victory in his first appearance this season. Juedes struck out two, walked four and allowed four hits and two earned runs in five innings.
Oneonta plays Massachusetts-based Gordon College at 9 a.m. today.
