Utica-Rome postpones opening event
Poor weather conditions forced the postponement of Utica-Rome Speedway’s Romano’s Driving School, which was originally scheduled for Friday. The event has been moved to April 20.

Additionally, Sunday’s open house and practice session has been rescheduled for Wednesday. Gates open at 5 p.m., followed by practice from 6-9 p.m. Pit admission is $10. Grandstands will be open to the public at no charge.
U-R will start competition April 22 with its 46th season opener. The event will feature the 358-modifieds in a 46-lap, $2,500-to-win contest. Sportsman, pro stocks, pure stocks and IMCA modifieds are also scheduled to run April 22, which marks the start of the points races in all divisions.
Gates open at 1 p.m. April 22, with racing scheduled to start at 4 p.m.

Oneonta City softball starts soon
The Oneonta City summer softball leagues are accepting sign-ups and will hold open/manager meetings for men and women ages 18 and older later this month at the Laskaris Skateroom in the Brenner Recreation Center.
Each team should have at least one representative attend. The women’s meeting is scheduled for 8 p.m. Monday, followed by the men at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Registration deadline is 5 p.m. April 27.[an error occurred while processing this directive]
Entry fee is $400 per team, with a minimum deposit of $200 required to secure a spot. Entry forms are available at the Recreation Office in the Brenner Recreation Center.
Women play Mondays and Wednesdays during the summer and men compete Tuesdays and Thursdays. Games will be played at Neahwa and Catella parks beginning May 29.

Softball clinic set for Tuesday
The Oneonta Boys and Girls Club will hold a girls softball clinic and registration for its upcoming softball league from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday. Girls ages 7-12 of all skill levels are eligible to participate in the clinic and the league.
Oneonta High softball coach Randy Brockway and his Yellowjackets will conduct the clinic. Participants should bring their own gloves.
The league will start later this month. To volunteer as a coach or an umpire, call the OBGC at 607-432-1133.
Golf meeting set for Thursday
Woodhaven Park Golf Course will host a meeting for its Thursday Morning League at 9 a.m. this Thursday. Teams and singles are welcome to join.

USPP Spring Race slated for April 21
The Upper Susquehanna Pedalers and Paddlers Spring Race is scheduled for April 21 in Oneonta, rain or shine. Entrants must be present and registered before the pre-race meeting at 11 a.m.
All NYMCRA point classes, pro, recreation and recreation mixed are eligible to compete in the 12- and 18-mile events, which start at the Route 205 Bridge in Oneonta and finish at the Otego fishing access. Recreation, C-1W and youth class races end at the Otego fishing access. All other classes continue to Wells Bridge, turn at a buoy and return to the Otego fishing access.
USCA and NYMCRA rules apply. Coast Guard-approved life jackets (PFDS) must be in each boat and worn as designed at the discretion of the judges. Non-swimmers and youths must wear life jackets.
Registration forms are available at the website http://www.uspp.pbwiki.com. Entrants also can register at 10 a.m. the day of the races.
Pre-registration cost is $12 per amateur paddler and $15 per pro paddler. All pre-registrations must be received by mail before race day. Race-day registration costs $15 and $20, respectively.

Girls summer softball league forming
An organizational meeting for a local 14-and-under girls summer softball league is scheduled for 9 a.m. April 21 at Wilber Bank on Main St. in Oneonta.
Teams from Cooperstown, Gilbertsville, Oneonta, Otego, Schenevus, Sidney, Walton and Worcester are planning to participate in the National Softball Association-sanctioned league, which is scheduled to run from July 1 to mid-August. Teams from Bainbridge, Franklin, Milford, Morris, Norwich, Sherburne and Unadilla have expressed interest in participating. All teams that wish to play this summer must attend the meeting.
Girls ages 11-14 are eligible to compete in the league, which will follow NSA rules, feature NSA-certified umpires and will culminate with an NSA-sanctioned 14-and-under tournament.

Worcester alumni basketball game set
The Worcester Varsity Club will sponsor its 17th annual Alumni Basketball Games at 6 p.m. April 28.

Baseball series starts in April
The Blue Jays Baseball Club will sponsor an exhibition series near Cooperstown for high school varsity and junior varsity teams from April 28-29 and May 12-13. Teams can play one or two games.
The Blue Jays also will hold three-game summer tournaments for youths ages 13, 14-and-under, 16-and-under, and 18-and-under.

Cobleskill to host basketball camps
SUNY Cobleskill will play host to its Fighting Tigers Basketball Camp for the 14th year this summer under athletic director/men’s basketball coach Kevin McCarthy.
The Tiger "Buddies" Camp for children ages 6-10 runs from 9 a.m.-noon June 25-July 6, excluding weekends and the Fourth of July. Pre-registration cost is $110 per child.
The boys day camp (ages 9-16) runs July 9-13, from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8:30-11 a.m. Friday.
The girls day camp (ages 9-16) runs July 30-Aug. 3, from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Friday.
An additional fee of $10 will be charged to campers who register on the first day.

Softball league is forming
A summer softball league for girls ages 14-and-under is being organized for communities in Otsego and eastern Chenango County. Sanctioned with the National Softball Association, the league would offer girls a chance to play games locally during July and August.
To be eligible, girls must be 14 or younger on Jan. 1, 2007. Basepaths will be 60-feet apart, and the pitching distance will be 40 feet.

Wrestling clinic runs Tuesdays
The Red Dragon Wrestling Clinic Series, for youths ages 5-18, runs Tuesdays and Thursdays through April 17 at Oneonta State’s Chase Gymnasium.
The elementary division will wrestle from 6:30-7:30 p.m., followed by the middle/high school division from 7:30-9 p.m.
Cost is $40 per person and includes a T-shirt.

Soccer club begins registration
The Cooperstown Soccer Club has started registration for its spring recreation league.
Forms have been distributed through local schools and also are available at Church and Scott and the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown. Youths in grades K-6 are eligible.

The Southern Tier Youth Football Conference is currently open to any youth programs in the New York/Pennsylvania area that would like to be considered as a potential member for the upcoming season.

Men’s baseball league seeks players
The Leatherstocking Baseball League is seeking players for its 2007 season.
The league, for men ages 22 and older of all skill levels, is made up of teams from Oneonta, Edmeston, Milford and Cooperstown. The season starts in late May and finishes in early August. A fee is required to participate.

O-State to host festival Fridays
The Oneonta State women’s soccer team and Headwaters Soccer Club will hold the PowerAde Indoor/Outdoor soccer and swim festival on four more Fridays.
The festival continues from 5-9 p.m. May 4 and 11.
All activities for boys and girls in grades 1-6 will take place at the Chase Physical Education Building. In May, some activities will move to Astro Turf Field.
Participants should bring sneakers, swimsuits and snacks.
Advance registration costs $15. Same-day registration costs $20.

Soccer Hall to host dinner May 5
The National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta will host a dinner and a silent auction from 6-9 p.m. May 5 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Eric D. Dettenrieder Memorial Fund.
The fund, which is seeking sponsors, is a non-profit organization that provides recreational and competitive sports programs for young people with special needs. It is named after Oneonta native Dettenrieder, a race coordinator at Hunter Mountain who taught terminally ill children to ski.
The dinner precedes the fund’s Adaptive Soccer Clinic, scheduled for May 6 at the Soccer Hall for more than 20 youths with Down syndrome. Volunteers from the Hartwick College men’s and women’s soccer teams will coach the clinic.

Basketball tourney moved to June
The 3-on-3 Ambush Basketball Tournament has been moved from April to the second weekend in June because a site could not be secured for the event this month, tournament organizer Del Anthony said Tuesday.
The tournament _ for adults ages 18 and older _ will be played at a site to be determined in Oneonta.
Captains who entered teams for the Ambush will receive a $125 credit toward team entry fees for the Del Anthony Classic, a summer basketball league that starts in June.
