Bunt defense
costs Jackets
in STAC loss
Staff Report
For the second straight day, a misplayed bunt proved costly for Oneonta High’s baseball team.
Defending Southern Tier Athletic Conference champion Chenango Valley scored the decisive run in the top of the fifth inning Friday after an errant throw on a bunt, and the host Yellowjackets fell, 6-5.
"We have not executed bunt defense," said OHS coach Joe Hughes, whose team made a similar error that helped Sidney to three third-inning runs in a 6-3 loss Thursday. "It’s a little bit frustrating because we’ve been working on team defense and bunt defense since March 7. At the very least, you should get an out. Even if (the other team makes) a good enough bunt, you should get an out. We’re not even getting an out, and we’re turning them into doubles and triples."
With the score tied at 5, CV’s Derek Stupski _ who homered, doubled and had two RBIs _ drew a walk off losing pitcher Jack Benjamin. Stupski advanced to second on a wild pitch or a passed ball (Hughes said he was unsure). Derek Ferry then bunted toward first, but OHS threw the ball away and Stupski scored.
"We’re either late getting over (to first on bunts), making a bad throw or trying to hit (an infielder) on the run," said Hughes, whose team has lost three straight after starting the season 3-0. "We’ll keep working on it."
OHS scored three times in the third inning to tie the score at 3. Lance Ratchford (2-for-4) hit a two-run single in the inning.
After CV scored an unearned run in the fourth, the Yellowjackets answered. A.J. Herrmann walked, went to third on a single by P.J. McMullen (two hits) and scored on Lane Potter’s groundout to make it 5-5.
OHS _ 1-2 in STAC _had runners on base in each of the last three innings but didn’t score.
The Yellowjackets play two games at home Saturday, starting with a noon STAC game against Seton Catholic Central. OHS follows with a non-leaguer at 3 p.m. against Niskayuna.[an error occurred while processing this directive]
