Schulte misses cut
Staff Report
Davenport graduate Alan Schulte missed the cut by one shot in the 40th annual PGA Professional National Championship on Friday at Sunriver, Oregon.
The 44-year-old Schulte _ the head pro at Hawthorn’s Golf and Country Club in Fishers, Ind. _ made three bogeys over his final seven holes Friday at the par-71 Meadows Course to shoot a 2-over 73. He shot a 2-over 74 in the opening round Thursday at par-72 Crosswater Course.
A three-time Section Four champion at Davenport, Schulte bogeyed the par-4 12th hole Friday and also made bogeys on the par-3 16th and the par-4 18th to finish one shot below the cutline.
Schulte finished runner-up in this event last year, losing in a playoff to Ron Philo Jr. at Turning Stone Casino. Schulte earned $48,000 and a spot in the PGA Championship _ the last of golf’s four major championships.
He shots rounds of 75-77 at Medinah Country Club, missing the cut by eight shots in a tournament won by Tiger Woods.
In 2004, Schulte also qualified for the PGA Championship and shot a 7-over 151 to miss the cut at Whistling Straits.
