Area youth baseball player wins award
Milford resident Kevin Musser, 12, won the Harold Couse Award for Excellence in Baseball during an Aug. 4 awards ceremony for the Milford All Stars.
Kevin, who pitched for the All Stars, received the award at Deane Winsor Park in Milford. Kevin will be a seventh-grader at Milford Central this academic year. He is the son of Katie and Mike Gengenbach, and Kevin Musser Sr., and the grandson of Joan and Alex Musser of New Lisbon, and Betty Parks of New Middletown, Ohio.
Hartwick men to host soccer exhibition
The Hartwick College men’s soccer team will host St. John’s in its final exhibition game of the 2007 preseason at 7:30 p.m. today at Elmore Field. Admission is free.
The Hawks open the regular season Aug. 31 at the Westfield Cup against the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
Soccer tournament starts today
The 2007 Mang Kickoff Classic, featuring boys and girls soccer matches, starts at 1 p.m. today at Sidney Central’s Alumni Field.
Chenango Valley and Windsor will open the girls tournament at 1 p.m. today, and Bainbridge-Guilford will play Sidney at 5 p.m. The boys tournament will have the same match-ups, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, today.
The girls consolation game is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, followed by the boys consolation at 3 p.m. The girls championship is set for 5 p.m. Saturday, followed by the boys final at 7 p.m.
Bowling league to hold meeting today
The Fraternal Bowling League will hold its annual captains’ meeting at 7 p.m. today at Holiday Lanes in Oneonta.
The men’s handicap league features four-man teams and bowls at 6:30 p.m. Fridays. Teams and individuals are welcome to join.

Flag football meeting set for Sept. 3
The annual Unadilla Flag Football League meeting and draft is slated for 6 p.m. Sept. 3rd at The Copper Fox in Oneonta.
Cost is $20 per player and is due by Sept. 16. Those who wish to join the league should attend the meeting. All games will be played at the Otego American Legion.

Softball benefit seeks tourney teams
The Big Ball Benefit for Amber Emerson is set for Sept. 8 at the Otego Little League field.
The softball tournament is for players of all ages, who can also participate in a home run derby.
Cost is $200 per team. A Chinese auction will be featured as well. Proceeds will benefit Emerson, who has Type 1 diabetes and recently had multiple eye surgeries.

Sportsman education courses start Sept. 8
The Meredith Fish and Game Club will host a hunter safety class from 6-9:30 p.m. Sept. 8 and from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 9. The club also will hold a bowhunter safety class from 6-9 p.m. Oct. 2-4.
A trapper training class is set for 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Oct. 7.
Each class has a 30-student limit and requires registration to participate.

OHS football boosters to hold golf event
The third annual Oneonta Football Booster Club golf tournament will have a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Oneonta Country Club.
Cost to participate in the captain-and-crew event is $60 per golfer, which includes a buffet dinner.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams. A new car is among the prizes for hitting a hole-in-one. Hole sponsorships are also available.

Sidney Hall of Fame inductions Sept. 22

Sidney will honor the following people as its Class of 2007 on Sept. 22: Kermit Marble (Class of 1955); Mike Gallup (63); Vinny Lynch (77); and the late Al Drake (coach in 50s and 60s).
Sidney also will present its inaugural Legacy Award, which is designed to honor a championship team. The 1950 Susquenango League football champions, which went 7-0 under coaches Francis Redmond and Drake, will receive the award.
The 2007 inductees will be introduced at halftime of Sidney’s Sept. 21 homecoming game against Lansing, and a post-game reception will follow at the VFW.

Soccer Hall to host tennis event
The first National Soccer Hall of Fame Tennis Tournament will run from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the Oneonta Tennis Club.
Tennis coach and author Jak Beardsworth, the grandson of Soccer Hall of Famer Fred Beardsworth, will appear at the OTC on Saturday. Beardsworth will demonstrate the "7 Core Fundamentals of Personal Best Tennis" and organize a round-robin doubles tournament for players of all levels.
Participants can sign up as doubles teams or as individuals for the rain-or-shine tournament, which has 16 openings. Cost is $35 and includes brunch. Proceeds will support programs at the Soccer Hall. Families of participants are welcome to watch.

Soccer Hall inductions set for Sunday
Mia Hamm and Julie Foudy will headline the 2007 National Soccer Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, which is scheduled for noon Sunday at the Oneonta-based shrine.
The Induction Ceremony, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by the 2007 National Soccer Hall of Fame Game at 2 p.m. Sunday at At-A-Glance Field. Hamm, Foudy and 2006 Hall of Famer Carla Overbeck will play for the Washington Freedom, who will take on the Connecticut Reds in the exhibition game.
Other retired U.S. Women’s National Team standouts such 1999 world champion Tiffany Roberts will compete in the Fame Game, along with members of the 1986 U.S. Women’s National Team. To order tickets, call 607-432-3351.
Fame Game tickets cost $15 for general seating and $75 for choice seating. The latter option reserves seats during the Induction Ceremony and the Fame Game.
Veteran player Bobby Smith and builder Alan Rothenberg also will be inducted Sunday.

RGS to host dinner Sunday
The Lefty Healey Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society will hold its fourth annual Sportsmen’s Banquet at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Binghamton Knights of Columbus, which is located at 136 Park Ave. in Binghamton. Cocktails will be served beginning at 2:30 p.m. and dinner will follow at 4 p.m.
The event will feature a live and silent auction, games, drawings and door prizes.
Tickets cost $20 for RGS members and guests of members, $10 for children younger than 16 and $45 for new or renewing members. The last option includes a one-year RGS membership. Habitat, conservation and sustaining sponsorship packages are also available at $275, $500 and $1,000, respectively.
Proceeds will be used to restore and protect grouse and woodcock habitat.

Golf tourney Sunday at Ouleout
The sixth annual Heart of Gold Golf Tournament will begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start Sunday at the Ouleout Creek Golf Course in Franklin.
The captain-and-crew event, which features a chance to win $5,000 with a hole-in-one, will benefit heart recipients and organ donation. Cost is $50 per person and includes golf, cart and lunch. The top three teams will win cash prizes.

The Oneonta Football Booster Club will host its annual pancake breakfast from 7-11 a.m. Sunday at the Sixth Ward Athletic Club. Cost is $5 per person. Pancakes, sausage and beverages will be served.

Time Warner to carry cycling event
Time Warner Sports is partnering with WCSN-TV, an online sports programmer, to carry the 24th annual Chris Thater Memorial cycling competitions (men’s and women’s professionals) live from noon-4 p.m. Sunday.
More than 1,500 athletes are expected to compete in several running and cycling competitions, which will be based at Recreation Park in Binghamton.
WCSN’s live feed of this event will be available on its Oneonta station at digital channel 1012.
Bowling association to meet Monday
The ChenDelO Bowling Association will hold its fall meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the River Bend Golf Club on Route 8 in New Berlin. The association’s officers and board of directors will meet a half-hour before the event.
ChenDelO will discuss the possibility of sanctioning its youth bowling program with the USBC, state and local associations this year, as well as the rules, locations and other details of two tournaments this season.
All members are encouraged to attend the meeting, where league startup packets including USBC membership forms will be distributed.

OTC to sponsor U.S. Open bus trip
The Oneonta Tennis Club will sponsor a bus trip to the 2007 U.S. Open tennis championships at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday.
The bus will leave the OTC at 7 a.m. and return at 11 p.m. Seats are reserved in Arthur Ashe Stadium and open seating is available at all other courts. A total of 20 seats and tickets are available at a cost of $135 apiece.
