ONEONTA — If the Oneonta Tigers ever become division contenders in September, they'll rue their dive in July. The O-Tigers lost for the ninth time in 11 games Wednesday, falling 61/2 games behind Pinckney Division-leading Mahoning Valley after losing to the Scrappers 8-3 at Damaschke Field.

COOPERSTOWN — "So Close Yet So Far Away," isn't just the title of a Hall and Oates song. It also described the presence of Pete Rose at the National Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Sunday at Clark Sports Center.


Pittsfield doubles up O-Tigers
ONEONTA — Pittsfield's Ron Acuna was double trouble for the Oneonta Tigers Sunday. Acuna scored the winning run on designated hitter John Wilson's single in the tenth inning as Pittsfield defeated the O-Tigers 4-3 in the completion of a suspended game from June 24.


Hall induction one to remember
COOPERSTOWN - It's funny how certain memories seem to stick with you. Most of my childhood is a blur, but there's one family outing that I remember as if it were yesterday. That was my first trip to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, when I was 8 years old.

Hall president having one happy anniversary
COOPERSTOWN — Dale Petroskey must have left a colored sock in his white laundry load. How else can one explain the blue tint in his white collar? Petroskey celebrated his first anniversary as the National Baseball Hall of Fame president on Wednesday, four days before the Hall turns 61 on Sunday.

NILES, Ohio — The Oneonta Tigers continued singing the blues on their six-game road trip, dropping their third straight game with a 2-1 loss to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at Cafaro Field.


Whitetail growth out of control; New York needs new plan

ONEONTA — The Oneonta All-Stars defeated Owego 11-1 Friday in a third-round Little League playoff game in the Williamsport tournament. Ian Frankl earned the victory with a two-hitter. He struck out seven.

NEW BERLIN — Here's the dirt on the seventh round of the U.S. Motocross Championships, which take place this weekend at the Unadilla Valley Sports Center.

ONEONTA — Ron Merrill just may be the most popular guy in the Oneonta Tigers clubhouse. Sure, the O-Tigers shortstop hit the team's first grand slam of the season, which highlighted an eight-run sixth inning in Oneonta's 11-3 victory over New Jersey at Damaschke Field on Wednesday.

With the sun shining in our faces, we started up the old, abandoned road. Birds were singing as the overgrown tote road continued on an uphill grade. We stopped every so often, for there wasn't any real hurry.

ONEONTA — All baseball pitchers are fearful of one dreaded disease: Wildness. It comes in various symptoms, some of which were on display Tuesday in the Oneonta Tigers' 6-4 New York-Penn League loss to New Jersey at Damaschke Field.

DELHI — Mark Lossi doubled and homered in a 2-for-3 effort that led Oneonta Post 259 to an 11-2 victory over Delhi in an American Legion baseball game on Tuesday.

DELHI — Delhi residents swept the Delaware County Junior Golf Championships on Monday at the Delhi College Golf Course. John Holbert won the A Flight, for youths ages 13-15, with a 7-over-par 79. He beat runner-up Ryan Colt by 15 strokes.


Green Earth doubles tennis
ONEONTA — Eric House and Tjalling Heyning remained undefeated at the Green Earth Tennis Tournament after winning two doubles matches during the second day of competition Tuesday at the Wilber Park Tennis Courts.

ONEONTA — Arthur Rigas is winning the game of life. Now he just has to worry about winning the game of football. On Wednesday, the Oneonta City School Board unanimously voted Rigas as Oneonta High's head football coach for the 2000 season.

ONEONTA — The Oneonta Tigers have taken the act of breaking open close games to new heights this season. The O-Tigers put together a big inning late in the game for the second straight time as Oneonta sent 10 men to the plate in a six-run eighth en route to a 9-3 defeat of the Vermont Expos on Wednesday at Damaschke Field.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — New York State's 2000 wrestling champion at 130 pounds, Josh Ruff, recently earned a second-place finish during the High School Coaches Association National Open.

Connolly makes debut
ONEONTA — Now that he's a pro, Mike Connolly is taking it easy. Former Oneonta High left-handed pitcher Connolly made his professional baseball debut with a relief appearance for the Class A Bradenton (Fla.) Pirates on Monday.


Former OHS teammates storming courts again
ONEONTA — Nicola Rizzo and Lindsay Adams are together again. On Friday, the two will play organized basketball on the same squad for the first time since being girls varsity teammates at Oneonta High during the 1998-99 season.

Welch only Hall member born on 4th
Tuesday is the Fourth of July. Since, in looking for something else, I stumbled upon the fact that only one member of the Baseball Hall of Fame was born on that date, it seemed like a good idea for a column. He is listed in the record books as Michael F. (`Smiling Mickey') Welch.


M. Waltrip has been running on empty
The next time I hear a Winston Cup driver grumble about how his personal time is dissolving because of a 34-race, coast-to-coast racing schedule or how he's under an avalanche of sponsorship commitments, I'm going to think of Michael Waltrip. He's the highly popular driver of the No. 7 Nations Rent Chevrolet — and he's on the longest current career losing streak in Winston Cup at 444 races.
