Dragons begin fall season on Friday
ONEONTA All but two teams at Oneonta State will open the 2000 fall sports season this weekend.
The Red Dragons volleyball team has the honor of beginning competition for O-State in playing host to the Holiday Inn/Red Dragon Invitational, which begins at 4 p.m. on Friday.
O-Tigers win 13-2 to stay ahead
JAMAICA Maybe all the Oneonta Tigers needed was a little playoff pressure to shake their midseason misfortune. The O-Tigers won their sixth game in their last seven outings Wednesday with a 13-2 rout of the Queens Kings.

Unadilla Valley girls soccer rebounds; Delhi wins swason opener
NEW BERLIN It's funny how something not made of rubber can bounce back so quickly.
Kristin Lorence had a goal and an assist Monday to lead the Unadilla Valley girls soccer team to a 2-1 defeat of Sidney in a Susquenango Association opener.
O-Tigers lose in 11
ONEONTA Josh Wilson's single with two outs in the top of the 11th inning proved to be the winning run as the Utica Blue Sox outlasted the Oneonta Tigers, 11-10, in a 4-hour, 7-minute game at Damaschke Field Monday. Due to time constraints, the game story will appear in Wednesday's editions of The Daily Star.

UTICA The Oneonta Tigers sure have picked a good time to get hot.
With less than two weeks left in the New York-Penn League season and in the midst of a playoff race the O-Tigers won their season-high fifth straight game Sunday, a 3-0 triumph over Utica.
Leopards Cook up tournament title
SIDNEY Judging from his start, Jon Cook must have been really looking forward to his senior season. Cook scored four goals for the second straight match and took home Mang Tournament MVP honors in leading Laurens to a 5-1 boys soccer victory over Sidney in the tournament final on Saturday.

Tigers have a good times
ONEONTA - When it comes to baseball, Oneonta Tigers manager Gary Green believes in two things: Pitching and defense. His faith was rewarded Thursday when both aspects were on display in the O-Tigers 7-1 victory over Jamestown in the first game of a double-header at Damaschke Field.
O-State women's soccer ranked nationally
ONEONTA The Oneonta State women's soccer team is ranked 24th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason poll. After an 18-3-2 record, a SUNYAC championship and a NCAA Regional semifinal appearance last season, the Red Dragons finished 11th in the final Division III poll.

Tigers may extend contract with Oneonta to four years
ONEONTA It's just a matter of time for the Oneonta Tigers.
The Oneonta Athletic Corp. may receive a contract extension to maintain its New York-Penn League baseball affiliation with the Detroit Tigers for up to four years, an official of the major league club said on Wednesday.
New Hartwick coach is used to winning
ONEONTA Jennifer Barnett is used to being a winner, which could be why she landed the head softball coaching position at Hartwick College.
Barnett, a native of Schenevus, takes over for Barb Hicks as head coach. The Hawks struggled last season, but had 45 victories in 1998 and '99.

O-Tigers tired of losing, fall to Cutters 4-2
ONEONTA The Oneonta Tigers are a tired baseball team.
That can happen after playing 18 games in 14 days.
Fatigue showed Tuesday as the O-Tigers fell to Williamsport 4-2 at Damaschke Field for their fifth loss in the last six games. That's not the kind of stretch a team might look for in the midst of a playoff run.
Team is close to renewing contract, president says
ONEONTA It looks like Oneonta will have the Tigers for another two years.
Oneonta Athletic Corp. President Sam Nader said Tuesday a contract is close to being finalized with the Detroit Tigers that would keep its Class A short-season affiliation in the New York-Penn League with Oneonta through 2002.
OHS wins opening golf event
DELHI Delaware Academy golfer Chris Shultis shot a 2-over-par 74 to win medalist honors, but Oneonta High edged his team by a stroke for first place in the inaugural Delaware Academy Invitational on Tuesday at the Delhi College Golf Course.

Tigers lose 2-1 in 10th
ONEONTA - Seven-inning games just aren't long enough for the Oneonta Tigers.
For the third time in less than a week, the O-Tigers played an extra-inning game as part of a double-header. But Monday's 10th inning proved to be one inning too many.
Megnin honored by NCAA
ONEONTA Ria Megnin, one of the most accomplished athletes in the history of Hartwick College, was awarded one of her biggest honors on Monday. Megnin, who graduated in the spring, was named the 2000 NCAA Woman of the Year for New York.

ONEONTA Bill Atchinson Jr. turned his love for golf and for his father into an annual tournament featuring some of the best amateur golfers in Otsego County.

OHS junior lands 11-pound tiger muskie
RICHFIELD This one didn't get away from Oneonta High junior Eric Trelease.
On Aug. 5 at Canadarago Lake, Trelease caught an 11-pound, 37-inch tiger muskie. Trelease, who was fishing for walleye on a pontoon boat, used a jig in water that was approximately 15 feet deep to land the fish.

Archers divide to conquer in mountains at Muzzy Shoot
Dark clouds hung ominously over the Catskill peaks last weekend. Early Saturday morning, 157 archers assembled under a large, white tent, waiting. A steady downpour continued as the traditional archers were to be paired up for the first shoot of the famous Muzzy Shoot.
O-Tigers split with Muckdogs
ONEONTA - The Oneonta Tigers were a half-inning away from taking the lead for the final playoff spot in the New York-Penn League.
That was a half-inning too much.

Local paddler in 7th heaven
ONEONTA Al Shaver Jr. must not be afraid of the dark. Otherwise he wouldn't have entered the Weyerhauser Ausable Canoe Marathon in Grayling, Mich. on July 29.
"It's what they call the second leg of the triple crown," said Shaver, 33, of Meridale. "It's a night-time race. You start at 9 p.m. and go until sometime the next afternoon. It's about 151/2 hours."
Just a few weeks ago, Shaver became the first New York State resident to place seventh in both the General Clinton Canoe Regatta the first leg of the triple crown and the Weyerhauser Marathon.
Softball camp splits residents, planners
