Freshman returns to help 'Skins tie in CSC
COOPERSTOWN — Another game, another tie for the Cooperstown boys soccer team. Freshman Reid Snyder scored with 22 minutes left in regulation to help the Redskins forge a 1-1 draw with Morrisville (3-5-1) in the Center State Conference.

ONEONTA — Stamford native Liz McGrail became Oneonta State's all-time scoring leader in soccer on Friday in the Red Dragons' 11-2 SUNY Athletic Conference defeat of Buffalo State.

ONEONTA — The Upper Susquehanna Pedalers and Paddlers held its final bicycle time trial of the 2000 season on Aug. 27. Wayne Santos won the event in 25 minutes, 38 seconds.


Unatego graduate making progress with Ithaca cross country program

MIAMI — The Oneonta State men's soccer team allowed five Florida International players to score on Sunday in losing its second Atlantic Soccer Conference match, 5-1. O-State is 4-3-1 overall and 0-2 in the league. FIU improved to 5-2, 1-0 in the ASC.

ALFRED — Jeremy Cornue led all runners with a 29:08 as the Delhi Tech men's cross country team won the Alfred State Invitational on Saturday. Cornue has won all four races he has competed in this season and the Broncos are ranked first in the latest NJCAA Division III national poll. Delhi Tech has not been out of the top spot since September of 1998.

DELHI — After winning its first three games, the Unatego football team was literally grounded against Delhi on Friday. Led by Brett Sohns, the Bulldogs' ground attack gained 359 yards on 52 carries as Delhi handed Unatego a 26-0 loss.


Laurens soccer getting its kicks
ONEONTA — The Laurens boys soccer team won more than 85 percent of their games last season. At 9-0 thus far, the 2000 squad has been even better. So has senior midfielder Jonathan Cook. With Cook leading the way with 22 goals (after scoring 35 a year ago), the Leopards have established themselves as the clear-cut favorite in the Tri-Valley League.


Stewart's mouth is as fast as his car
Tony Stewart needs to go to the Bear Bryant School of Public Speaking.
Remember when Bryant was football coach at Alabama? Instead of explaining why his team would knock the tar out of a 40-point underdog, he would tell the nation the only way his national powerhouse team could stay close in the game against Mule Rock Tech was if his cousin got to be the referee.

BROCKPORT — Amy DuCharme's first-half goal on a penalty kick snapped a scoreless tie and helped the Oneonta State women's soccer team Brockport State 2-0 on Friday in a SUNY Athletic Conference match.


Suprise: G-MU is team to beat
ONEONTA — The Tri-Valley League is full of one thing when it comes to girls soccer: surprises. Nearly midway into the 2000 season, Schenevus is still unbeaten. Worcester, which didn't win a game last year, has played defending league co-champion Milford close in two games. Cherry Valley-Springfield has already surpassed last season's victory total.


This year's baseball picks clearly unclear
With the season winding down, it's time for my picks regarding baseball's annual awards. This year, partly because of unconscionably long disabled lists, the choices are less clear-cut.

DELHI — Caitlin Roche posted a 9-2 victory at No. 1 singles as Delhi won all five matches. Delhi (4-1) will play host to Windsor at 4:15 p.m. Monday.

ONEONTA — Two-hundred and counting. Jeff Gallusser scored three goals for the Oneonta High boys soccer team in a 7-0 defeat of Delhi on Thursday, contributing to coach Alex Brannan's 200th career victory.

ONEONTA — All of the Oneonta State varsity athletic teams will play on the road this weekend. Beginning on Friday, the Red Dragons' volleyball team (5-8) will play in the first SUNY Athletic Conference round-robin tournament at Plattsburgh.

COBLESKILL — Matt Goll scored an unassisted winner with 14:34 left to help Cobleskill improve to 7-1-1. Goll's goal was the last of the game as all three were scored in a span of less than 7 minutes.

COOPERSTOWN — Although the Cooperstown girls soccer team won a share of the Class C state championship in 1999, the Redskins know what it's like to lose.

ONEONTA — There will be a new twist this year to the men's soccer rivalry between Hartwick College and Oneonta State. After 12 meetings in the NCAA Tournament and the Mayor's Cup, the two teams will meet in a regular season Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) game this year.


Worcester girls are fit to be tied; Laurens boys remain undefeated
WORCESTER — The Worcester girls soccer team is literally working overtime to erase memories of last season's winless campaign. Heather Anderson made 12 saves Tuesday to help the Wolverines forge a 1-1 draw with Milford, the defending co-champions of the Tri-Valley League.


Cobleskill sweeps Delhi Tech
DELHI — Ashley Archambea, Bobby-Jo Levesque, and Megan Lafferty all scored for the Cobleskill women's soccer team Tuesday in a 3-1 victory over Delhi Tech. The Fighting Tigers improved to 2-5 and the Broncos dropped to 1-7.

I should mention at the outset that my viewpoint on this is not exactly objective; I have opposed the concept of the DH from the time it was adopted.

ONEONTA — Ordinarily, a 4-0 start by a combined score of 30-0 would make a coach smile from ear-to-ear. Not Helen Sandford. Despite the Oneonta High girls soccer team's torrid start to the 2000 season, Sandford said there's no reason to celebrate because she still doesn't know how good her team really is.


Catching big one is worth trip to Pulaski, where salmon run strong
The days are getting shorter and the nights are cooling down. We had a couple of frosts, and nature is beginning to paint the hillsides red, yellow and orange. As fall approaches, the deer begin to lose their velvet and the geese noisily honk while heading south in their great V-formations.

ONEONTA — The Oneonta State men's soccer team got all tied up Friday when it opened defense of its Mayor's Cup championship. Goals by Ryan Rummery and Allister Wiltshire helped the Red Dragons forge a 2-2 draw with Iona at Hartwick's Elmore Field in the opening match of the 25th annual Mayor's Cup tournament.

ONEONTA — Even without looking at the schedule, the Oneonta Tigers' game against Utica on Wednesday felt like a season finale. The game was played with little urgency, in chilly, autumn-like weather, and featured a host of errors and took place before a sparse crowd — even by Damaschke Field standards.

ONEONTA — With 35 years as the head of the Oneonta Athletic Corp., Sam Nader is obviously working in the right field. Now, he's working to get a better one. Damaschke Field, home of the OAC's Oneonta Tigers, will be upgraded to professional standards over the next two years, OAC President Nader said on Tuesday.


O-State men's soccer ranked, move 2-0
ONEONTA — Nationally-ranked Oneonta State earned its second straight Division I men's soccer victory after defeating Marist, 1-0, in the Red Dragons' home opener on Tuesday. On Saturday, O-State opened the season with a 1-0 overtime defeat of Lafayette.

QUEENS — The Oneonta Tigers dropped back to .500 after a 3-2 loss in 11 innings to the Queens Kings in a New-York Penn League baseball game on Thursday. Alexis Rios, who was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a single and an error, scored the winning on a wild pitch by O-Tigers pitcher Keith Law (2-2).


Hawks to open season tonight
ONEONTA — Hartwick College men's soccer coach Jim Lennox opens the fall season against old friends today. The Hawks play host to a 7 p.m. game at Elmore Field against Fairfield University, which is coached by former Hartwick players Carl Rees and Paul Cushion.

ONEONTA — Matt LoPiccolo, who is one of several new athletic staff members at Oneonta State, has been named head coach for the Red Dragons' cross country and track and field teams.
