The Smart Money
This makes three consecutive winning weeks, doesn't it? I didn't have to ask. I have it written down. I've hit seven of my past nine games, and all I know is that if I ever have another losing week I'm going to have to pull out the owners' manual for my computer to try to find the minus sign on this keyboard.

A letter to the editor: From the Subway Series to New Hampshire
Dear Dean, Buddy, have I got some stories to tell you. Thursday night's game at Shea Stadium was the most electric event I've ever witnessed. From watching Mets pitcher Al Leiter stalk around the mound all evening to Mike Piazza's rope that Bernie Williams caught to end the 2000 baseball season, the game was amazing.

Labonte looks to avoid being part of some dubious company
The first thing that comes to mind when I think of blowing a big lead and a chance at a championship are the 1964 Philadelphia Phillies. They squandered a 61/2-game edge in the National League pennant race with 10 to play and finished in a tie for second behind St. Louis. Five years later, the Cubs gagged on a hair ball as they watched a black cat jinx them and the Mets zoom past in their miracle year of 1969. Then there are all those times Greg Norman came back to the field after holding leads in the golfing majors. In Winston Cup, with only three races remaining, I don't see such a collapse happening. It appears to be Bobby Labonte's year in Joe Gibbs' No. 18 Interstate Batteries Pontiac.

Plenty specialize in more than one sport

Fans like Gordon more when he's not winning
It can't just be my imagination, because other people have noticed it, too. Jeff Gordon isn't hated as much as he used to be. Even when his No. 24 DuPont Monte Carlo hits the wall and smokes its way into the garage, the fans' joy doesn't seem as genuine. I don't think any of them really want to run him over in the parking lot anymore nor for him to catch on fire.
