OHS girls give coach Zeh first victory
ONEONTA — If Bob Zeh ever wondered if he was ready to coach again, he got his answer Wednesday night. In his first game as a head coach in four seasons, the 58-year-old Section Four Hall of Famer spent the entire time standing, pacing, yelling, encouraging and sweating his way through the Oneonta High girls' 42-33 victory over Delhi in the first round of the Anthony C. Drago Tip-Off Tournament. "I forgot how hard this was," said Zeh, who retired as the Oneonta boys coach after the 1996-97 season. "I said to myself before the game that I was just going to sit there. I'm too old to be all sweaty like this.

Anything's possible in NFC Central as Lions play at Minnesota tonight

No joke: Edgemont's running game was too tough for Walton
Are you kidding me? Anyone rooting for Walton football had to ask that more than once Friday at the Carrier Dome. I asked myself that very question a few times on the drive up. But the same phrase brings hope — and high expectations — to the Oneonta and Schenevus girls soccer teams. Though both squads came one goal away from winning at least a share of state championships last weekend in classes B and D, respectively, return appearances in the 2001 finals won't be nearly as surprising as this season's inaugural trips.

OHS girls reach finals
SCOTTSVILLE - If the Oneonta High girls soccer team could be reincarnated as a boxer, it would probably come back as Lennox Lewis. Like the WBC and IBF heavyweight champion, the Yellowjackets tend to paw and jab just enough to keep an opponent at arm's length. It may not be spectacular, but it's enough to win - and win often.

Bills and Giants should fare well; Jets will have tough one
It's getting late in the season, and I really could use a week off to rest my brain. But I guess that's not going to happen. I'll even be working through Thanksgiving. Last year I was off that day and at a home where a tofu "turkey" was served. Here's a non-football tip. The next time you hear someone say, "it tastes just like turkey," grab your coat and run like the wind.

Flutie won't lose in old stomping grounds; G-Men to win

Changing series not as easy as changing lanes
When race drivers change from one series to another — be it trucks to cars, or Busch to Winston Cup — a lot of the variables change, but one remains constant: They are sitting on the left side of the car like any other driver on the highway who's not driving a Rolls-Royce or a little mail truck.

Olympian Cerbone has a Hall of a homecoming
COOPERSTOWN — The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum prides itself as a place where people of all generations can come and learn about baseball history. It also works as a good place for a reunion. On Thursday, the Hall played host to family and friends of Italian national team pitcher Marc Cerbone, as the Cooperstown-born pitcher donated his Olympic jersey and a game ball to the Hall.

CHENANGO FORKS — The Sidney girls cross country team moved up a class Thursday and moved on to the state championships. Delhi, Walton are familiar foes

Top-seed Stamford bedeviled by MCS
STAMFORD — It takes a lot more than a top-seed and a top-ranking to scare the Margaretville girls soccer team. 'Jackets get physical with CV
ONEONTA — Before the Oneonta High and Chenango Valley girls soccer teams played Wednesday, Olivia Newton-John should have been on hand to sing the anthem. Not to croon `The Star-Spangled Banner.' But to perform her signature hit, `Let's Get Physical.' That's what the second-seeded Yellowjackets and third-seeded Warriors did during their Section Four Class B semifinal at Wright National Soccer Campus.

A deer's nose knows when a hunter approaches
All afternoon the squirrels sounded like little freight trains, as they noisily gathered acorns among the giant oaks. Back and forth, up and down. The little critters were definitely preparing for winter. Unlike last year, there is a bumper crop of beechnuts and acorns. Nature usually takes care of its own.
