ONEONTA SoccerTown, USA, huh?
No offense to the National Soccer Hall of Fame, the undefeated 1999 Class B state champion Oneonta High boys nor the Division I men's programs at Oneonta State and Hartwick College.
But the area's top sports stories in Y2K were all about baseball.

Three playoff games will go to the 'dogs
The opening week of the postseason already is proving to be one of the most bizarre in history, with three of the four road teams being installed as favorites. That is stunning, because in the 22 years since the NFL went to a wild-card format, there have been a total of only six first-round home underdogs, and they won each game outright.

STAMFORD Brooke Davis scored 23 points and had nine steals to lead the Stamford girls basketball team over Laurens, 57-47, in the first round of the Stamford Christmas Tournament on Thursday. Renee Sloan had a team-high 10 rebounds.
Buzzer-beater lifts Milford boys; Sidney wins
EDMESTON Ben Cotter's buzzer-beater capped a wild victory for the Milford boys basketball team, which defeated Unadilla Valley, 52-50, to win the Edmeston Christmas Tournament championship on Thursday.

Mustangs end hex, upset SK
LAURENS The Morris High boys basketball team earned its first victory of the season Wednesday, defeating South Kortright, 51-43, in the first round of the Ray Clement Tournament.
Senior Mike Waffle led the Mustangs with a game-high 20 points, including three 3-pointers and a 3-for-5 effort from the free throw line in the final quarter.
Backus leads G-MU past Afton in Tubby Crane
AFTON Gavin Backus scored five of his team-high 26 points in the last minute of Gilbertsville-Mount Upton's 67-64 boys basketball victory over Afton in Wednesday's first round of the Tubby Crane Tournament.
Wick senior is All-American
ONEONTA Senior Greg Balcavage was selected as a USAFOOTBALL.COM All-American at tight end on Wednesday. Balcavage was named to the Division III offensive second-team.

OHS graduate Miller leads Ithaca
ONEONTA Oneonta High graduate Matt Miller, an Ithaca College junior, ended the winter college semester with high marks. On Dec. 16, Miller scored a collegiate high of 29 points in an 89-63 men's basketball defeat of Bradford.

Sidney girls give Oneonta first loss
ONEONTA The Oneonta girls basketball team was home for the holidays on Saturday, but it was nothing close to sweet.
Sidney held six Oneonta players scoreless in a 47-36 Susquenango Association victory. The Yellowjackets and first-year coach Bob Zeh took their first loss of the season, falling to 5-1 overall.
Windham boys earn title at Stamford
STAMFORD John Pelham's double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds led the undefeated Windham boys basketball team to a title as the Warriors defeated Stamford, 60-53, on Saturday in the Stamford Christmas Tournament championship.
Storm wrestlers beat Deposit; Walton can't recover at Greene
NEW BERLIN Seth Diters gave Unadilla Valley an insurmountable lead with a 6-0 decision over Sean Flynn at 171 pounds as the Storm went on to a 34-28 defeat of Deposit in wrestling on Saturday.

OHS boys shine in big victory
ONEONTA It may have lacked the star power of last season's meetings, but the first Sidney-Oneonta boys basketball game of 2000-2001 still had the drama.
Senior guard Tim Miller hit a 3-pointer and two foul shots in the final minute to put the Yellowjackets over the top in their 58-57 Susquenango Association victory Friday at Drago Gym.
Delhi boys hang on against Harpursville
DELHI Sean Whittaker and the Delhi boys basketball team blocked Harpursville from a Susquenango Association victory as the Bulldogs won, 40-39, on Friday night.
Doug Vredenburgh hit two free throws to put Delhi (4-3 overall, 3-2 Sus) ahead by the final score with 25.3 seconds remaining. With several fouls to give, Delhi whittled the time down to 8.3 seconds.
Advantage will go to Giants; no postseason for Jets
In their history, the Giants are 8-3 at home this late in the season at the Meadowlands, including 9-2 vs. the spread. Two of those losses were in the postseason, against the Rams and Vikings. ...

I admit it.
Every time Helen Sandford's name comes up around the office, I'm the first one to start humming the "Sanford & Son" theme song.

DELHI Kelly Hilson and Amber Sohns led Delhi to a Susquenango Association rout with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Delhi (3-3), which also got 10 points from Kaitlin Morley, broke open the game with a 20-6 second quarter for a 30-16 lead at the half.

After leading the Oneonta High girls soccer team to a 21-2-1 finish in the fall, Sandford stands seven victories away from becoming the winningest coach in New York State history.
'Wick Hurley named the Empire 8 Player of Week
ONEONTA Junior forward Tiffany Hurley was named the Empire 8 Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 17.

Utica pioneer to be inducted into stock car hall in January

It has taken me only 15 weeks to reach the stratosphere of the high $500s as I approach the playoffs. As usual, I will get to pick postseason games no matter how high or low my total, so there's not really much pressure on me to win all my games or even type accurately. ONEONTA Two-time Daily Star Coach of the Year Bob Zeh reached another milestone on Wednesday night.
The winningest coach in Oneonta High boys basketball history earned his 400th overall victory when the Yellowjackets girls basketball team defeated Bainbridge-Guilford, 32-30, on Wednesday.

ONEONTA Greg Balcavage, a Delhi graduate, became the fifth Hartwick College football player to be honored as an All-American since the program was reinstated in 1992.

ONEONTA From state finalists to all-state. That's the path four area girls soccer players took in 2000. Oneonta High's Melissa Pidgeon and Melissa Mattice as well as Sarah Bleich and Krista Jester of Schenevus were selected All-New York State this week by the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports (NYSSCOGS).
Stamford's Davis reaches 1,000 point mark; UV needs OT
DOWNSVILLE Wednesday was a big day for Brooke Davis.
On the same day it was announced the Stamford senior was named first-team all-state in soccer, Davis scored her 1,000th varsity point in basketball during the fourth quarter of the Indians' 54-16 victory over Downsville.

ONEONTA Mark Rathbun bowled a 300 game in the ISD Classic Nov. 29 at Holiday Lanes. It was Rathbun's 13th 300 and the second in the ISD Classic this year. He finished with a 726 series.
A late-season hunt could still produce a first-rate deer
My son came in last weekend and asked why I wasn't out hunting. I had loads of excuses, primarily that it was too cold. Probably I should have been out there chasing after my buck. I hadn't taken one yet, but really wasn't feeling any urgency.

ONEONTA On its way to the Class C state final four last season, the Sidney boys basketball team won a handful of trophies. Two games into the 2000-01 season, the Warriors earned another.
Michael Graham scored a game-high 26 points to help the Warriors successfully defend their Anthony C. Drago Tip-Off Tournament championship with a 52-31 victory over Delhi at Oneonta High on Saturday.
O-State women beat Brockport; Cobleskill, Delhi Tech men win
BROCKPORT Paula Polce was 11-for-18 from the floor for 24 points in leading the Oneonta State women's basketball team to a 61-57 SUNY Athletic Conference victory over Brockport on Saturday.
After O-State took a 32-24 lead at the break, Brockport went on an 8-0 run to tie the game with 16:27 to play.

The G-forces from last week's three-game crash almost knocked me off my pedestal. The Bills (-$55), Chiefs (-$50) and Rams (-$45) made my Thanksgiving football weekend a disaster.
Success restores pride of the Yankees in Bronx
When the final out of the 1920 World Series was made, the Cleveland Indians were World Champions for the first time and in record fashion.
They were the only team to wrap up a best-of-9 World Series in seven games; the other three 1903, 1919 and 1921 all went eight.
At that time the New York Yankees had never won a pennant, and, in fact, had finished last more recently (1912) than they had been a contender (1904, when a historic wild pitch by Jack Chesbro doomed them to second). That was soon to change, and dramatically.

Afton boys beat Stamford
