Unatego seventh-grader wins sectional title

Thirteen-year-old Eric Decker, a seventh-grader at Unatego, stunned top-seeded and two-time Section Four champion Lucas Quarella of Whitney Point, 6-4 on Saturday night, to win the 103-pound title at the Section Four Wrestling Tournament.
O-State women play for keeps
UTICA Oneonta State's second SUNY Athletic Conference championship in women's basketball was definitely a keeper.
The top-seeded Red Dragons won their 24th consecutive game and set a school record for most victories in a season with a 68-63 defeat of No. 2 Cortland State on Saturday at the Utica Auditorium.

ITHACA Sidney's Josh DuMond and Walton's Bryan Malia each won two events Friday night at a non-scoring age group meet at Cornell University.

Third quarter spells end for Oneonta girls
FENTON The first half of Friday night's game gave Oneonta's girls every reason to believe they could knock off No. 2 seed Chenango Valley in a Section Four Class B basketball quarterfinal.
That, however, was before the third quarter.
The Warriors scored a whopping 31 points in the third on 15-for-19 shooting from the floor en route to a 61-46 victory.

The Oneonta State women's basketball team tied a school record for victories in a season with a 62-58 defeat of Fredonia in the SUNY Athletic Conference semifinals on Friday at the Utica Auditorium.

Delhi, Walton advance to final
DELHI Jeanine Barber had 10 assists and six kills, and Kristin Vogt added nine kills to lead Delhi to a 15-1, 15-7, 15-2 Section Four Class C semifinal volleyball victory Thursday over Hancock.
The Bulldogs, who are the defending sectional champions, will play Walton in the title match at noon Saturday at Johnson City.
Favorites are few in Section Four tournament
ONEONTA Perhaps more so than any in recent history, this weekend's Section Four wrestling tournament offers little in the way of sure things.

Local resident says Daytona area quiet after fatal crash
ONEONTA The Daytona 500 is like the Super Bowl of NASCAR races; an annual spectacle complete with parties and celebrations. Not this year. Not after Dale Earnhardt, NASCAR's biggest star, was killed in a crash on the final lap of Sunday's running. Wayne Hymers, owner of Otsego Auto Crushers, was at the race in Daytona Beach, Fla. He said Earnhardt's death cast a pall on the event.

ONEONTA The Gilbertsville-Mount Upton girls basketball team is like the Atlanta Braves of the Tri-Valley League.
Despite reaching the championship round for so many years, both teams have just one title to show for it.

Delhi girls clinch Div. III
HARPURSVILLE The Delhi girls basketball team clinched its second straight Division III crown in the Susquenango Association on Saturday with a 53-40 victory over Harpursville
The Bulldogs, who are 12-6 overall, improved to 9-5 in the league, one game better than Unatego in the division. Freshman Meaghan Morley led Delhi with 11 points and went 3 of 3 from 3-point range. "It was the best game of her career," coach Dick Alwine said.
Cobleskill men's basketball
SCHENECTADY Kyle Jones became Cobleskill's all-time scoring leader after his game-high 23 points led the Fighting Tigers to a victory on Saturday.
Jones, who also had 12 rebounds, passed 1997 graduate Keith Kelley for the all-time lead. Jones is a second-year forward at Cobleskill and has 996 points.

DELHI The Delhi Tech men's basketball team won its 22nd straight game Saturday, 95-62 over North Country.
Balford McLeod and Carlton Graham scored 16 points apiece for the Broncos, who are 24-1 overall. Rodney Pete had 15 points and five rebounds.
Delhi Tech, which is ranked fifth in the NJCAA Division III national rankings, will play at Adirondack at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Women whip Geneseo; men lose fifth straight
ONEONTA Patti Schroh and Paula Polce scored 25 points apiece Saturday as the Oneonta State women's basketball team won its 18th straight game, 79-60 over Geneseo at Alumni Fieldhouse.
Schroh also had a game-high 14 rebounds and Polce had 11. Kristin Lemon had 13 points, six rebounds and six assists.
Hurley leads Hawks
ONEONTA Junior forward Tiffany Hurley scored 30 points and had 15 rebounds as the Hartwick College women's basketball team took a 65-56 victory over Nazareth in an Empire 8 Conference game on Saturday at Binder Gymnasium.

Hawks set for pool party
ONEONTA After taking a year to build his team, Hartwick College women's water polo head coach Michael Maroney will get a chance to see his squad in competition on Saturday.
The Hawks open their inaugural NCAA Division I season at the Princeton Invitational. Hartwick's first game will be at 10:05 a.m. against Michigan State.
Ice age set to begin at O-State
ONEONTA The emergence of a new athletic team will take sports at Oneonta State to a whole new playing field: an ice rink.
What had been only a concept last fall will become reality next week when the O-State ice hockey team plays its first game. The club was founded by Tamara Moore, a residential advisor at Oneonta State. She said a student's interest in ice hockey sparked her curiosity.
Playoff run starts this weekend for Red Dragons

O-State wrestlers win finale, 30-13
ONEONTA Oneonta State ended its dual-meet wrestling season with a 30-13 defeat of the University of Scranton on Wednesday night.
After Blaire Surgent dropped a 5-4 decision at 165 pounds to open the meet, O-State (4-13) won the next six weight classes. Freshman Derek Joines tied the team score at 3-3 with an 8-2 decision over Scranton freshman Tim Grover.
OHS girls lose everything in last second
ONEONTA In the span of a half-second, the Oneonta High girls basketball team saw its shot at a division championship evaporate.
Whitney Point got the winning basket on a putback with 0.5 seconds remaining to claim a 43-41 victory Wednesday and win Division I of the Susquenango Association for the second straight season.
Oneonta needed to beat the Eagles as well as win Saturday at Oxford to claim at least a share of the division title.
O-State Academic Honors
ONEONTA Oneonta State placed 42 student-athletes on the SUNY Athletic Conference All-Academic Team for the fall season.
To qualify for the honor, a student-athlete must have carried a 3.3 grade point average while playing a varsity sport for the entire fall season. Those maintaining a 3.3 GPA over three semesters earned Commissioner's List status, which 20 O-State athletes received.

O-State's Polce earns second league honor
ONEONTA The honors keep rolling in for Oneonta State senior women's basketball player Paula Polce. For the second time this season, Polce has earned SUNY Athletic Conference player of the week honors. Polce, a forward, averaged 26.3 points per game last week in leading the Red Dragons women to three victories. Polce leads the SUNYAC in scoring (19.5 ppg) and averages 7.1 rebounds per game. Oneonta is 14-1 in the conference and 18-1 overall.
Oneonta High graduate Knapp among Div. II rebounding leaders
ONEONTA Merrimack junior Stacy Knapp is rebounding in a big way.
The Oneonta native and Merrimack sophomore is second among women's basketball players in the Northeast-10 Conference and fifth in the country among Division II schools with 12 rebounds per game.
Knapp, a graduate of Oneonta High, recently earned her seventh NE-10 honor roll mention after averaging 14 points, 19.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in two games during late January.

Sidney boys lose second straight
WHITNEY POINT The impending showdown between the Sidney and Windsor boys basketball teams lost some of its luster Saturday.
While the Warriors were losing 59-48 to Whitney Point, the Knights knocked off Oneonta, 63-49, to clinch Division I of the Susquenango Association for the fourth straight season.
Had Sidney won Saturday, it could have clinched the division with a victory at home over Windsor on Tuesday.
O-State women reach sweet 16
BUFFALO The streak continues for the Oneonta State women's basketball team.
Paula Polce scored 24 points, going 10-for-15 from the field and 4-for-4 from the line, to lead the Red Dragons to a 66-56 SUNY Athletic Conference victory Saturday over Buffalo State. It was O-State's 16th straight triumph.

TANNERSVILLE The Windham boys basketball team found a good time to finally take a lead on Hunter-Tannersville.
John Pelham's putback with eight seconds left gave the Warriors their only lead of the game and capped a comeback from a 10-point deficit as Windham stayed unbeaten with a 58-57 Delaware League victory on Friday.
"These guys just find a way to get ahead when the buzzer goes off," H-T coach Randy Mudge said.

Bears rally again
ONEONTA The Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton wrestling team certainly knows how to Locke up a victory. For the third time in a week, late triumphs by Ben and Chris Locke helped the Bears, who are ranked 19th in the state among large schools, win a dual meet.
It happened again Thursday as Ben Locke earned a 14-2 decision over Fran Carter at 189 pounds and Chris Locke took a 12-0 decision over Liam Murray at 215 pounds to propel B-G/A to a 35-28 victory over Oneonta.

SIDNEY Freshman Mike Konstanty scored a team-high 21 points, including a critical three-pointer early in overtime as Oneonta High surprised Sidney, 67-62, Wednesday night in a Susquenango Association basketball thriller.
Konstanty, who started the season on the junior varsity and was playing in his fifth varsity game, hit a three from the left wing with 3 1/2 minutes left in overtime to give the Yellowjackets a 59-58 lead.
Eagles on verge of greatness
ROXBURY The Downsville boys basketball team is on the cusp of two milestones.
With Wednesday's 57-40 triumph over Roxbury, the Eagles clinched at least a tie for the Delaware League's Mountain Division championship for the first time in eight years. It was also coach Jeff Baier's 199th career victory.
