Minnesota title is a long shot
No asterisk is needed for the four-star grade that 61* deserves. The movie debuted in grand fashion Saturday night on HBO. Director Billy Crystal did a superb job of explaining the travails of New York Yankees teammates Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle during their chase of Babe Ruth's home run record in 1961 (even if he did blast sportswriters in the process).

No need to wait: Clemens deal was good for Yankees
One of Branch Rickey's favorite theories was that it took at least four years to evaluate a player trade. Since I agree, at least in principle, some people might think it presumptuous of me to assess, only two years after the fact, the trade that brought Roger Clemens to the New York Yankees for two left-handers, David Wells and Graeme Lloyd, and infielder Homer Bush. But when fact and theory are on a collision course, theory is the one that has to give way.

Memo to NASCAR: Crash-free races make for boring TV
I conducted an independent survey this week that probably isn't statistically significant, but I stand by my work. I polled four race fans regarding last Sunday's Talladega 500, and if NASCAR is listening, the results might horrify them. Exactly 100 percent of the respondents said the race severely sapped their viewing energy long before the last of the 188 laps on the 2.66-mile oval. One guy said he purposely missed the first 90 minutes.

Four new names for our little Indians
It's a good thing Indiana isn't part of New York State. Besides some serious zoning issues, the word "Indian" is somewhere in there. We red-blooded Americans — especially the righteous citizens of New York — don't want to offend anyone that we've been offending since 1492.

Some records are made to be broken, but not these
A year or so back, during halftime of a basketball game, I was asked which baseball record was least likely to be broken. Knowing that the question referred to career records, I unhesitatingly replied: Cy Young's 511 games won. In another context, I might have given a different answer: Joe DiMaggio 56-game hitting streak, for example. But I'm going to address the subject of records from a different angle. I can think of at least two records that can't be broken because they involve irreducible minimums, and two of them that can't even be tried because the conditions under which they were set no longer exist.

Jeff Gordon is not a bad little driver
This column is about Jeff Gordon. I say that right off as a reader service to those race fans who hate his guts and are the first ones to throw licorice whips at the TV when No. 24 takes the lead in a race. I hope to see you folks again next week. Now, down to business.

Sadler says jealousy, self-doubt don't eat at him anymore
We sure have learned a lot about 25-year-old Elliott Sadler since he won at Bristol in the Food City 500 on March 25. He holds the South Boston (Va.) Speedway record of eating 16 fried bologna sandwiches in a six-hour stretch in 1992, and he sits on a lucky coin during races. He also won't be confused with a fellow bursting with confidence, for there were a lot of hard times during the two seasons preceding Sadler's resurgence in the No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford this season. He is eighth in points thanks to an influx of confidence and the added dollars provided by a new sponsor, Motorcraft.
