Who came in second?
BAINBRIDGE — Like Garfunkel, Oates and the Vice President, Jeff Kolka works under a large shadow. Such is life as Serge Corbin's canoeing partner. But playing the second fiddle is just fine by Kolka, the Grayling, Mich., resident who teamed with Corbin to win the 70-mile C-2 Pro Class race Monday at the 39th annual General Clinton Canoe Regatta.

The Yellowjackets sent 10 men to the plate in a six-run first inning and junior pitcher Kyle Thomas took care of the rest during a 9-2 Section Four Class B quarterfinal victory over Chenango Valley at Damaschke Field.

Stewart, Luyendyk are pretty good liars
I'm here to report that Arie Luyendyk and Tony Stewart are big, fat liars. I'm glad that they are, but that doesn't change my feelings. Both popular drivers are entered in Sunday's Indianapolis 500, and in Stewart's case, also in that night's 600-mile Winston Cup race in Charlotte, the longest on the NASCAR circuit.

From 1973-95, the former outfielder and designated hitter amassed 3,110 hits, 465 home runs and 1,833 RBIs, won seven gold gloves and made the All-Star team every year from 1977-88. The importance of Yankees pitching
Sometime between the Franco-Prussian War and the end of the 19th Century, the following occurred: General Von Schlieffen, chief of staff of the German Imperial Army, admonished his colleagues that, in the event circumstances seemed to warrant another invasion of France, they should make sure the right wing of the invading army was strong. Unfortunately for Germany, by the time that happened Schlieffen was years in his grave, and his advice was almost totally ignored. Indeed, if one can judge by the facts of history, it would appear that the only people with the least comprehension of the point he was trying to make were the successive owners of the New York Yankees.

I'd like to see him make a mockery of the points system, which doesn't properly reward drivers for first-place glory, by clinching the driving title without earning a victory.
