O-Tigers' lead in division goes to the 'Dogs
The Oneonta Tigers have learned a lot in the two weeks since the New York-Penn League season began. Their newest lesson: Dealing with a losing streak. The O-Tigers dropped their second game in a row Friday night, a 5-4 setback to the host Batavia Muckdogs.
Yount's comeback attempt is way out of right field

O-Tigers fall to Muckdogs, 3-1, lose ground atop division
Maybe the baseball gods had it in for the Oneonta Tigers on Thursday. Just a few days removed from a string of 1-0 victories all in which the O-Tigers got the winning run in their last at-bat Oneonta allowed the host Batavia Muckdogs to score twice in the bottom of the eighth in a 3-1 defeat.
It's always the same: We should have been there yesterday
A couple of years ago, a friend and I went to New Brunswick, Canada, to hunt black bears. The weather was hot and muggy, and the bears were not hitting the bait. The outfitter kept saying it was just too hot.

Howell at home as O-Tigers win
ONEONTA Welcome back to Oneonta, Mike Howell. Making his first start at Damaschke Field as a member of the Oneonta Tigers, Howell, who pitched two seasons for Oneonta State, got his first professional victory Wednesday as the O-Tigers rallied to beat the Lowell Spinners, 4-2.
Afton only as hard as you make it
David Dawson couldn't have known he was kicking dirt in the face of a beaten man on Monday. "It's definitely a player-friendly course," said Dawson, who has owned Afton Golf Club along with his brothers, Guy and Bob, for the last 16 years. "The greens are not tricked up and you can miss a fairway and still have a decent shot to the green.
Holes-in-one at Sundown, Meadow Links
Area resident David Dokuchitz hit a hole-in-one at Sundown Golf Course in Guilford on June 22. Dokuchitz aced the par-3, 196-yard 10th hole with a 5-wood. Witnesses were Chad Hall, Ray Selek and Cliff Peck.

Connolly signs with Detroit
Jon Connolly's American Legion baseball days are over. After pitching four innings of shutout ball on Tuesday, Connolly signed a professional contract with the Detroit Tigers, Oneonta Post 259 coach Mike Jester said. Connolly said late Tuesday night that he accepted a "counter-offer" from Detroit Tigers area scout Derrick Ross, who was at Sherburne-Earlville High to watch the left-hander pitch against Sherburne.

ONEONTA Attendance at Oneonta Tigers games already looks to be in midseason form. Official attendance at Sunday's home-opening double-header with Jamestown at Damaschke Field was 542 about 100 more than what the O-Tigers normally drew on a non-promotional night last season.

Tigers tame Jamestown
ONEONTA - Just a week into the New York-Penn League season, the Oneonta Tigers are already on the defensive. Highlighted by solid play in the field and another strong outing from starting pitcher Jeremy Johnson, the O-Tigers pulled out a 1-0 victory over Jamestown on Sunday in the first game of a double-header at Damaschke Field.
Bellinger returns to Yanks
Oneonta High graduate Clay Bellinger is back in the big leagues. Bellinger, who was sent down to Triple-A Columbus on May 22, rejoined the New York Yankees on June 15, the same day outfielder David Justice was placed on the 15-day disabled list, the Yankees media relations office confirmed on Sunday.

O-Tigers postponed, open at home on Saturday
Less than a week into the New York-Penn League season, the Oneonta Tigers have already gotten two days off. The O-Tigers' game at Williamsport on Friday was postponed because of rain. No make-up date was announced and the O-Tigers are not scheduled to return to Williamsport this season. The Crosscutters will play at Damaschke Field on Aug. 2-3 and 30-31.
No-hitters are really no big deal
Tradition has invested that phrase with a mystique totally disproportionate to its significance. But some people can't accept that. I've heard it said that Nolan Ryan must have been the greatest pitcher ever because he pitched seven no-hit games. No way.

Seeing the light in Texas
One of the pitfalls of traveling is that it's almost impossible to avoid reading USA TODAY. Normally, this is a publication I wouldn't allow my dog to do his business on, but with so many of the colorful, graph-filled papers floating around airports, it's tough to ignore.

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. Jeremy Johnson pitched eight solid innings to lead the Oneonta Tigers to a 7-5 season-opening victory over Williamsport at Bowman Field on Tuesday. The 18-year-old right-hander allowed four earned runs, walked one and struck out four.
WGA looks to beat new pro Thursday
Oneonta Country Club will put away its welcome mat for Joe Angelino on Thursday as the Women's Golf Association will play host to its annual Beat the Pro Day beginning at 8 a.m. The event will coincide with Babe Zaharias Day for the WGA.

Stamford, Oneonta legion sweep; four earn gold at ESG Sr. Games
Oneonta High senior Toni McDaniels had her best high jump of the year Saturday at the 2001 USATF National Junior Track and Field Championships in Richmond, Va. McDaniels, who won the Class B state championship earlier this month with a high jump of 5-feet, 7-inches, cleared 5-7 1/2 at Becker Stadium to place sixth and earn All-American status among a pool of high school and college athletes.

Post 259 improves to 9-2-1
Tim Greeley improved to 3-0 and Jon Connolly earned his first save of the American Legion baseball season as Oneonta Post 259 won 6-3 at Cortland Post 489 on Friday night. Greeley allowed seven hits, a walk and two earned runs in six innings. He also struck out six. Connolly struck out two of the three batters he faced to get the save.

O-State's softball coaches named top staff in northeast
Recently retired Oneonta State softball coach Don Flewelling and his staff were honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as the top Division III staff in the Northeast Region. Flewelling, who spent 35 years at O-State coaching men's basketball and softball, John Speranzi and Jesse Coughlin guided the Red Dragons to a 38-10 record, breaking the school record for victories in a season.
Hunting license fees expected to increase
Within a few weeks, hunting and fishing licenses for next season will go on sale. It's amazing that June is half over, and we are thinking of fall and hunting already. There are several proposed changes in the licenses that will affect us all.

Quinney's Warriors win two more
UNIONDALE - Ray Bourque wasn't the only man to go out a winner Saturday. Like the veteran Colorado Avalanche defenseman who's widely expected to retire after he won his first Stanley Cup Sidney track and field coach Doug Quinney had an equally triumphant sendoff in his last meet.

Wishes come true for Sidney's Hinsch
UNIONDALE - A genie must have visited Lindsay Hinsch this week. The evidence? The Sidney senior had three wishes granted Friday at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association track and field meet at Mitchel Field. Hinsch successfully defended her Class C-D championship in the long jump, captured the triple jump crown and helped the 400-meter relay team break a school and Susquenango Association record.
Stamford rallies to league title
Bob Kolka celebrated Senior Day all by himself on Friday. Kolka, the lone senior on the Stamford baseball team, homered and singled in the winning run at Archibald Field, giving the Indians a 12-11 victory over Jefferson in the Delaware League championship.
Evernham racing on a rocky Winston Cup road this season
I'm beginning to think car owner Ray Evernham wasn't sandbagging after all. Maybe his Dodge program, featuring Bill Elliott and Casey Atwood, isn't all that wonderful despite Elliott winning the pole for the season-opening Daytona 500.

Indians ready to dance
Three of the four dance contestants return, but it's the newcomer that has the attention of Afton junior Ashley Sherman. "The first thing that's important is the first game, because there's a chance there might not be a second game," Sherman said Tuesday after the Indians softball team defeated Hamilton, 6-4, to reach their seventh consecutive New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class D final four.
Pro turn worth the wait for Meyer
Ten minutes never felt so long for Scott Meyer. The recent Oneonta State graduate had expected to be selected in the Major League Baseball amateur draft, which was held Tuesday and Wednesday. But when the picks from the 50th and final round were announced Wednesday afternoon, his name was not among them.

Connolly earns his stripes
ONEONTA The Connollys are 2-for-2. The Detroit Tigers selected Oneonta High senior Jon Connolly, 17, in the 28th round of the Major League Baseball Draft on Wednesday with the 837th overall pick. His selection marked the second straight year an OHS player and a Connolly was chosen in the amateur draft.

Wednesday was quite a day for Jon Connolly. Hours after he was selected by the Detroit Tigers in Wednesday's Major League Baseball Draft, Connolly drove in two runs to help Oneonta Post 259 to a 10-9 victory over Unatego at Damaschke Field.
Margaretville ponuds Eagles, 25-4
Lindsey Smith doubled and had four RBIs to lead Margaretville to a 25-4 rout of Downsville in the Delaware League championship on Wednesday at the Delhi Legion Field.

Afton reruns at prime time
NIMMONSBURG For Afton's softball team, the sixth inning of Tuesday's state Class D quarterfinal had to feel like watching a favorite Seinfeld re-run. In eerily similar circumstances to Saturday's sixth-inning rally against Deposit in the Section Four title game, the Indians scored three times to erase a one-run deficit en route to a 6-4 victory over Hamilton at the BAGSAI Complex.

Richfield Springs jumped all over Hancock on Tuesday. A 12-run first inning led the Indians to the state baseball semifinals as they defeated Section Four champion Hancock, 15-4, in a Class D state quarterfinal on Tuesday at NYSEG Field in Binghamton.

BINGHAMTON Chris Brown's recovery is now complete. The Hancock senior pitched a two-hit shutout and struck out six Monday in leading the Wildcats past Jefferson, 7-0, in the Section Four Class D championship game at NYSEG Stadium. Not a bad performance for someone who was diagnosed with testicular cancer last December.

Bainbridge resident Aaron Robertson covered a lot of ground on Saturday. Robertson, 23, won the Delhi Covered Bridge 10-kilometer run in 35 minutes and 6 seconds, then completed an ensuing 13-mile bicycle time trial in 42:01 for a 14th-place finish.

After getting three strong innings of relief from ace pitcher Mike Cunningham, Zach Bulka capped a four-run comeback.

Credit Windham softball for providing Afton with a much-needed spark. After edging the Warriors in the Section Four Class D Tournament on Tuesday, Afton pounded out 12 hits in an 8-0 semifinal defeat of visiting Margaretville.

Flew completes flight with O-State
ONEONTA Don Flewelling is gettin' while the gettin's good. Two weeks after Oneonta State softball fell one victory shy of an NCAA Division III World Series berth, Flewelling has retired from his head coaching position, O-State sports information director Geoff Hassard said on Thursday.
