Tigers fall to Astros
The Pittsfield Astros scored three times in the eighth inning to erase a one-run deficit and defeat the visiting Oneonta Tigers, 5-3, Monday in New York-Penn League baseball. Jim Gonzalez's wild pitch allowed the go-ahead run to score as the Tigers dropped their second consecutive game.


Baseball players with Oneonta ties continue to excel
Oneonta native Clay Bellinger has returned to the New York Yankees for the fourth time this season. Bellinger, who has bounced between New York and Triple-A Columbus this season, was recalled Saturday and had a hit during the Yankees' 12-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.


Former U.S. star will be inducted
ONEONTA — Rick Davis, a former New York Cosmos and U.S. national team star, will be inducted to the National Soccer Hall of Fame on Oct. 8. Davis will become the 98th player at the official induction ceremony.

O-Tigers can't help themselves in 6-2 loss
ONEONTA — Though the Oneonta Tigers did little to help themselves Sunday night, they did provide the Batavia Muckdogs with plenty of assistance. Seeking their first three-game winning streak since the season's outset, the Tigers committed three defensive miscues — one mental and two physical — in a 6-2 New York-Penn League loss at Damaschke Field.


Bainbridge wrestler wins gold
Bainbridge resident Tyler Mumbulo won a gold medal in freestyle wrestling in the scholastic 98-pound division at the Empire State Games in Utica on Saturday.

ONEONTA — The Auburn Doubledays gave the Oneonta Tigers the slip Friday night. But for the O-Tigers, that was a good thing. Representing the potential tying run in the ninth, Auburn's Gabriel Arrieche fell down while rounding third on a hit.

The Oneonta Tigers blew a three-run lead on Thursday, then took a 4-3 New York-Penn League baseball loss to the Auburn Doubledays when reliever John Birtwell hit Mikael Jova with a pitch to force in the winning run in the 10th inning.


OHS senior pitches Central baseball to opening victory
Oneonta High senior Kyle Thomas threw a two-hitter in leading the Central Region scholastic baseball team to a 3-1 victory over New York City on Thursday at the Empire State Games. Thomas struck out nine and walked five in the complete-game victory.

Cee Jay makes it feel like the very first time
LAURENS — We looked like first-timers. And I'm not talking about the BUY.ROB Tour's initial visit to Cee Jay Golf Course, but our first time playing the game, period. Cee Jay, the fifth stop on the tour, measures only 5,113 yards, but it may as well have been Carnoustie last Wednesday.


O-Tigers rained out
Wednesday's New York-Penn League game between the Oneonta Tigers and host Mahoning Valley Scrappers was rained out. No new date has been scheduled, but the game will be part of a double-header later in the season. Oneonta plays a four-game series with the Scrappers at home Aug. 15-18, and a two-game series at Mahoning Valley Sept. 1-2.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum still has tickets available for two programs that will take place during Hall of Fame Weekend, Aug. 4-6.

Mike Edwards went 3-for-4 with three homers and 10 RBIs to lead the host Mahoning Valley Scrappers to a 19-6 rout of the Oneonta Tigers on Tuesday night. After Oneonta took a 1-0 lead with its first at-bats, the Tigers' fortunes quickly soured.


Area athletes set to compete at Empire State Games
Local sports stars will have a chance to shine in an Olympic-style environment this week at the Empire State Games. The Mohawk Valley region will play host to the Games, which begin with an opening ceremony at 7:30 p.m. today at Rome Free Academy.

ONEONTA — Don Kelly had a night at the plate that happens about as often as David Duval wins a golf major. The Oneonta Tigers second baseman went 5-for-5 and scored two runs Sunday to pace a 16-hit attack as the O-Tigers snapped a two-game losing streak to the Vermont Expos with a 6-1 victory at Damaschke Field.

ONEONTA — Ian Ostlund might be the bizzaro Parker Lewis. Unlike the TV character of the early 1990s who couldn't lose, the Oneonta Tigers pitcher can't seem to win. Despite a sharp performance in which he left after throwing six shutout innings Friday, Ostlund's relief and defense couldn't hold a two-run lead for him as the O-Tigers fell to the Vermont Expos, 4-2, at Damaschke Field.


Oneonta Post 259 clinches county title
Kyle Thomas threw a four-hitter and Mickey Erbe had three hits as Oneonta Post 259 clinched the Otsego County American Legion title with a 9-1 victory over Cooperstown on Friday at Doubleday Field. Thomas (6-2) needed 86 pitches in the victory. He struck out seven and walked one.


Points race provides drama, but not defending champ
As we head down the backstretch of the season, it's refreshing to see a pennant race taking shape, with Jeff Gordon and Dale Jarrett tied for the lead at the halfway point. Ricky Rudd is 18 points back in third.


Connollys are rare, but not the first
Oneonta High School graduate Jon Connolly recently signed a contract with the Detroit Tigers, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Mike, who signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization a year ago.

Don Kelly had three hits and Juan Francia and Chris Kolodzey each had two Wednesday as the Oneonta Tigers ended a two-game losing skid with a 5-3 New York-Penn League victory at Auburn. Kelly drove in two runs and Francia scored twice for the Tigers, who pounded out 11 hits.


Baseball Hall to welcome back 44
Forty-four of the 61 living National Baseball Hall of Fame members will be in Cooperstown for 2001 Induction Weekend. The induction ceremony, featuring the enshrinement of Bill Mazeroski, Kirby Puckett, Hilton Smith and Dave Winfield, will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 5 at the Clark Sports Center.

Jeremy Johnson suffered his first loss of the New York-Penn League season Monday as the Utica Blue Sox beat the visiting Oneonta Tigers, 5-1. Johnson (3-1) allowed four runs — all earned — seven hits and two walks in four innings. The O-Tigers had their two-game winning streak snapped.


Delancey's Newkerk wins junior golf championship
Delancey resident Jake Newkerk won the 18-hole A Flight division of the Delaware County Junior Championships on Monday at Delhi College Golf Course. Newkerk shot a 91, seven strokes better than runners-up Justin Mole and David Barnes. The A Flight consisted of golfers between the ages of 13 and 15.

NEW BERLIN — A world champion seeking to become a national champion earned a bittersweet victory on Sunday during the seventh round of the 23rd annual 125 cc AMA/Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross National Series at the Unadilla Valley Sports Center.


Carmichael wins again
NEW BERLIN — Ricky Carmichael became the winningest rider in the history of the U.S. outdoor motocross championships on Sunday, earning the overall victory in the seventh round of the 23rd annual 250 cc AMA/Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross National Series at the Unadilla Valley Sports Center.

Spisto leaps to Division I as assistant
Mike Spisto is making "The Leap." The Delhi Tech men's basketball coach left the school last week after two seasons at the helm to become an assistant coach at Rider University In the process, Spisto is going from an NJCAA Division III school to one that plays in Division I of the NCAA.


Nothing surprising about Earnhardt Jr.'s gift victory
There are a lot of folks out there who thought last week's Pepsi 400 at Daytona was rigged so Dale Earnhardt Jr. could win. What surprises me most about the hoopla is I think such on-track shenanigans go on all the time.

Oneonta Post 259 sent 15 batters to the plate during a 10-run third inning en route to a 19-6 American Legion baseball victory over Cooperstown on Tuesday at Oneonta High School. Mark Lossi tripled to start the inning and later scored on Mike Konstanty's two-run double.


Maybe it's just me, or ...
Isitmeor has been a friend of the family for a long time. Way back in the 80s, my father would come home from work, plop down in front of the TV and start a conversation with Isitmeor. "Isitmeor, has the price of gas gone up so much that people are trying to get better mileage by pushing their cars to work?"

Off day for O-Tigers
ONEONTA — The Oneonta Tigers have the day off today. But given the chance, they probably would have rather taken Monday off. Backed by seven strong innings from starting pitcher Brian Rodaway, the Pittsfield Astros belted out 13 hits en route to a 9-2 victory over the O-Tigers on Monday night at Damaschke Field.


Oneonta All-Stars win, 3-2
A.J. Herrmann drove in three runs to lead the Oneonta Little League All-Star A Team to a 3-2 victory over Vestal on Monday at Doc Knapp Field in Oneonta. Oneonta improved to 2-0 in the district portion of the Williamsport Tournament.

One small step for O-Tigers
ONEONTA — The Oneonta Tigers are a small-minded team. Sometimes it yields big results. Thanks to some timely hits, aggressive baserunning and steady pitching, the O-Tigers got past Pittsfield at Damaschke Field on Sunday, 7-3.


Oneonta Post 259 falls to Owego, 7-6
James Stewart's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave Owego a 7-6 legion baseball victory over Oneonta Post 259 in a Regional Division game of the World Youth Classic on Saturday.


Keyans sweep at Boilermaker
UTICA (AP) - Kenya runners John Korir and Catherine Ndereba won Sunday's 24th annual 15-kilometer Boilermaker Road Race.

The Oneonta All-Star A Team defeated Owego, 8-3 on Saturday, in a district opener of the Williamsport Little League Tournament at Homer.


O-Tigers shut out
The Oneonta Tigers were shut out for the first time this season, as three Utica Blue Sox pitchers combined on a five-hitter Saturday in the O-Tigers' 7-0 loss at Damaschke Field.

The school of hard knocks
ONEONTA — Need a clue as to how tough it is to hit in professional baseball? Check out Jason Knoedler's locker. Nestled among his uniform, cleats and other baseball necessities, the Oneonta Tigers outfielder has a collection of bats — six, in fact — all of which he's used at some point during the 2001 New York-Penn League season.


Yount leads O-Tigers to 10-2 victory
Andy Yount hit the Oneonta Tigers' first home run in more than two weeks and five players all had two hits Friday night in the O-Tigers' 10-2 victory at Utica. Yount's homer — the first of his career — was Oneonta's first since Jed Stringham did it on June 21 during the second game of a double-header at Williamsport.


Oneonta's Thomas a good egg
For most of the 2001 high school baseball season, pitcher Kyle Thomas laid a lot of eggs. Goose eggs, that is, as in zeros on the scoreboard and not allowing an earned run until the last inning of his last game of the season.

It may sound Petty, but the name of 'The King' is Richard Long before Richard Petty had been anointed "The King" by NASCAR fans and the writers of the day, someone tried to pin another name on the driver who has become synonymous with the No. 43 car and winning at Daytona International Speedway.

The stakes are high for a group of dedicated 12-year-olds this summer. At 2 p.m. on Saturday, the Oneonta All-Star Little League Baseball A Team plays opens play in the district portion of the Williamsport Tournament at Homer.

Five Afton softball players earn All-State
Afton softball has six more reasons to celebrate its Class D state championship season. Junior shortstop Kris Kelly and Cindy Bostelman earned Class D player and coach of the year honors, respectively, from the New York State Sportswriters & Coaches Organization for Girls Sports on Thursday. Four other Afton players took roster spots on the three-division Class D All-State Team.


Brief storm washes out O-Tigers vs. Jamestown
ONEONTA — Five minutes of rain ruined an entire evening of baseball at Damaschke Field on Thursday. A sudden — but ferocious — storm briefly blew through Oneonta, flooded the infield at Damaschke and forced the postponement of the Oneonta Tigers' game with the Jamestown Jammers.


Oneonta legion wins in 10 innings
Kyle Thomas drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th to score Erik Neander with the winning run Thursday as Oneonta Post 259 beat Endicott-Mahar, 8-7, in American Legion baseball play at Owego Free Academy.

U.S. forward to visit Soccer Hall
United States Men's National Team striker Josh Wolff, 23, will visit the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta for the first time on Saturday. Wolff, who plays forward for the U.S. National Team and Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire, is scheduled to greet fans in the Hall museum throughout the day.


Oneonta sluggish after rain delay, loses 8-3
ONEONTA — Second chances rarely come around in baseball. The only thing more rare might be a second half. Both happened Wednesday at Damaschke Field, but while the Oneonta Tigers couldn't capitalize on their comeback, the Jamestown Jammers made the most of an unexpected second half.


Woodhaven GC is challenging for the golf-challenged and beyond
I've never been one to follow etiquette rules closely, but last Thursday at Woodhaven Golf Club, I felt like Martha Stewart. Our Oneonta High correspondent had adding problems all afternoon while the other newcomer couldn't contain his temper.


American Legion baseball
Erik Neander's 3-for-4 effort at the plate, combined with a three-hitter by winning pitcher Kyle Thomas, led Oneonta Post 259 to an 8-0 American Legion baseball victory over Ithaca on Wednesday in a World Youth Classic Regional at Owego Free Academy.


O-Tigers fall in 11 innings
Tony Pena scored the winning run on an error in the bottom of the 11th inning Tuesday night as the Jamestown Jammers overcame a late rally by the Oneonta Tigers to win, 5-4.


'The Wall' looms large
ONEONTA — It's bound to happen. They might be facing it now. The question is when, not if, it will happen. Sometime this season, the Oneonta Tigers surely will hit `The Wall.'

COOPERSTOWN — At 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Friends of the Hall of Fame members will have the opportunity to view all the excitement of the All-Star Game at the Hall of Fame. The members-only evening will center on the live broadcast of the 2001 All-Star Game in the museum's 200-seat Grandstand Theater.

Bellinger back in the bigs with Yankees
NEW YORK - The yo-yo baseball season of Oneonta native Clay Bellinger continues. Two days after the OHS graduate was sent down to Triple-A Columbus, Bellinger was brought back up by the New York Yankees on Monday after outfielder-DH David Justice returned to the disabled list because of a tight left groin.


Howell leads O-Tigers past Jamestown
Mike Howell allowed three hits and no runs over seven innings to spark the Oneonta Tigers to a 2-1 victory at Jamestown on Monday night. Howell, who pitched two seasons for Oneonta State, struck out five and did not allow a walk as he improved to 2-0 in his third professional start.

Oneonta falls to Batavia
Batavia scored five times in the second inning Sunday and starting pitcher Mike Wilson shutout the Oneonta Tigers for seven innings of the Muckdogs' 10-2 New York-Penn League victory. The Muckdogs, who lead the Pinckney Division by a half-game over the Tigers, took three of four games in the series.


AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL
Oneonta Post 259 dropped two of three games over the weekend in an American Legion baseball tournament at Brockville, Ontario. Oneonta lost, 5-4, to Watertown Post 161 Saturday before beating Corning Red, 14-0, in its first game Sunday. Needing a victory to reach the title game, Oneonta lost, 4-0, against Messina.


Justice prevails over Bellinger
NEW YORK - The New York Yankees optioned Oneonta native Clay Bellinger to the Columbus Clippers of the Triple-A International League on Saturday.


Anderson successfully defends title at Delhi College Golf Course
Brad Anderson shot a 3-under-par 69 Sunday to defend his club championship at the Delhi College Golf Course. Anderson finished with a two-round total of 143 (1 under), four strokes ahead of runner-up Mike Batey.
