First big-game hunt was a memorable one
As you all know, I grew up in deer country. Finally, many years ago I went on my first big-game hunt. From that experience, I learned a couple very valuable things. First of all, check out your outfitter. Get some references and call each and every one of them. Even with that advice, you can sometimes go wrong. The other is that many outfitters think that all New Yorkers are from New York City.

Meaning of games starting to sink in
I realized Wednesday that with each moment of these games, athletes are stepping up and writing their own pages in Olympic history. I was witness to one of the biggest upsets of the when Belarus took on unbeaten Sweden in the first game of the men's hockey quarterfinals. In this case, I really had a bird's-eye view due to John Tormey's sore back. I filled in as a replacement cameraman for the game. Medals were given for cross country skiing, freestyle ski aerials, in which local hero Joe Pack pulled away a silver, and lastly, men's 1,500-meter speedskating, where Derek Parra of the U.S. broke a world record for the gold. The bright full moon in the January sky illuminated the entire hillside. There was no need for a spotlight. My Dad and I huddled against the old bar way leading into the pasture, where we shivered and waited patiently for a response to our call. From a copy of "Outdoor Life" I had ordered a set of predator calls. The Burnam Brothers foxcalls had cost only $2 back then.

Hurley nears 1,000/1,000 milestone
Tiffany Hurley, with two games this weekend, should become just the second Hartwick College basketball player to score 1,000 points and pull down 1,000 rebounds in a career.

Sidney thumps Bobcats
BAINBRIDGE — Bainbridge-Guilford's 22 first-quarter possessions against Sidney on Wednesday night consisted of a grab bag of ulcer-inducing miscues — seven turnovers, three airballs and four blocked shots. At the end of the period, Sidney led, 24-4, and was well on its way to a division title-clinching 64-47 Midstate Athletic Conference girls basketball victory that wasn't as close as the score indicates.

Oneonta clinches tie for division

'Wick water polo opens Friday
The first year of Hartwick College women's water polo involved winning championships and spending time in the national poll. After finishing 20-14 with a No. 18 ranking in the American Water Polo Coaches Association poll, expectations should be high for the Hawks and head coach Mike Maroney this year.

Sam Harnett's eight-footer with about 30 seconds left to play lifted host Cherry Valley-Springfield to a 50-49 boys basketball victory over Laurens in the Tri-Valley League on Tuesday. The Patriots (14-3 overall, 9-1 TV) won their 11th straight to clinch at least a tie for the Large School Division league title.

Sidney girls vs. B-G II tonight
Is Sidney's girls basketball team really 31 points better than Bainbridge-Guilford? At 7:30 tonight, the Warriors will have the chance to prove their 61-30 victory in the teams' first meeting was no fluke, when the Midstate Athletic Conference's best squads play at B-G.

Upset was greatest in Super Bowl history
NEW ORLEANS — New England coach Bill Belichick was quoted after Sunday's Super Bowl as saying if the Patriots and Rams played again next week, the oddmakers probably still would make St. Louis a 14-point favorite.

MAC wrestlers make statement
BAINBRIDGE — Watch out for the Midstate Athletic Conference. After a finals round that included frustration for the host school and victories for three talented Unatego wrestlers on Saturday, it appears as if the MAC will be well-represented at this winter's state meet.

H-T boys pad leads in DL, beat Indians
Bobby VanValkenburgh and Randy Ostrander combined for 39 points to lead visiting Hunter-Tannersville past Stamford, 75-51, for a key Delaware League victory Saturday. St. Louis should win, but Giant upset possible on Sunday
For those who tuned into this space at this time last year, you may remember my infamous Super Bowl XXXV column. Admittedly, it was a silly, irreverent and somewhat sophomoric look at my superstitious nature when it comes to the New York Giants. (I'll spare a recap, but "holding it in" was an oft-repeated theme.)

Devils' girls clinch
Jenna Bernhardt scored eight of her game-high 19 points in the pivotal first quarter of Margaretville's 60-48 girls basketball victory over visiting Davenport on Friday. The Blue Devils' victory clinched the Upper Delaware Division title of the Delaware League.

Big man on campus?
Kevin Reed earned the nickname "Ghost" last summer as a member of the Sullivan Rage, an Amateur Athletic Union boys basketball team. The reason? He was the lone white player on a talent-laden team stacked with downstaters. "They were always talking trash," said Reed, a 6-foot-6 senior on Downsville's 15-0 squad this winter. "They thought I couldn't play, but I'd show them up sometimes."

Recruiting a full-time job for college coaches
It's as thorough as Kevin Reed's domination in the Delaware League and infinitely more competitive than the vast majority of Downsville's games this season. Before Downsville senior Reed decides which college he'll attend next season, recruiters will have checked backgrounds, made visits and phone calls, watched film and attended games.

Edmeston wins second game of year
Allan Ruffles scored 20 points as host Edmeston won its second game of the year during its Senior Night on Friday. The Panthers improved to 2-15, 2-7 in the Tri-Valley League.

Rams will win in a shootout
This is the most statistically lopsided matchup in NFL title game history, dating to 1933. The Rams outgained their regular-season foes by an average of 138.7 yards per game (St. Louis averaged 418.1 yards offensively and yielded 279.4), which is the greatest margin for a team in the championship game in 52 years. Conversely, the Patriots were outgained an average of 29.4 yards a game in the regular season, the worst mark ever for a finalist.

Spy games, security concerns all part of Super Sunday
Patriots defensive back Je'Rod Cherry says he wouldn't be out of sorts if a Patriots playbook or some important code fell into the hands of the Rams. "We're not paranoid about anything," he said. "Why should we be? We don't have anything to hide." Apparently he's not on the same page as New England coach Bill Belichick, who at midweek was adamant that a pool reporter covering New England's practice not comment on what the quarterbacks were doing.

Going deep on home run leaders
When Barry Bonds hit 73 home runs for San Francisco last year, breaking Mark McGwire's three-year-old mark of 70, he became the eighth player to hold the single-season record. The others, in chronological order, were George Hall, Charley Jones, Harry Stovey, Ned Williamson, Babe Ruth and Roger Maris. Surprisingly (or maybe not), of these eight men only Ruth is in the Hall of Fame.

O-State men lose
Jon Guida scored 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Potsdam State over visiting Oneonta in a SUNY Athletic Conference game Friday.

Hartwick College roundup
Kerri Brown had 16 points and four assists to lead the Ithaca women's basketball team to a 69-60 victory over visiting Hartwick in Empire 8 Conference play Friday night.

The Big Easy is a bettin' man's paradise
NEW ORLEANS — Since you got this deep into the story, chances are you already have a wager on Sunday's game or plan to make one. At stake for you could be a bag of walnuts, or hundreds or thousands of dollars from an office pool. If not, for sure you have at least a slight interest in who wins. Gambling industry insiders say no other sporting event in North America captures the fans' attention more than the Super Bowl, which this week is celebrating its XXXVIth edition.

Organizations unite to help animals maintain their environment
As man encroaches on the habitat of wildlife, the results are usually detrimental to the animals. The rural farms are going out of business and land is being sub-divided. Houses are constructed where deer once lived. More and more, blacktop and concrete are being poured. Urban dwellers, having taken all they can stand, are moving to the country. Towns grow, and cities spread. Swamps are filled and trees are cut to accommodate shopping malls and convenience stores. Where does it all end? The result? Animals and wildlife suffer.

Poor weather wipes out local sports events
Old Man Winter put Thursday's area sports schedule on ice as all college and high school events were postponed because of harsh weather conditions. Five of the 13 events slated for Thursday have new dates while the other eight will be rescheduled later.
