Despite winning the top three singles matches, Delhi Tech's tennis team fell to visiting Broome Community College Thursday. It was the Broncos' first loss in more than a year.


O-State baseball loses home opener
Oneonta State baseball struggled to score in its home opener Friday and fell to Hamilton College, 3-1, at Red Dragon Field. The Red Dragons (4-8), who dropped their third straight, scored their only run of the non-conference game on a one-out single by Rob Bernstein in the bottom of the ninth.

Sidney's Mirabito finishes at top
Junior Angela Mirabito, who led Sidney to the Class C state title game, was named to the All-State girls basketball first team Tuesday. Mirabito was among seven players from The Daily Star's circulation area to receive All-State accolades, including Sidney teammate Paula Foote, who made the third team in Class C.


'Wick senior earns national honor
Hartwick senior men's lacrosse attacker Ethan Poole earned 360Lacrosse.com's Player of the Week for NCAA Division III on Tuesday. The honor marks the second straight national award for the Hawks as senior attacker Ross Pino received weekly accolades from InsideLacrosse.com last week.

Elmore excels in sprinting events for Delhi Tech
Marvin Elmore had first- and second-place finishes for Delhi Tech on Saturday in the Monmouth University Opener in track and field. Elmore won the 100 meters in 10.98 seconds and took second in the 200 in 22.15. The 200 time tied his school record set last May.

Rich Fink threw a 709 series Monday night to lead all Genny Light Classic bowlers at Holiday Lanes in Oneonta. Fink's set led Dante's Pizzeria to a 22-2 thumping of Losie's Gun Shop. Jim Sloan contributed a 680 series for Dante's.

Warriors are still in the running
All Sidney had to do was win the Class C state basketball title and everything would have been peachy.


Sidney already ready for 2002-03
From local businesses offering pizza parties to a number of flower deliveries to countless baskets of baked goods, Sidney's girls are discovering what they accomplished. "It's been tremendous," Sidney coach Loraine Butcher said of the community's reaction to the Warriors' 26-1 season. "I can't even begin to tell you all the places offering us pizza parties and all the flowers. It's been wonderful."

Hartwick College senior forward Tiffany Hurley was named to the D3hoops.com All-American team on Tuesday.

TROY — Angela Mirabito was her normal unstoppable self, Sarah Wesner couldn't miss and Sidney dominated early en route to a 61-47 victory Saturday over Section Nine's Tuxedo in a Class C state semifinal.


Best almost good enough
TROY — You can't teach 6-foot-3. When you're 5-10, it's almost impossible to guard 6-3. The one thing Sidney's girls could do nothing about ultimately led to their downfall Sunday in a 64-61 state Class C title game loss to Voorheesville.

DELHI — Caldwell CC fell into the deep end at Delhi Tech on Saturday. The Broncos' eight-man rotation wore down the Cobras and lifted Delhi to a 77-68 men's basketball victory in the fourth-place game of the NJCAA Division III Tournament before 885 fans at Farrell Hall Gymnasium.


DuPage stays in zone, wins NJCAA title
Delhi Tech's opening-round loss looks better and better. The College of DuPage (Ill.), the team that beat the Broncos in the opening round, rode their 1-3-1 zone defense all the way to the title Saturday.

Basketball purists must have found it a joy to watch Sidney's halfcourt offense last Saturday. It was about patience, decision-making, screening and movement. It was about turning down the open 15-footer in favor of a layup. It was about five individuals playing as one.

A glimpse at the lighter side of baseball
A friend of mine recently suggested that I write a column on some of the funny things that have happened in baseball. One problem with that is the most hilarious baseball anecdote I ever encountered is too bawdy for inclusion in a family newspaper. Also, some incidents are only funny in retrospect. I am sure the Brooklyn police — Brooklyn was still a separate city at the time — did not find the antics of Terry Larkin at all amusing, though they were certainly weird. So here goes.
