Cooperstown sophomore Nick Feinberg had one birdie to offset his lone bogey in shooting an even-par 35 on the front nine at Leatherstocking Golf Course on Monday.


Oneonta products' struggles continue
The early-season struggles have continued for three minor league players with Oneonta ties. Utility player Clay Bellinger and starting pitchers Mike Connolly and Michael Howell are off to slow starts.


Balanced Cobleskill wins conference title
Nate Dwyer shot a 77 and Unadilla Valley graduate Brett Seiler an 80 as Cobleskill won the Mountain Valley Conference championship Monday at the par-72 Kingswood Country Club.

Delhi senior Brian Neale helped take the Bulldogs from a very good football team to a state-championship team in three years as a starter. Neale will try to do the same at Ithaca College, where he said he'll play football this fall.


Raiders pitcher no-hits Laurens in rout
Gilbertsville-Mount Upton's Stacey Klingman no-hit Laurens on Friday, and her teammates made sure she had plenty of offense — five touchdowns and five extra points worth. Klingman (6-0) struck out six in five innings as the host Raiders blew out the Leopards, 35-1, in the Tri-Valley League.

Three sixth-inning runs Tuesday helped Oneonta State to its ninth straight softball season of 20 or more victories as the Red Dragons defeated visiting Union, 4-2, in the second game of a non-conference double-header.

Oneonta's Austin set to transfer
Oneonta graduate Mike Austin is coming home to play soccer — sort of. Austin is transferring from West Virginia to Binghamton University and will join the Bearcats in the fall, the school located about 60 miles southwest of Oneonta recently announced.


E8 honors King, Colite
Hartwick softball player Amy King and men's lacrosse player Mark Colite were each honored by the Empire 8 Conference on Monday. King was named Co-Player of the Week in the conference for softball, and Colite was the E8 Co-Goaltender of the Week.


Weekend College Roundup
Matt Puerta had two goals and three assists as the Red Dragons defeated SUNYAC host Potsdam on Saturday. Dan Bakke added three goals for O-State (10-2, 5-1 SUNYAC).


Puerta, Moxley earn awards
Lacrosse player Matt Puerta and softball player Sandy Moxley were named Oneonta State's athletes of the week Monday. Puerta, who was also named the SUNYAC Player of the Week, had six goals and nine assists in his team's two victories last week.

Ryan Maloney had four goals and one assist and Bill Luzzi set the single-season record for groundballs as the Hartwick College men's lacrosse team defeated Ithaca College, 12-10, in Empire 8 Conference play on Saturday at All-Weather Field.


OHS long jumper fare well
If nothing else, Oneonta High boys track Dave Forbes discovered he has an impressive trio of long jumpers Saturday at the first Oneonta Invitational. Adam Remillard, Geoff Bean and Jim Hurtubise took the top three spots for the Yellowjackets in the seven-team, non-scoring meet.


Delhi men win fourth straight at Hartwick
Delhi Tech's men won the Hartwick Invitational for the fourth consecutive year, scoring 152 points Saturday to easily outdistance the host school, which had 113 1/2.


Stingy Red Dragons extend winning streak to five
Oneonta State's softball team did not allow a run during a double-header sweep of visiting Skidmore on Sunday. The Red Dragons won by scores of 4-0 and 8-0. O-State (19-7-1) has a five-game wininng streak. Skidmore is 8-18.

The Cobleskill baseball team was swept by visiting Jefferson in a double-header Thursday. Jefferson's Tom Shopp threw a one-hitter in the first game in a 10-0 shutout. In the second game, Jefferson won, 14-3.

OHS baseball falls to Norwich
Mike Konstanty's two-hitter wasn't enough Monday. Despite a strong pitching performance by Konstanty that included nine strikeouts and one walk, the Oneonta baseball team suffered its first loss of the season, 2-1, at Southern Tier Athletic Conference foe Norwich.


Oneonta products starting slowly
Oneonta High graduates Clay Bellinger and Mike Connolly are off to shaky starts in the minor leagues this season. Bellinger, 33, was sent down to Triple-A Salt Lake City on April 9 after appearing in two games with the Anaheim Angels.


Area Bowling
ISD swept Dante's Pizzeria Wednesday night in the ISD Classic. Wayne Balnis had a 707 series and Gus Lampo bowled a 666 set to lead ISD. Jim Delello shot a 647 in the losing effort. Dante's remains in first place by one point.

Hartwick wins ECAC tournament
The Hartwick College women's water polo team won its second tournament in April on Sunday. Hartwick received four goals from Sheri Johnson and a solid game in goal from Audrey Lohse to win, 6-5, over Brown in the championship game of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament at Harvard.


Two Delhi Tech track records broken at West Point
Two Delhi Tech school records fell Saturday in the Dick Shea Invitational at West Point. Kelli O'Brien smashed her school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and Steve Teeter broke the Broncos' record in the 800.

Seven consecutive hits led to a six-run third inning Friday as Oneonta won a slugfest with visiting Owego, 15-8, to open its Southern Tier Athletic Conference baseball schedule.

Clay hits it big
Oneonta High graduate Clay Bellinger is back in the big leagues. Bellinger, one of the Anaheim Angels' final cuts in spring training, was recalled Friday when the Angels placed first baseman Benji Gil on the 15-day disabled list.

Even in arctic-like conditions, two of the premier track programs in Section Four put on quite a display Thursday at Oneonta High.


Storm softball wins first in school history
Unadilla Valley's softball skid finally came to a stop Thursday. Jamie Parks' RBI single with one out in the bottom of the seventh lifted the Storm to their first victory since the merger of New Berlin and South New Berlin created Unadilla Valley Central in 1996.


Reservoir fishing may never be the same in NYC
Long shadows were cast by the tall, concrete pillars. In dark areas created by the gray span overhead, we drifted sawbellies in the deep, cold water. Our small, fiberglass rowboat was steadied by ropes hanging from the bridge. In the depths of the reservoir, huge brown trout lurked, waiting to feed.

Morris girls clip Unatego
Jen Bogert went 3-for-4 as host Morris edged Unatego, 10-7, in a non-league softball opener Monday. Morris (1-0) pulled away with a five-run fourth inning. Megan Olsen surrendered six hits and struck out five in a complete-game victory.

Triple Clay: Bellinger sent down
Oneonta High graduate Clay Bellinger is no stranger to Triple-A baseball and that's where he'll start the 2002 season. Bellinger's attempt to make the Anaheim Angels' opening-night roster ended Saturday, when he was assigned to the team's Triple-A affiliate in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Ryan Short scored four goals and had four assists and Steve Cottiers had four goals and two assists in Delhi Tech's victory at SUNY-Morrisville on Saturday.


'Wick men improve to 5-0
The Hartwick College men's lacrosse team opened its Empire 8 Conference schedule with a 14-10 victory over Alfred University on Saturday at Merrill Field. Hartwick, which is ranked eighth by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA), improved to 5-0 and 1-0 in conference.
