BINGHAMTON — It wasn't particularly overwhelming, but it was dominating. Oneonta High senior Kevin Sobers did his best Greg Maddux imitation Wednesday, pitching a four-hitter against top-seeded Corning in leading the Yellowjackets to a 1-0 Section Four Class B semifinal victory at Conlon Field.

Dragons pitcher stymies Gilboa
Schenevus pitcher Anthony Carimando was close to untouchable against Gilboa on Tuesday. When Carimando wasn't striking out Wildcats players (he finished with 20), he was walking them (he had seven).


O-State honors Heslin
Senior center fielder Brendan Heslin became the first Oneonta State player selected as a first team NCAA Division III ABCA/Rawlings All-American. Heslin hit .448 and led the Red Dragons in every offensive category.

Oneonta High's Section Four Class B baseball semifinal against Corning East was pushed back a day because of rain. The fifth-seeded Yellowjackets (13-6) and top-seeded Trojans (15-8) play at 4:30 today at Conlon Field in Binghamton.

Girls of steal: Morris defeats G-MU, 4-3
Morris stole one from Gilbertsville-Mount Upton on Tuesday. The fourth-seeded Mustangs scored the winning run on a double steal in the sixth inning and went on to a 4-3 victory over No. 5 G-MU in a Section Four Class D softball quarterfinal.

WINDSOR — Oneonta High baseball coach Joe Hughes had seen the script play out way too many times, and the ending was always painful.


Unatego has a grand old time
It will be tough for Tyler DeMulder to top this one. DeMulder capped a 2-for-4 performance Friday with a two-out grand slam in the top of the seventh, leading Unatego to a sectional baseball upset of host Groton, 6-2.


It's hard to buy Stewart's story
It was last year at about this time that I accused Tony Stewart of fibbing in a major way. He had promised his No. 20 Home Depot Winston Cup team a year earlier that he wouldn't be performing the Indy 500/Charlotte 600 double again any time soon. Of course, he wound up running both in 2001.


Jefferson takes charge in Class D

Afton girls experience MAC title
AFTON — The Afton trio of Kris Kelly, Brigitte Hansen and Ashley Sherman has a combined 17 years of varsity softball experience. All that knowledge, talent and competitiveness was on display Wednesday as the Indians defeated Sherburne-Earlville, 10-0, in the first Midstate Athletic Conference title game.


G-MU speeds past Morris in T-V
LAURENS — Shelly Miles brakes for nothing. Senior catcher Miles went 4-for-4 and completed two unassisted trips around the bases Wednesday as Gilbertsville-Mount Upton dethroned Morris in the Tri-Valley League softball championship, 13-9.


Nine-run fourth lifts Margaretville
Margaretville needed one big inning to clinch its second straight Delaware League softball title Wednesday. The Blue Devils touched Downsville ace Lindsey Hollenbaugh for nine runs in the fourth inning and went on for a 9-3 victory at Prattsville.


Two from Cooperstown win singles titles
Reid Snyder and Finn Dusenbery won singles titles as Cooperstown won the Section Three C-1 Championships on Thursday at Cortland.

Three softball champs to be crowned today
Afton's softball program, the reigning Class D state champion, has won seven consecutive Section Four Class D titles. The Indians have also advanced to at least the state semifinals in each of the last seven years.

Sidney's Caitlin Graham and Cherry Valley-Springfield's Kristen Karhio went head-to-head in the pentathlon for the first time Monday at the Section Four Class C meet at Binghamton.


S-E advances to play Sidney in MAC tiebreaker
Four Unatego errors helped Sherburne-Earlville to four runs in the fourth inning as the Spartans fell, 7-2, Monday in a Midstate Athletic Conference Division I softball tiebreaker at Greene.


Dragons too much for CV-S
ONEONTA — Everything fell into place Monday for Schenevus. Anthony Carimando's 10-strikeout performance in his first complete game this season led the Dragons to a 13-3 victory over Cherry Valley-Springfield in the Tri-Valley League Championship.


Cooperstown earns share of division
Cooperstown baseball finished as division co-champions Monday with a 14-3 victory over visiting Mount Markham at Doubleday Field.

Schenevus looking for Tri-Valley baseball repeat today
Schenevus baseball will be seeing Dubben today. Coming off its first division title in 20 seasons, Cherry Valley-Springfield is expected to use freshman pitcher Scott Dubben as much as possible when it plays Schenevus for the Tri-Valley League baseball championship at 5 p.m. today at Oneonta State.


Hail to the Redskins: Cooperstown sweeps
It was a first-place sweep for Cooperstown at Saturday's Center State Conference Division II Championship at Mohawk. The Redskins won the boys and girls titles. Led by a school record four first-place finishes by Mike Senchyshyn, the boys finished with 183 points for its first league title since 1996.


Unatego softball begins MAC playoffs today vs. S-E
Unatego and Sherburne-Earlville will play at 4:30 today at Greene in the first portion of the Midstate Athletic Conference Division I softball tiebreaker. The winner will play Sidney at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to determine the division champion. If S-E wins, the game will be at Greene. If the Spartans prevail, the site will be determined.


OHS duo wins title
Ben Kabat and Brian Rothermel won the Section Four Class B doubles title Saturday to lead Oneonta High to a first-place finish at the Binghamton Tennis Center.

OHS fortunes to ride on Forbes' 400
There are 400 reasons why Oneonta High's boys track team has a good chance of winning the Southern Tier Athletic Conference title at Union-Endicott. They are 400-meter runners Geoff Bean, Adam Remillard, Nick Catella, Casey Kolokithias and Erik Johnson, who helped OHS win the Susquenango Association title last season.


Sidney's Graham will look to continue run of accomplishments at Monmouth
Success seems to follow Sidney senior Caitlin Graham. From the top scorer in the Midstate Athletic Conference during soccer season to a determined defender on the 26-1 basketball team to a versatile standout on the perennial strong indoor and outdoor track and field teams, Graham has excelled. So it should come as little surprise Graham selected Division I Monmouth University to pursue her academic and track and field exploits.


Intorcia selected for all-star game
Oneonta State's Pam Intorcia was selected to play in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association North-South All-Star game on June 8 at Loyola College in Baltimore. Intorcia, a senior, was also selected to the IWLCA regional All-America second team.


'Wick's Thomson named top player in Northern Division
Hartwick College senior Megan Thomson was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division Player of the Year for the second year in a row.


Wells' 3 hits lead Morris over Laurens

ONEONTA — A series of odd circumstances led to Johnson City's 10-8 baseball victory in eight innings over Oneonta High on Friday. The Wildcats' emotional victory, which all but assured JC of the Southern Tier Athletic Conference Central Division title, was improbable for several reasons:

Senior Jed Musch struck out 10 in leading Oswego to a 3-1 upset over Oneonta State Friday in the opening round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament at Red Dragon Field.


Derry leads Stamford in 14-2 rout
Shane Derry struck out nine in six innings to lead host Stamford past Gilboa, 14-2, in a Delaware League baseball game Friday.


Morris softball gets jump on Milford
Morris softball is interfering with Milford's plans to take over the Small School Division of the Tri-Valley League this spring. The defending division and league champion Mustangs earned a 6-5 victory over visiting Milford on Friday as the game ended on an interference call at first base.

Justin Wood led Walton's boys to a meet-record 166 points and Kristen Karhio led Cherry Valley-Springfield to the girls title Friday in the Downsville Invitational at Hartwick College. Wood set meet records in the 400 meters and the 400 hurdles. He won the 400 in 52.4 seconds and the 400 hurdles in 59.8. Wood also won the 800.

In 1991, for at least the fourth time in less than 11 years, the rules governing the Baseball Hall of Fame's Veterans Committee were changed.


'Old man' Marlin emerging as consistent force at age 44
There's not a lot of "aw shucks" in Sterling Marlin, a Winston Cup also-ran from 1997-2000 before finding enormous success driving for car owner Chip Ganassi the past year and a half. Marlin, 44, who finished third in the drivers' standings last year, leads by 132 points this year in his No. 40 Coors Light Dodge and doesn't want anyone to think it's a fluke.
