Fletcher picks up offense as Walton perfects winning ways
2002 high school football
WINDSOR — The rich got richer — and more disciplined. Junior Kirk Fletcher's ankle finally allowed him to have an impact on offense, and unbeaten Walton did not commit a penalty nor a turnover in the first half of its 32-0 victory Saturday. Fletcher, who had rushed for 18 yards in Walton's first three games, carried 18 times for 133 yards and two touchdowns. He also led a Walton defense that limited the Black Knights to 100 yards of offense.

OHS foiled again
ONEONTA — Travis Sohns turned a potential blunder into a third-quarter touchdown, giving Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton the spark it needed. Sohns' 60-yard punt return and Pat Zieno's extra point gave Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton the lead, and the Bears went on to defeat Oneonta, 14-6, under a steady rain Friday.

Sidney football ends Unatego's streak
Fourth-quarter touchdown runs by Toby Umbra and Eddie Gazzetti helped Sidney end Unatego's 11-game winning streak with a 14-6 victory Friday in Bainbridge.

MAC girls soccer up in the air
Here's how unpredictable Midstate Athletic Conference girls soccer has been this season: Defending champion Unatego lost to Unadilla Valley, which lost to Delhi. The Bulldogs lost to Bainbridge-Guilford, which lost to Sidney. Unatego defeated Sidney, but Sidney beat Unadilla Valley (the team that beat Unatego). So what does it all mean? Basically, there are a lot of good teams in the league, which should make for a tight race for the top overall record.

The Smart Money
Phew! Did the Jets play a stinkeroo last week or what? I had to burn the clothes I was wearing when I picked them to smear the Dolphins. And, just so you know that I take these fake bets seriously, I tossed and turned all night Sunday and didn't get a good rest. And my back hurts.

Hornsby still gets the edge over Williams
A few weeks ago, a man named Stephen Harvester took issue with me on a few things I had written earlier in the summer. In regards to my column on the late Ted Williams, he disagreed with my contention that Rogers Hornsby was a better hitter than Williams. That is, of course, his prerogative; my relatives have served in at least six of America's wars to preserve his right to disagree.

Snatch a salmon as soon as possible
The first time I journeyed to Pulaski, salmon fishing was in its infancy. The streams were crowded shoulder-to-shoulder, sometimes three-deep, waiting to attack the upstream rush of migrating salmon. It was somewhat like a modified gang war. The only rule was having a hook, line and pole.

Sidney strikes early

Stickle lifts Downsville boys again
Downsville boys soccer is for real, and that's causing a mess atop the division standings in the Delaware League. One day after knocking Margaretville from the top rung of the Upper Delaware with a tie, Downsville put the Blue Devils back in control of the division Thursday with a 2-1 victory over Windham. Downsville's Devin Stickle scored the final goal for the second consecutive game, this time converting the winner off a cross from Jon Accardi with 11 minutes, 33 seconds to play.

Weekend features key soccer games
Oneonta State's soccer programs highlight the Red Dragons' sports weekend as the men open play in the Atlantic Soccer Conference and the women look to extend a streak that's challenging the nation's longest in NCAA Division III play. O-State's men (3-4) play host to Philadelphia University at 1 p.m. Saturday. Since there is no conference tournament, each ASC game is critical as the regular-season champion earns an NCAA Division I Tournament berth.

Schenevus outmuscles G-MU
GILBERTSVILLE — There's a certain feistiness about the Schenevus girls soccer team that always seems to give Gilbertsville-Mount Upton troubles. It was on display again Wednesday, as the visiting Dragons handed the Raiders their first Tri-Valley League loss of the season, 3-2. "They play really physical and usually we don't deal very well with that," said G-MU junior Jessica Talbot, who scored her 19th goal of the season in the first half.

Good to the last second
Margaretville and Downsville beat the clock Wednesday, but neither could find the time for a winning goal in a 4-4 Delaware League boys soccer tie. Not so fast: Colonial CC in Tannersville has its ups and downs
TANNERSVILLE — "If you hit the ball right, you'll love it," said the Colonial Country Club employee as he pointed us to the first tee Monday. At least he was accurate. There was danger every time I looked left, which I did an awful lot Monday. Personally, I hated the nine-hole course, but the BUY.ROB Tour found it to be a neat little layout.

DL's elite fit to be tied
STAMFORD — There are good ties and bad ties. Tuesday's 1-1 draw between the Margaretville and Stamford girls probably qualifies as a good one for both teams. Margaretville, the state's top-ranked team in Class D, came from behind to tie it with 10 minutes, 44 seconds left and remained undefeated.

Hunters are migrating to home geese
The cold, wet fog hung heavy among the willows. It clung to the ground and blocked any possible view of the fields before us. My son Randy and I waited one early morning last weekend for the geese to come into our decoys. We could hear small flocks honking away overhead, but visibility was limited to about three feet along the Unadilla River.

OHS loses tough one
ONEONTA — Somewhere between head-shaking disbelief and utter frustration seemed to be the feeling among Oneonta girls soccer players following Thursday's game. The previously unbeaten Yellowjackets fell in overtime, 2-0, to undefeated Seton Catholic Central in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference game at the Wright National Soccer Campus. "I'm so mad," midfielder Meghan Stetson said. "I had no doubt at any point in the game that we were going to win, except when they started counting down the final 10 seconds."

Delhi won both doubles matches en route to a Midstate Athletic Conference victory over Sidney (2-2) on Thursday.

Early season losses fuel Sidney boys soccer run in MAC
It's not as if Sidney coach Steve Hornung wanted his team to start 0-2, but he didn't seem to mind. The Warriors opened with losses against two quality opponents, Laurens and Chenango Valley, in the Minekill Tournament. Sidney lost by a combined 7-3 score, but Hornung said it was all part of a plan. "I wanted to start the season against a couple of tough opponents before our league schedule started," he said. COOPERSTOWN — Time of possession isn't usually associated with soccer, but the Cooperstown girls made sure it was Wednesday. The Redskins put on a passing clinic en route to a 2-1 Center State Conference victory over Westmoreland. "We dominated," first-year Cooperstown coach Jennifer Pindar said. "We've been working on our passing game. And obviously, our defense is really strong. We're just a strong team all-around."

Rams take Round One
MARGARETVILLE — South Kortright won its only scheduled meeting with Margaretville on Monday, 4-2, but it would not be a surprise if the teams crossed paths again. The Delaware League Championship? Most likely. The Section Four Class D final? Perhaps. "South Kortright wanted it a little bit more today," said Margaretville coach Pete Palen, whose team suffered its first loss of the season. "But we're hoping to see them again down the line."

Delaware League shaping up as two-horse race
The two boys soccer thoroughbreds expected to run away with division titles in the Delaware League this season are Margaretville and South Kortright. Still, the Blue Devils and the Rams would be wise to keep a blinder open for the longshots. "It's going to be fairly competitive," said Jefferson coach Rick Cammer, whose team is off to a 3-4 start in 2002. "South Kortright and Margaretville are probably the frontrunners. ONEONTA — Imagine the impact a victory would have had on Milford's boys soccer team Sunday. Walton football airs it out for 40-6 victory
ENDICOTT — Air Hoover? Well, it's not quite to that point, but opponents had better start respecting Walton's ability to throw the football. Chad Jackson threw three first-half touchdown passes and the Warriors' defense limited Lansing to 69 yards rushing in a 40-6 victory Friday night at Union-Endicott's Ty Cobb Stadium. "They were putting eight men up there and really coming hard," Walton coach Jim Hoover said of the Bobcats.

Chargers defense will be one to watch
What a first week of football. We saw little Travis Henry bowl for three scores amidst the Jets' kickoff returns. We witnessed Shane Matthews, who has yet to accomplish anything in his nine-year career, soar for 327 yards and three touchdowns (albeit, into the beaks of the mighty Cardinals) in the new favorite scheme of everyone around D.C.

The Smart Money
Last week: +$20 Season total: $520 One of the most stunning developments in the aftermath of the Bengals' preposterously one-sided loss to the Chargers wasn't the fact that ambulances weren't double-parked outside the team locker room waiting for coach Dick LeBeau to conclude his postgame commentary. But I was flabbergasted to learn that the Bengals have an offensive coordinator.

OHS boys: Divided they fall
ONEONTA — The Oneonta boys soccer team was shut out for the first time in a long time Thursday, and that was only one of their problems. Defensive lapses and bickering cost the Yellowjackets in a 3-0 Southern Tier Athletic Conference loss to Maine-Endwell at the Wright National Soccer Campus. "I think that's the first time I've been shut out in four years," said Oneonta coach Alex Brannan, whose team fell to 1-2-1.

It's still early for 'Jackets
Oneonta boys soccer coach Alex Brannan isn't easily discouraged. He has 17 players on the roster, one of the lowest numbers in his 16 years, but he'll make do. The Yellowjackets must overcome the graduation of Daily Star Player of the Year Matt Shea, but Brannan has seen countless impact players pass through the program. And so what if OHS started the season a pedestrian 1-2-1? It's early.

Tigers stuffed by S.I. in final

Finding right outfitter can be a bear of a task
A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned an invitation to go bear hunting in Maine. Boy, am I glad I didn't go. Over the last 20 years or so, I have hunted black bears in Maine, New Brunswick and Ontario, as well as the Adirondacks. Only a few of those trips were successful. The reason for failure was usually the result of the outfitters.

Trade desk, waiver wire can offset a bad draft
First, I must admit I am no fantasy sports expert. I don't pore over the various player guides that are more plentiful than college students on Water Street at 2 a.m. I don't spend hours scouring the Internet for injury reports nor the one tip that will let me know if the Bengals (Chad Johnson) or the Bears (Marcus Robinson) have the better No. 3 receiver.

Boston added insult to injury by making him manager.
