One final cheer for three splendid Hall of Fame veterans
Talkin' baseball column
The National Baseball Hall of Fame was rocked this summer by the deaths of three long-time members Ted Williams, Enos Slaughter and Hoyt Wilhelm; the listing is chronological by date of death. These were not, even by Hall of Fame standards, run-of-the-mill players. Williams, as is well known, was the last player to hit .400 in a season with enough at-bats to qualify for the batting championship.
Priest is playing for fantasy keeps
Fantasy island fantasy football column
Wow. That's about all I have to offer Priest Holmes at this point. One week ago, as he prepared to face Denver's top-rated run defense, I wrote: Holmes may be kept under 100 total yards for the first time this season and held scoreless for just the second. (Though, I did suggest he stay in your lineup.)
The smart money

Missing: Sweet taste of victory
The inside track auto racing column
I remain with a bitter taste in my mouth after attempting to forecast the Winston Cup championship race during the spring (Dale Jarrett) and early in the summer when I selected the front-runner (Sterling Marlin). I figured the odds were in my favor picking a guy already in first place, but I learned differently in a hurry.

This river didn't float our boat
Outdoors column
I've been drawn to the great north wood for much of my life. The Adirondack Mountains have a mystical attraction that reaches down deep into my soul. Mile after mile of unbroken forests, rocky ledges and dark cedar swamps hold big whitetails and ghostly bears. It is a place to escape the multitude of other hunters, because once a mile from any road or highway, you are alone in a nearly undisturbed land.

However, the Jackets' 30-26 Section Four Football Conference Division III victory over Chenango Valley (1-6) on a chilly Friday evening at Binghamton's Alumni Stadium was hardly convincing and they lost two key starters to injuries.

World Series has been popular place for comebacks over the years
Talkin' baseball column
In a recent conversation to which I was a party, the topic of baseball comebacks came up, and it was suggested that I do a column on the subject. The problem with that is that the subject has too many ramifications to be handled that way. There is a form of poetry known as `tema con variazioni,' which translates to `theme with variations.' And I can think of at least four variations on the theme of comebacks in baseball, and could probably do a column on each one. Maybe I will, but not in consecutive weeks; there's too much other stuff to write about.
Exam time for many of league's best
Fantasy island column
Do you hear that? Chalk scampering across blackboards, textbooks slamming shut at the end of late-night sessions it sounds like studying. All around the league, players and coaches had better be reviewing their tapes, notes and live plays from dawn to dusk and then checking them again because this weekend presents a myriad of tests.
The Smart Money
Last week: $-80 This week's total: $430 Before you folks start making derisive remarks about my off-target forecasts, let's take a trip in the way-back machine to midseason last year. In the newspaper archives I dug up a late-October edition, and it turns out I was down to $440 in the bankroll. I guess that's why I didn't save that particular news clip.

High point not quite here for bow season
Outdoors column
As the sun began to settle in the west, I found myself in a treestand along the edge of the woods. Some pre-season scouting assured me this would be a good place to spend the evening of opening day. I never get excited about hunting in the early days of bow season. I find it more exciting, as we get closer to the rut. The bucks are more active, and by rattling some antlers and using a grunt call, deer often come right to my stand.

BUY.ROB Tour goes on in style on harsh day at Otsego Golf Club
Out of bounds
SPRINGFIELD CENTER It's over! And the beautiful thing is that the final event in BUY.ROB Tour history unfolded so perfectly. 2002 high school girls soccer
GILBERTSVILLE The Gilbertsville-Mount Upton girls are a lot like other soccer teams in that they complain to each other about their coach sometimes. The Raiders are a bit different, though, because their best player junior midfielder Jessica Talbot is the coach's daughter.
Walton rushes to victory
2002 high school football
SIDNEY Mistake-prone Walton showed Friday night that it is still the class of Division V. Sidney showed that it is no longer content with its also-ran status in the same division. Big-play threats Bryan Malia and James Armstrong each broke long touchdown runs and Walton benefited from a costly Sidney penalty in the second quarter for a 22-0 victory on a damp and rainy night.

History proves silliness of rule
Baseball column
Early in September, a local resident named Travisano wrote a letter taking issue with my long-standing position vis-a-vis the Baseball Hall of Fame's 10-season rule, which he claims I "mention in virtually every column." That is a considerable exaggeration; I doubt I mention it, on the average, more than once in six weeks, and only if it's germane to the topic of the column.
The smart money
I've been watching the line all week and can't figure out what's going on in many cases. I felt much the same during the conference championships last season when the Steelers and Rams were colossal favorites and neither came close to covering. For starters, down in Houston, the odds have dropped a significant full point as bettors have flocked to back the Texans in their game against Buffalo.

Ashley Payne had a goal and an assist as the visiting Yellowjackets downed Owego, 2-0. "This was maybe our worst game of the year," Oneonta coach Helen Sandford said. "Nothing worked. We had a collective bad day. We weren't a unit by any means."

Bow season is exciting time of year
Outdoors column
The clock is going at an accelerated pace, as the days quickly pass. Bow hunting is just around the corner. Bow hunting is a wonderful time of the year. It starts early in the fall, giving us an extra month to be in the woods. The weather is usually warm, and the big bucks are still around. Bow hunters can sit in a tree stand and watch nature at its best. Deer aren't running back and forth, trying to escape every hunter in the woods that is shooting at them.
Owego slows Jackets
ONEONTA There's no substitute for speed. The Oneonta High boys soccer team found that out Thursday night as Owego's fleet-footed forwards scored in rapid-fire fashion midway through the second half. Tour rookie far from pure Funk, but wins major at En-Joie
Out of bounds area golf course review
ENDICOTT Three years ago, I watched Fred Funk shoot a 61 on a course that played much tougher than the one we played Wednesday. Funk made 11 birdies and no bogeys that day, in the second round of the B.C. Open. Of course, that came during an event on our sister tour and did not carry the pressure of a major championship.

She is one of six former athletes headed to the Hartwick Athletic Hall of Fame at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Dragons streak to victory
2002 college women's soccer
ONEONTA It seems like every game the Oneonta State women's soccer team plays involves streaks. One ended and another continued in Tuesday's 3-2 overtime defeat of non-conference foe Hartwick. The Red Dragons' run of eight consecutive shutouts was halted, but they won their 12th straight. O-State (13-1, 7-0 conference) goes for its 44th straight SUNYAC victory Friday against rival Cortland.
Cook & Colgate a perfect match
2002 college men's soccer
ONEONTA Laurens graduate Jon Cook is the hyena of the Colgate men's soccer team, save the annoying laugh. He blends in with enemy defenses despite distinct maroon and white markings, which are clearly that of a Raider. His slow, methodical trot often changes directions, in sync with the movements of the prize. For much of the game, sophomore forward Cook is harmless, apparently content with tracking a soccer ball.

Defenders don't get their due credit
Soccer column
Soccer defenders are a lot like offensive linemen in football a lot of times, you don't hear about them unless they screw up. Forwards and midfielders are typically the ones scoring the goals and filling the box scores. Goalies earn credit for the shutouts and have their saves counted.

Carolina defense an early surprise
Football column by Matt Schauf
Surprised San Diego is the lone 4-0 team in the NFL? Well, while I'm proud to say I'm one of the few who isn't, most people are. Now that the Bolts have knocked off their first real opponent a home victory over New England followed triumphs at the expense of the Bengals, Texans and Cardinals folks seem to be close to calling them a contender.
Sheffield should get NL MVP nod for leading Atlanta
Talkin' baseball column by Jim Hamilton
It is time, once again, for my annual awards column. First, however, as Casey Stengel once said, "When I make a mistake, it's a beaut." And the one I made in my column of Sept. 7 was a real doozy. What I said was that when the Yankees won the 1923 World Series, they had 11 players on their roster who had previously been with the Boston Red Sox. That was true, but I only listed 10, and the one I omitted was the biggest gun in the arsenal. Babe Ruth.

Walton, Delhi ready for their Fall Classic
Walton senior James Armstrong has not truly experienced what Delhi-Walton is about. At least not at the varsity football level. But dating to back to his eighth-grade year the last time he played football before this season he remembered what playing Delhi means. "Delhi was always the big rivalry for us back then just because they're our neighbors," said Armstrong, who played soccer the last three years. "Delhi playing us this year on homecoming couldn't be a better time."

Laurens thrives in overtime
LAURENS A bit of advice to area soccer teams: DO NOT take the Laurens boys to overtime. The Leopards improved to 4-0 in extra time this season with a division-clinching 2-1 victory over Edmeston on Wednesday. Laurens is 9-0 in the Tri-Valley League with two league games remaining. Edmeston is 4-2-1, meaning the Panthers can't catch the Leopards in the Large School Division.
