OHS baseball top story from start to finish
The Daily Star's Top 10 Local Sports Stories Of 2002
It's not No. 1 because of its ending. It's No. 1 because of its drama. No, Oneonta High's baseball team did not win a state title, but it got to the state final, advancing further than any other Yellowjackets squad in the process. There was early turmoil with the five-week suspension levied on top pitcher Kyle Thomas after he was arrested for marijuana possession before the season even started.
Colgate routs Hartwick, 92-51
2002 Hartwick College Men's Basketball
Junior Howard Blue scored a season-high 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Colgate to a 92-51 victory over visiting Hartwick on Monday. Oneonta boys blow lead, fall in DWI final
2002-03 High School Boys Basketball
BINGHAMTON The winning shot best describes just how undisciplined Oneonta High played over the final 13 minutes of Sunday's STOP-DWI Holiday Classic Region Division I final at the Broome County Arena. With the Yellowjackets (5-3) holding a two-point lead against archrival Norwich in overtime, OHS coach Jerry Mackey told his team during a timeout not to give up any 3-pointers in the game's final 16.6 seconds.

Bean key to OHS victory over T-burg
2002-03 High School Boys Basketball
BINGHAMTON It would have been enough if Oneonta High's Geoff Bean had simply scored a game-high 21 points Friday at the Broome County Arena. It would have been enough if he had only grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds. It would have been enough if he had a game-high five assists. It even would have been enough had Bean concentrated all of his efforts on playing air-tight defense against the opposition's best player, who was four inches taller.
Redskins top Sidney; Eagles win big
2002-03 High School Boys Basketball
A balanced Cooperstown scoring sheet featured five players who scored between eight and 10 points, leading the unbeaten Redskins to a 57-43 boys basketball victory over Sidney on Friday in their tournament.
Playoffs leave everything to chance, not skill
Fantasy Island Fantasy Football Column
If the past week has taught me one thing about fantasy football, it's this: I hate the playoff system. Yes, I fell in the championship game of The Daily Star's league the Deadline Division. That meant losing a sizable pot in the only one of my fantasy leagues that pays the winner (sorry, darlin', looks like another low-rent New Year's).
The smart money
For reasons that are obvious, last week's failure with the bankroll has been dulled by a season's worth of miserable performances. I feel like a guy who has been watching his house burn since summer and has yet to find a hose. Most of the cows are out of the barn, which is next the house.
Williams case ugliest part of long, cold year
Talkin' Baseball Baseball Column
An eventful year, in baseball as elsewhere, is winding down. The motto of the "New Morality" is now definite: "Money Talks." This is hardly news, but it confirms the assessment made at the time the phrase was coined; the "New Morality" is neither new nor moral. Take the outcome of the intrafamilial dispute over the disposition of Ted Williams' remains.

OHS boys smother Point, 53-40
2002-03 High School Boys Basketball

There are alternatives to RB Holmes
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh!!! I hear ya, Priest Holmes owners. Those who trusted last year's breakout performance by the now record-challenging back or even those who stole him any time after the third round (no matter what size your league) are now in trouble up to their hips.
The Smart Money
I've had plenty of time to reflect on the dreary fact that my fake bankroll has plunged deep into debt. It might rank as my most humiliating sports moment, but you be the judge: In my first organized football game, as a freshman in high school, my uniform was No. 115. We didn't even have 100 guys on the team.
Hall ballot needs tweaking
Baseball column
The ballots for this winter's Hall of Fame elections have been sent out. The ballot for the Baseball Writers Association contains the names of 16 holdovers and 17 newcomers, including, by special dispensation, the late Darryl Kile. I have my reservations about Kile's inclusion on the ballot, but if nobody worse than Kile ever got nominated, I would have a higher opinion of the Screening Committee. That, alas, is not the case.

Bobcats are in perfect position
High School Girls Basketball Column
Monday night couldn't have ended more perfectly for the Bainbridge-Guilford girls basketball team. With the Bobcats sitting on a 41-37 lead, senior guard Paula Foote provided a spark for visiting Sidney on a 3-pointer from the top of the key. That spark failed to ignite the Warriors, who were definitely playing without the same fire that led to a Class C state runner-up finish last winter.

Happy Holidays to Warner
I have to admit, I've never liked Kurt Warner. It's probably an illogical dislike. It may be partly because he arrived embodying one of the qualities I find most out of place in sports: attributing all athletic success to God.
The Smart Money
Good grief! With three weeks to go in the season, I'm barely above the Mendoza line. For those of you who count on these forecasts to pick up a little extra holiday spending money, what were you thinking?
Young much more than an award's namesake
On a number of past occasions, pitchers who have received baseball's Cy Young award have responded by asking who Cy Young was. It's doubtful that any of those men will ever read this column, but if any of my readers have the same question, this column is for them.

Wrong moves can mean season over in stretch run
Fantasy Football Column
PLAYOFFS?!?!? Playoffs?!?! OK, so it doesn't translate very well to print, but former Colts coach Jim Mora's famous press-conference explosion starts popping up all over the place at this time of year. It's not quite playoff time in the NFL yet, with four weeks remaining in the regular season. Every week does carry playoff implications, however, particularly here in fantasyland.
The Smart Money
This is the time of year you have to be extremely cautious about nagging injuries, fatigue and indifference. I'm not just talking about me. NFL players are human, too. For instance, what about the Cowboys this week? Are their game faces packed in a trunk until they face the Redskins again, or will they come out peppy and seek to make Terrell Owens' bones show through his skin?
Bonds nowhere near Ruth's caliber
Baseball Column
Today is the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, but that has nothing to do with the topic of this column. I will merely mention, as I have done before, that of the 5,800 or so men who were playing professional baseball at the time, about 94 percent served in the armed forces. (Not all in the U. S. forces; the late Dick Fowler, a long-time Oneonta resident, was a native of Canada and served in that country's army.)

Buck up for last weeks of season
Outdoors Column
Three inches of new snow had fallen overnight. Normally, deer hunters would have welcomed the fresh snow, but not today. A half-inch of heavy, solid ice already hung on the trees. In the predawn darkness, I started up a hill to hunt on opening day. I faced the first dilemma almost immediately, unable to climb the hill despite using four-wheel drive. The ice under the snow forced me to walk, even though I was overdressed for the occasion.

New look, same result
SIDNEY Those entering Sidney's gymnasium Monday night expecting the frenetic, up-and-down, swarming style of basketball that helped the Warriors to a 26-1 record last season left surprised. Not disappointed, mind you.
