Winter storms are beginning to cause scheduling problems for many area high school sports teams as postponements are resulting in multiple games during a one-week period. Take the Indians, for example, who were snowed out for the fourth time this season when Friday's blizzard-like conditions wiped out the area's high school sports schedule.
Ruth is tops in this Hall system, too
Talkin' Baseball Column
Some time ago, a man named Travisano wrote a letter taking exception to my opposition to the rule that says a player has to have played in at least 10 seasons to be eligible for consideration for the Baseball Hall of Fame. He cited Bill James in support of his position in the matter. Specifically, what he cited James as saying was that length of career was a basic indicator of quality.
Hawks' men in weekend tournament
2003 College Men's Basketball
The Hartwick College men's basketball team will play against host University of Scranton in the Radisson Invitational Tournament at 3 p.m. Saturday. Case Western Reserve and York will play in the opener at 1 p.m. The Hawks (4-2) are coming off a 92-51 loss to Division I opponent Colgate University on Dec. 30. Scranton (7-2) won its fifth straight game, 75-66, over Buffalo State on Dec. 29.
The Smart Money
Based on my arithmetic, eight of this year's Super Bowl contenders are merely pretenders. For starters, no team with a record worse than 10-6 has ever won the crown, which eliminates the Jets (9-7), Browns (9-7) and Falcons (9-6-1). Also, no team that won the Super Bowl ever lost its season finale by 25 points or more. Goodbye Packers.

Fame Game day before O-Tigers' opener
2003 National Baseball Hall Of Fame
The Oneonta Tigers will have a tough act to follow in 2003. One day before the Tigers open their New York Penn-League season in Oneonta, Doubleday Field in Cooperstown will play host to the 57th annual Hall of Fame Game between the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Philadelphia Phillies. The National Baseball Hall of Fame announced the change and dates for the 2003 Induction Weekend on Thursday.
Good old days to continue on river in summer
Outdoors Column
Those of us who live in Leatherstocking country are familiar with canoe trips. Every year, hundreds of canoe-racing enthusiasts run the famous Clinton Regatta from Cooperstown to Bainbridge. Thousands more flock to the river and crowd the bridges to watch the annual Memorial Day weekend event. I've never had the urge to participate in the race. Some of you have heard of my canoeing escapades you know, the quiet trips, often upside-down, in the Adirondack wilderness.
OHS bowler as Goodas it gets
2002-03 High School Sports
Bruce Goodas threw 10 consecutive strikes Thursday en route to an all-time high 288 to lead the Oneonta High boys bowling team to a 7-0 defeat of visiting Owego at Holiday Lanes. Goodas had all strikes entering the 10th frame of his second game and got another on the first of his three balls. His 11th shot hit the pocket, but left one pin standing. "It was right there," OHS coach Art Rigas said. "It just hit a little flat."

Bainbridge man runs to record finish in Frostbite
Fifth Annual Frostbite 5k
It was out with the old and in with the new Tuesday for Bainbridge resident Aaron Robertson, who won Oneonta's fifth annual First Night Frostbite 5K with a record time. Robertson, 24, earned his first Frostbite 5K title in 16 minutes and 19 seconds, beating the old record of 16:30 set by two-time champion Mike Lehtonen of Morris in the initial running of the race.
