The Tri-Valley League keeps offering its best in baseball, and Edmeston keeps winning big. Erik Scrivener homered as the undefeated Panthers routed previously unbeaten Cherry Valley-Springfield, 9-2, Tuesday. Scrivener broke the game open with a three-run shot in the fifth inning that made the score 6-2. It was his fourth homer of the year, and Edmeston coach Ron Tasior said he measured it at 400 feet.

Exams at Trinity College start May 3 for sophomore Kevin Reed, but his grade for basketball is already in: Incomplete. A right-knee infection sidelined Downsville graduate Reed for the final 20 games this season, and he received a medical redshirt. But Reed won't don a Trinity uniform again, as a problem with his financial aid package will force him to transfer, he said.

Amanda Hoepker scored on a botched suicide squeeze in the eighth inning to give Schenevus a 3-2 victory over visiting Milford in a meeting of Tri-Valley League unbeatens Wednesday. Schenevus (5-0) had the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth with one out. Hoepker broke for home on Milford pitcher Alicia Strong's delivery. Allison Ferullo missed the bunt, but Milford catcher Rachel Baxter couldn't control the ball and Hoepker scored the winning run. The Wildcats dropped to 6-1.

Jefferson stayed undefeated with a 7-6 non-league victory at winless Schenevus on Wednesday in a rematch of the 2003 sectional championship, won by the Dragons, 12-0. Oneonta High's Mike Sclafani made Windsor pay Tuesday, and the price was a key Southern Tier Athletic Conference baseball game. Sclafani doubled and tripled following intentional walks to cleanup hitter Mike Konstanty, leading the host Yellowjackets to a 9-3 victory over the defending Section Four Class B champions. In the third inning, senior catcher Sclafani hit a two-out, two-run triple to right field to put Oneonta up, 2-1.

GILBERTSVILLE Sophomore Phylicia Dunham threw seven wild pitches, walked eight and hit three batters Monday for the Gilbertsville-Mount Upton softball team. Not exactly flawless stuff, but Dunham kept her cool to help first-year coach Tina Cole and the Raiders to their first victory of the season, a 14-8 non-league triumph over Downsville. Dunham seemed to be in a perpetual jam, but she struck out 11 and limited the undermanned Eagles to one earned run.

Men of honor: OHS sweeps Star awards

Mike Konstanty is the kind of player who lets his game to the talking. This season, it screamed "PLAYER OF THE YEAR." The Daily Star named Oneonta High senior Konstanty its top boys basketball player after he powered the Yellowjackets to their second straight Section Four Class B title. Actually, calling Konstanty a boy is misleading. He's a 6-foot-4, 225-pound mammoth, one of the most physically gifted specimens in the section.

The game was played in rainy conditions, but Milford coach Jim Dutcher said the field held up. "We played pretty good defense," Dutcher said. Accord Speedway had its independence day. Track promoter Gary Palmer said he decided in the offseason for Accord to go independent rather than remain DIRT. The change means more money for racers and a new tire rule that could draw more competitors.
