Fourteenth-seeded Afton in the Section Four Class D baseball final — who would have thunk it? Edmeston's Paul Stanton, for one. "You had to suspect Afton," said Stanton, whose top-seeded, top-ranked and undefeated team played two tight games with the Crimson Knights in the regular season. "Everybody should have known they'd be a good competitor. They play Class C teams all year."

Sidney graduate Lindsay Hinsch earned women's Athlete of the Year at Division I Lehigh University this spring. Hinsch finished second in the long jump (5.80 meters) at the Patriot League Championships. She also was fifth in the 100 dash and triple jump.

Roxbury's Cole wins Class D golf title
High School Golf: Section Four Class D Championships
Roxbury's Ryan Cole shot a 4-over-par 76 Thursday at the Delhi College Golf Course to earn medalist honors at the Section Four Class D Golf Championship. Edmeston's Alex Johnson and Hunter-Tannersville's Chris Backlund tied for second at 82. Hancock edged Roxbury, 464-467, for the title in the six-team tournament, which capped the Section Four golf season.

BINGHAMTON — Oneonta High baseball dropped the ball Thursday. A misplayed ball in the third inning and an error in the sixth led to three Windsor runs as the top-seeded Black Knights beat Oneonta, 5-3, in the Section Four Class B Championship at Conlon Field.

The Oneonta High baseball team is turning to one of its youngest players in the biggest game of the year. Sophomore Kyle Donnelly will pitch for the third-seeded Yellowjackets (13-8) in the Section Four Class B Championship against top-seeded Windsor at 6 p.m. today at Conlon Field in Binghamton.

The South Kortright boys ended an impressive three-sport run by defeating Hunter-Tannersville, 4-1, in the Delaware League baseball championship Wednesday at Stamford. The Rams finished the 2003-04 school year with a share of the DL title in soccer, a sectional finals berth in soccer, a sectional finals appearance in basketball and Wednesday's baseball crown.

Score two for procrastination. With his oft-used pitching wedge awaiting a regrip at home, 2000 Roxbury graduate Jon Rohacevich hit his first hole-in-one using a 9-iron on the par-3, 107-yard sixth hole Saturday at the Shephard Hills Golf Club. Then, he did it again.

Hartwick men's soccer coach McIntyre helped raise about $2 million during the last three months, and it paid off Monday when the school announced its men's soccer and women's water polo teams would remain Division I for the "foreseeable future."

Mara Primmer and St. Bonaventure were a match made in Corning. That's where the Bonnies discovered Oneonta High's Primmer last spring. She was playing a game for the Oneonta Soccer Club, and St. Bonaventure assistant coach Bob Hammer was watching.

Oneonta High's David Warren won the Section Four Class B Championship at Owego Free Academy on Saturday. Warren, seeded second, earned a straight-set victory over top-seeded Chris Nosky of Chenango Forks, 6-3, 6-2, to claim his first sectional title. This was the third straight season Warren has been in the sectional final.


O-State quartet wins two relays

Justin Palermo, Art Driscoll, Tim Wood and Tom O'Neill won two relays Saturday for the Oneonta State men's track and field team at the MIT Last Chance Qualifier. The foursome placed first in the 400- and 1,600-meter relays, in 42.97 seconds and 3:20.55, respectively.

Throw the seeds out, the defending Section Four Class D baseball champions are waking up. The 15th-seeded Schenevus Dragons, who advanced to the state championship last season, held on for a 5-4 road victory over No. 2 Jefferson in a Section Four Class D Tournament opener Friday. Schenevus beat Jefferson last season, 12-0, in the Section Four championship.

Velan wins four events for Stamford
High School Track And Field — Section Four Class Meets
Stamford's Mary Velan won four events, but Odessa-Montour won the Section Four Class D girls track and field title with 164 points Thursday at Delhi Tech. Davenport/South Kortright was second with 80 points and Cherry Valley-Springfield third with 68. Velan won the 1,500 (5 minutes, 1.2 seconds), 800 (2:24.3), 3,000 (11:40.1) and anchored the winning 1,600 relay team (4:33.6).

ONEONTA — Oneonta High girls soccer coach Helen Sandford kicked a 30-year habit Wednesday. Sandford, who started Oneonta's girls soccer program 30 years ago, retired from coaching soccer and teaching physical education after 37 years at OHS.

Senior attackman Chris Copeland was a little too much for the Hartwick College men's lacrosse team. Copeland scored eight times Saturday in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Upstate New York Championship, leading Rochester Institute of Technology to a 16-9 victory over the Hawks. Senior attackman Josh Molinari contributed three goals and seven assists for top-seeded RIT (14-4), which held an 11-5 lead at the half.

SIDNEY — Delhi's boys beat everything Thursday at the Midstate Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships. Down seven points with the 1,600-meter relay to go, the Bulldogs turned in a winning time of 3 minutes and 38.6 seconds. The victory by Jon Smith, Travis Mahler, Wade Bartlett and Jason Staples earned Delhi 10 points and its first MAC championship in the league's third season of existence.

Stephanie Shulgay struck out 11 in a one-hitter to lead Schenevus to a 3-1 victory over host Milford in the Tri-Valley League on Wednesday. The victory clinched the Tri-Valley East Division for the Dragons, who finished 11-1 in the league. "It's exciting," Schenevus coach Jennifer Barnett said. "I knew the girls potentially could do it. It basically all goes down to how hard they want to work. And they busted their butts."

Jack Cooperman's two-run double was followed by Pete Tiller's two-run single in a five-run sixth inning for SK (10-4, 7-1).

B-G falls apart in 7th

A seventh-inning nightmare led to Bainbridge-Guilford's first league baseball loss of the season as the Bobcats allowed all eight of Deposit's runs in the seventh inning of an 8-4 home loss Thursday. "It was ugly," B-G coach Steve Rice said of the top of the seventh, where his team committed all four of its errors and the Lumberjacks had four of their nine hits. The Bobcats (9-2-1 overall, 6-1 Midstate Athletic Conference) held a 2-0 lead entering the seventh, with Deposit's 6-7-8 hitters due up.

Delhi boys, Unatego girls win Harbaugh
Matt Oliver won the shot put (44 feet, 6 inches) and discus (119-3) to help lead the Delhi boys to the Harbaugh Invitational championship at Davenport on Wednesday. Oliver and teammate Travis Mahler were named co-MVPs of the meet. Mahler won the 110 hurdles (17.4 seconds) and the 400 hurdles (60.4) and was on the winning 1,600 relay team. Delhi scored 146 points for the victory. Harpursville was second of 12 teams with 76, Walton third with 64 and Stamford fourth with 52.

Delhi Tech turned to an old friend for its next men's basketball coach. Mike Spisto, the Broncos' head coach from 1999-2001, returned to his old post Wednesday, Delhi Tech athletic director Gary Cole said via cell phone.

Unatego won eight relays en route to the girls championship at the six-team Cherry Valley-Springfield relays on Monday. The Spartans set three meet records. Vickie Ryan and Calli Jo Sheldon won the 200 hurdles relay in 38.41 seconds. Sherilena Strub, Josie McDermott, Ryan and Katya Harris won the 800 relay in 1 minute, 59.21 seconds. McDermott and Strub won the high jump relay at 9 feet, 6 inches.

COOPERSTOWN — As a designated hitter, Paul Molitor still fits nicely into a baseball lineup. One of the game's best hitters who earned the 1993 World Series MVP, Molitor visited the National Baseball Hall of Fame for his orientation tour Friday morning. Molitor and former pitching standout Dennis Eckersley, scheduled to appear at the Hall on May 10, will be enshrined July 25 during the 2004 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at the Clark Sports Center.
