I had been training a young black lab named Skeeter, who was doing quite well on the abundant grouse and woodcock that I found along the northwoods river flats, but a change of tactics would do her good.

Cooperstown avenged an early-season loss to Mount Markham and pulled into a virtual tie with the Mustangs in the Center State Conference Division II standings after a 4-1 boys soccer victory Tuesday.

Meg Shirey cleared a ball that got behind Cherry Valley-Springfield goalie Lindsey Cairo in the second half, preserving the host Patriots’ 0-0 Tri-Valley League tie against Worcester on Tuesday.


Hartwick men fall, 1-0, in double-OT
Hansen Woodruff scored in the 106th minute Tuesday to give Syracuse a 1-0 non-conference men’s soccer victory in overtime against visiting Hartwick College. Woodruff’s sixth goal of the season came in the second overtime period for the Orange (6-6-1), who held an 11-8 advantage in shots during regulation.
